TOPIC JUDGMENT ON THE TREE OF LIFE

The metaphysical foundation of phallic Yesod, represented as the second (from the bottom) sphere of the Tree of Life, is similar to the idea of the Omphalos becoming opaque (Qlippot), obstructing our view of the upper source Worlds of the Olam, after the "shattering of Vessels" (Shevirah).

After the "rectification," (Tikkun) the Yesod sphere becomes clear (sapphire stone). This represents the change in our "evil eye" perception of reality, that will eventually come into being, eliminating the negative influence (Sitra Ahra) from the "Other Side."

The Hebrew feminine noun gevurah or geburah (גבורה in the Kabbalah of Judaism is the fifth of the Sephirot of the tree of life, and it is the second of the emotive attributes of the Sephirot. It sits below Binah, across from Chesed, and above Hod. It commonly has four paths leading to Binah, Chesed, Tiphereth, and Hod (although some Kabbalists draw a path from Gevurah to Hokhmah).

Gevurah is known as "restraint,"^[1] "strength, "judgment", "power", and "concealment". It's usually "strength" or "power" and "judgment"^[2] when using the name din (which means "judgment" in Hebrew).

In the Bahir it is written "And who are the Officers? We learned that there are three. Strength (Gevurah) Is the Officer of all the Holy Forms to the left of the Blessed Holy One. He is Gabriel."

-31-02 - DREAM - I was living and working in a place that was a combination of businesses owned by the Jewish Judge. He was in process of hiring 4 new guys to work in his garage, which was furnished 1/2 with exercise equipment, and the other half which was a car repair place, but was empty at the moment.

He wasn't there when the 4 unemployed men arrived, so I began the interview process myself. Then the Judge arrived with three other authoritative-looking men, all about 7 feet tall and he took over the interview and told them to report back at 7:00 a.m. the next day. There was a slight discussion to make sure that 7:00 a.m. was okay with everyone. I always got up at 5 a.m. so it was okay with me.

At the same time, we were getting an 18 wheeler big rig to go somewhere, however an injunction had been obtained so that we couldn't pull the truck over the property line. So 24 blonde people who all looked alike, with ropes/lariats over their arms had been hired to unload all the boxes off the truck, walk out into the street and reload all the boxes onto a truck that was already in the street. There was no law against that and nobody could stop us.

I walked out of the garage to go get dressed, and all I had to hide and protect myself on top was a large piece of green cloth and I was dressed normally from the waist down. As I left the garage which had 3 cars parked in it, other people were moving the cars in a certain order, otherwise they would get bumped and scratched. The order it was done was most important.

Outside, I saw new blue and white paint being sprayed on the building by my son Thomas who was suspended near the top of the building by a rope. His two sons were helping out. The apron of the garage was spray painted sky blue, and the side of the building was white.

Across the street on a building had been spray painted - the whole permit for this move was spray painted in Hebrew, very formally, including the number of the permit (a long number). Next to the permit was a clock with the time that said 11:11.

I then went to a different part of the garage where all the stuff was being repacked. All of the dinner dishes were in a box, but it seemed to me the box was too thin to support heavier boxes on top of it. There was a lot of dark-wood antique furniture standing around, which had been dismantled. I wouldn't take anything that didn't have all the pieces ready to re-assemble.

One table was made like a debarked tree stump. Part of the table top was in pieces. On two of the three pieces were there. It wasn't broken in straight lines - the table top had been made from 3 grandly scrolled pieces of wood held together like a great puzzle. My son Ken was there and I suggested he take the 1/3rd of the table top that was 1/2 moon shaped. It had U.S.A stickers on it, with red, white, and blue flags. That was going with us.

2-1-02 - VISION - I saw a note: A study of the 200 - 400- 600 and the manifestation of __________ (couldn't remember what was going to be manifested)

2-2-02 - DREAM - Joe and I were driving north through California and we stopped the car to get out and stretch our legs. We went around a corner on the path to the right and came across a deep canyon cut out of red rock. We were right on the brink of the canyon and I looked to the right and there was a brand new - never driven on - concrete bridge span across the canyon. It had no railings and no wires, or pillars, it was a single concrete span - brilliant white, gleaming in the sun. I was astounded to see this.

I told Joe, I didn't know this was here. He said, "You can see it if you go up highway 3__ (16?) It was so breathtaking, I could hardly believe it was there. I blinked my eyes and it was gone like it as in a different dimension. . Still I could remember it so clearly and we went home and I was telling people about the white bridge over the canyon

At the same time, one of the visitors named Geri whose husband is named Daniel was telling her husband that they only had 70 days to get ready to go somewhere. Everything she picked up and ate, caused a huge green stain around her mouth and on her tongue - it was various shades of green. I could hardly look at her. I picked up something green too, which looked like an overripe cucumber and just threw it into the garbage.

I just wanted to remember the bridge.

2-2-02 - DREAM - I went out on the front porch and I saw a huge black cloud coming up in the east. I said to Joe - "That's where the Water Treatment Plant is." I could see the black cloud going up with tremendous speed and the cloud was billowing up to the north - there the smoke met with a regular white cloud in the sky where the smoke merged with the cloud and it became a cloud of black and white geometric shapes. It was quite remarkable to see.

Then a work crew showed up in front of the house and they started working on tree that was barely more than a few years old. They were bending the branches all the way to the ground, tying ropes to them, banding them and letting them spring back up again.

There were many smaller broken branches lying on the ground as well, which they had trimmed off. A whole crowd of people and kids was gathering to watch the smoke and the work on the tree.

I saw that our daughter was among them. I knew she was enjoying herself, but she was way too young to run around unattended. So I grabbed her and picked her up and carried her back to the house, promising we would sit on the porch and watch. I went into the house with her to look for a chair I could take out on the porch to sit on.

There were so many people in the house, I could hardly find anything to sit on. There were little plants growing everywhere, including on benches I might have been able to sit on. I finally found an odd shaped tricycle made out of wood for the daughter to sit on, so I picked it up to carry it out to the porch.

As I was walking through the house, one of the young men said, "Hey! There is a real estate lady on the phone..." I answered, "Tell her I need a house twice as big."

I heard Joe laughing . "That's what my mother always used to say."

I then went out on the porch which was an indoor/outdoor type of room. This room all by itself was larger than the whole house was. It was like I was seeing it for myself for the first time and I was astounded. The north wall had a tremendous set of dishes which were all cobalt blue. I don't know how many place settings there were. It stretched all the way across the room in 5 tiers like an upside-down pyramid for at least 100 feet.

I carried the child who was now more of an infant and went and sat on the couch near to where Joe and another man were sitting and talking by a window facing south. I sat next to a young man on the sofa and the baby seemed like she was tired so I took a small tan blanket to wrap around her and sat down. I sat there, watching Joe and the other man talk and saw all the old wooden antiques sitting on the window sill.

The baby started to point out which direction the wall with the cobalt blue dishes was. She said, "That is Oklahoma, and that way - (toward the smoke) is Morgan." I knew that wasn't right, and I said, "That is Oklahoma (north) and that is 76th St. (east)

7-25-09 - DREAM - I was in a very large two story house, taking care of a little boy who was Spanish/Mexican. This house and the little boy was very dirty. There were little crumbs of dirt everywhere including on the child, on the bed, on the floors - everywhere.

There was also a very young woman with me - no relation to the child, but she was helping me.

I started out by trying to mop the bathroom floor, behind the toilet first - and there was so much crud on the floor, this was very difficult.

Because the little boy was so dirty, he needed cleaning too, and I asked the young woman to help me with him because I felt sorry for the little boy. The young woman did everything I asked of her without complaint.

I then found three golden swords/knives rather machete-shaped with wide blades and extremely sharp - each had a different shape but were about three feet long and these were dirty as well.

I took the machetes downstairs to clean and polish them, but for some reason I just couldn't clean them downstairs, so I took them back upstairs and asked the young woman if she would clean them for me.

I lay on the bed then which was very large and so was the room and as I lay on the bed, looking at the ceiling, I saw green and blue stripes of paint on the ceiling at random - not like the ceiling was going to be painted - they were like test stripes. This made me question whether I was in the right bedroom or someone else's.

So, I got out of bed to make sure I was even in the right house, and in the corner of the room, I spotted a man, dressed all in brown, but I couldn't see his face.

Then the man picked up something from the floor that was hidden by dirt - and he turned it to face me. It was a painting of a pine tree trunk. As he showed me this painting, it became more and more brilliantly colored - just the trunk of the tree - with new branches coming out of it. The painting became more and more brilliant and larger and larger and closer and closer to me - but all I could see was the trunk of the tree - never the whole tree.

The Maya of southern Mexico and Guatemala associated Orion's sword with their creator god. Orion's belt stars represented the back of a celestial turtle. First Father, their creator god, emerged from a crack in the back of this celestial turtle to put people in the world. Perhaps barely seeing the Orion Nebula as a bit of a smudgy appearance to the center star in Orion's sword and interpreting this smudge as smoke, they saw the center star in Orion's sword as the flame of creation. The Mayan hearth was a triangle of three stones. Alnitak, the easternmost belt star, along with the two feet stars, Saiph and Rigel, formed the celestial hearth cradling their fire of creation.

Iraq and the weapons of mass destruction in retrospect

The Baathist regime of Iraq may not have possessed Weapons of Mass Destruction according to some technical criteria, but it certainly possessed what could be called ‘weapons of mass destruction’, meaning weapons capable of destroying masses of human beings.

In the Rwandan Genocide, between 800,000 and a million people were killed mostly using simple weapons, above all the machete. This is several times more than were killed by the atomic bombs that hit Japan in 1945. Judging by the twentieth-century historical record, the machete is a more dangerous weapon of mass destruction than the nuclear bomb. Saddam Hussein had repeatedly carried out genocide and mass murder against the Iraqi population. With the weaponry still available to him in 2003, he was entirely able to do so again. That he did not possess what are technically classified as ‘Weapons of Mass Destruction’ may make a difference to how one evaluates the justification for the war, if what concerns one is British or American national security or even Middle Eastern regional security. But for those of us who thought about the intervention in Iraq primarily in humanitarian terms, what mattered most was his ability to harm his own people. The failure to discover ‘Weapons of Mass Destruction’ in Iraq following the invasion made no difference in this regard.

Just moments ago a young man was cutting my tree down and cutting it into
small pieces and stacking it at the curb...he told me he was with the
National Guard and his commanding officer told him to start cleanup asap. He
was very nice...but then n ambulance and a fire truck arrived for the house
across the street as what appeared to be fireworks shot off which was a
power line down and all the power was off up and down the street. This
National Guard man tells me he saw the tornado hit this area...
The main road Morton Street was blocked off...and people in the short block
were all outside and some looking at their roofs for damage. It looked like
a war torn area...
I had just gotten home from work at the One Grand Center building in
Sherman, TX where the building was swaying and you could see the black
swirling mass north east of the building and the winds were so high the
windows were popping. We all huddled in the bottom stairwell until the wind
became less forceful. No one was in their offices...and the sirens were
going off...quite an eventful day!

Another friend who lives in Texas is suffering from drought. She writes after I asked her if she had taken a photo of her dead tree:

No, I haven't. It is back in my woods. A small one next to it died yesterday and there are five smaller cedars near by that also gave up the ghost. Lost a pin oak also yesterday. We had 108 and still no rain. So sad. Watering myself to death. The biggest tree on my property is turning yellow and we have a water sprinkler on it trying to encourage it to live one more day. Combined with the drought and the heat, they are just finally all giving up.

I wish I could say prayer works but it certainly hasn't helped bring any rain here. Losing faith quickly.

I wondered why they were in my yard, so I walked along the hill and discovered that there was a large brick house up there with many windows in it. I discovered that there was a walkway up there and I walked along it and found a parapet at th edge of the hill overlookinig my yard. It was too far to jump down so I had to walk back the way I came and walk along the hill to get back to my own yard.

I went over to the garage with a red hammer in my hand , went into the garage and laid the hammer on a small table.

Then a mechanical airplane came into the garage. It was green and it ws following me around. I looked to see if I was wearng anything green that was attracting the plane to me and I ddin't see anything on me that was green..

Crop Circle Formation

Introduction

Two very significant crop circle formations appeared at Barbury Castle in May 1997. They seemed to reveal extremely important information. One of the formations was the Kabalistic Tree of Life.

The crop formation is pictured on the left, above. The depiction on the right is one version of the ancient Tree of Life. The Tree of Life, of course, is mentioned many times in the Bible, from the beginning of the Book of Genesis to last part of the Book of Revelation. One who eats from this Tree, according to the Bible, is given "eternal life." The above diagram of the Tree of Life is part of an ancient tradition called "Kabala." Other spellings of the word include, kabbala, cabala, cabbala, quabala, and qabbalah. This is generally known as a special Hebrew tradition, the occult philosophy of certain Jewish rabbis, especially in the Middle Ages, based on a mystical interpretation of the Scriptures. Many scholars believe that the tradition is much older; that it traces back to the ancient Egyptians and Sumerians.

Connections to Ancient Sumeria

Over one hundred years ago, clay tablets were found in present day Iraq. They were artifacts with Cuneiform writings and pictographic carvings, left by the ancient people of that region. The Assyrian and Babylonian empires were located in that area long ago, but an even more ancient one preceded them, called Sumer, which in the Bible is called "Land of Shine'ar." According to scholar, Zecharia Sitchin, in Divine Encounters (page 7) -

Sumer (the biblical Shine'ar) was the land where the first known and fully documented civilization sprang up after the Deluge, appearing suddenly and all at once some six thousand years ago.

Some of the pictographic carvings have depictions similar to the Kabalistic Tree of Life. The oldest story in history, '
The Epic of Gilgamesh, was also found. Gilgamesh was a king, who was part god. He traveled to a far place, looking for the plant or tree that gave eternal life.

The Meaning of the Tree of Life

1-23-98 - VISION - As I was falling asleep, I was watching two little girls playing with a ball of light. They ended up standing on the ball of light which was flaming around their feet, but it was not hot. It was cool white light.

In the dream that followed, I was shown this symbol which is very similar to the Tree Of Life.

It was made all of golden light flowing like golden threads between golden balls of light. I watched it for a long time. It was so beautiful, it still makes me cry to think about how beautiful it was.

Hod is the astral form, while Yesod is the resultant condition of the entire Tree of Life, and bears the titles: the treasure, house of images, and the machinery of the universe.

DREAM - 10-4-05 - I was in a room with two children -a boy and a girl - probably around 7 or 8 years old. I had a notebook and we were going to list the tasks they planned to accomplish. They told me what they planned and I wrote them down in order - #1, #2, etc.

I wrote down #3 and the girl said, "I don't want to be #3, I want to be #5"

I said, "They have to go in order and not skip numbers."

Then my husband (or a companion) who was sitting behind my right shoulder, said #10 is HOD, 11 is GEH, and when he said the words, a symbol appeared on the page in the appropriate line.

I asked, "What language is that? I don't know what those words mean."

He said, "Qabalistic Magic!"

I argued, "You are not going to be teaching these kids magical words. You know that if you speak certain words, you draw certain beings to you that know you understand what they are saying. I've had experiences where beings have come to me and spoken to me for hours because they know I know what they are saying. I'm not going to have these kids experience that with strange beings because they know Qabalistic magic words."

10-31-05 - VISION - I was given a thick manila envelope with a lot of words on it and I could read except the word HOD.

I think that's the third time I've dreamed that word.

Right before that I was dreaming about cleaning a huge room with a broom. It was so dirty, I put down some water to hold down the dust.

In one place the dust turned to purple/blue ink and it was running the wrong way because the floor was slanted in the wrong direction and the cats were in the way, playing right where I wanted to sweep.

I then put down newspapers on the floor and pick up the dampness from the water I had spread to catch the dust.

Some mothers and their daughters came in then and I ran to pick up the newspapers and a mother said, "Don't pick up the newspapers, they are perfect for us to sit on and they all sat on the newspapers and brought in wedding gifts for the bride and groom.

I went out into the back hall feeling very guilty for doing such a bad job of cleaning.

Someone said to me, "You shouldn't judge yourself so harshly. The best man to judge the job you are doing is the man who had the job before you."

I looked up and a young, tall man in a beige colored robe stood there before me.

The Sepher Yetzirah tells us that the universe was Created when Divinity arranged the 22 Hebrew letters in a particular order. Indeed, we are told in a Jewish folk-tale of the letters themselves, each begging Yahweh to be the one that the Creation would happen through (the winner was, of course, Beth [B]....hence the first word of Genesis "Berashith"). We can see what all of this means when we look at the Hebrew Alphabet through a mystic's eyes. Each of the 22 letters is assigned to an elemental or astrological component of the universe. The energies of the 12 signs of the zodiac, the 7 planets, and the 3 elements (remember that Earth is not a literal element) all compose the very fabric of existance. Further, each letter is also attributed to a Tarot Trump, and all of the deep mystical ideals contained therein. Genesis I contains ten instances of "Elohim Said..."; these are the ten Sephiroth of the Tree of Life. However, these ten vessels of Divine Power would be useless without the 22 paths, each with a Letter attributed to it, that connect them and allow the Energy to flow. The paths, by the way, is exactly what the Sepher Yetzirah is refering to when it speaks of the arrangement of the Letters. So, what does this mean for you and I? It means that those 22 Letters govern every aspect of our lives. If we could somehow divine how the Letters are arranged for us at any given time, then we could learn much about our lives and how to live them. We could ensure ourselves that we are traveling with the flow of Divine Energy, and not fighting the current. This, as you probably have heard, is the one cause of all pain in life. Pain vanishess once you learn to "go with the flow", and the true Adept has learned how to navigate along that flow. You have certainly heard of one system that uses this idea: Astrology. All but three of the Hebrew letters are assigned to Zodiacal or Planetary forces. A great knowledge of Astrology is not necessary to use the system presented here, but you will need to know the basic correspondences between the letter and the Astrological Force it represents. However, it should be known that the more you understand Astrology, the better you will be able to use what I am going to be teaching you in this booklet. Likewise the Tarot is another way of divining the arrangement of the Letters. The Golden Dawn Tarot Deck features the Hebrew Letters printed on each card for easy reference. You will need to know the basic correspondences of the Tarot to the Hebrew Letters to use this system. These attributions will be listed in the Appendix of this booklet. This system will allow you to receive direct Divine messages pertaining to the afore mentioned Flow. It will show you how the 22 letters are arranged in accordance with any object, idea, or situation, and then allow you to begin navigating that Flow.

Have you ever wondered why so many Angelic Names end in "el" (Michael, Raphael, Gabriel, Uriel, etc)? It is because of what the word "El" means. First, it is a Hebrew word for "Divinity" (or God). Therefore, Gabriel is the "Strength of Divinity" (Gebur + El = Gabriel). This name does not imply that Gabriel is separate from Divinity Itself. Instead, He actually embodies the Strength of Divinity. Further, there is also another reason. It involves exactly what the letters E and L mean. E (or A, it is the Hebrew Aleph) relates Power, as well as Benevolence. L (the Hebrew Lamed) means an extension, as well as a Guide. Therefore, El is appended to Angelic Names because Angels themselves are an extension of Divine Power.

The word Qabbalah finds its root in the Hebrew word Qibel meaning 'to receive by oral tradition'.

Qabbalah refers to an oral tradition of esoteric or secret knowledge concerning 'essentially' the mysteries of Nature, and more overtly, the hidden teachings concerning the Hebrew Torah. The Torah is, of course, the first five books of what Christians call the Old Testament, and the oldest surviving of the Judaic liturgical texts.

The Kabala is an ancient Hebrew mystical system of thought. It is a symbolic representation of the path the Divine followed in the creation of the universe, including man. It is, by definition, humanity's process of returning to divinity along the same path.

Kabbala, also spelled KABALA, KABBALAH, CABALA, CABBALA, OR CABBALAH, is an esoteric Jewish mysticism as it appeared in the 12th and following centuries. Kabbala has always been essentially an oral tradition in that initiation into its doctrines and practices is conducted by a personal guide to avoid the dangers inherent in mystical experiences.

Esoteric Kabbala is also "tradition" inasmuch as it lays claim to secret knowledge of the unwritten Torah (divine revelation) that was communicated by God to Moses and Adam. Though observance of the Law of Moses remained the basic tenet of Judaism, Kabbala provided a means of approaching God directly.

It thus gave Judaism a religious dimension whose mystical approaches to God were viewed by some as dangerously pantheistic and heretical.

The earliest roots of Kabbala are traced to Merkava mysticism. It began to flourish in Palestine in the 1st century AD and had as its main concern ecstatic and mystical contemplation of the divine throne, or "chariot" (merkava), seen in a vision by Ezekiel, the prophet (Ezekiel 1).

The earliest known Jewish text on magic and cosmology, Sefer Yetzira ("Book of Creation"), appeared sometime between the 3rd and the 6th century. It explained creation as a process involving the 10 divine numbers (sefirot; see sefira) of God the Creator and the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet.

Taken together, they were said to constitute the "32 paths of secret wisdom."

A major text of early Kabbala was the 12th-century Sefer ha-bahir ("Book of Brightness"), whose influence on the development of Jewish esoteric mysticism and on Judaism in general was profound and lasting.

The Bahir not only interpreted the sefirot as instrumental in creating and sustaining the universe but also introduced into Judaism such notions as the transmigration of souls (gilgul) and strengthened the foundations of Kabbala by providing it with an extensive mystical symbolism.

Hod is the sphere of the solar level of consciousness. It is the realm of ideas and communication, of magic, contracts, and travel. The idea of reality creating has its basis in this sphere and of the skill to manifest and unmanifest things at will.

Modern science stems from the energy in this level, as it is the solar level of consciousness that tries to quantify the universe and everything around it.

Hod is a good place to meet with the Archangel Michael. Michael is a being to call upon when you need protection or are in some kind of danger. As such Hod is a place to go for protection from the things that are unseen and things that are beyond your own ability to defend against.

The energy of this sphere is well suited for acquiring knowledge and wisdom of any scientific or of a concrete physical-like nature. But more so, this sphere is the place to go to find or touch God within these physical constructs. The Beney Eloheem's primary responsibility is the transmission of knowledge to unite man with God. So here, for example, you not only acquire knowledge but also about how that knowledge touches the universe.

Because the energy of Hod is skewed toward the application of knowledge through divine means, Hod is a great place to uncover deception and to find the truth of things. The light of God here is powerful enough to illuminate all falsehoods. Visit here when you feel someone is being untruthful and you want to discover the true nature of these things. Then use this knowledge to help you but not as a weapon to be used against another.

The pitfall here in Hod is the use of truth and of knowledge as a weapon against others or in some kind of game to gain superiority over another. You do not always have to be correct. And the real truth is that the more knowledge you acquire the more humble you must become. So if you find yourself falling into the trap of using knowledge against others, visit the sphere of Yesod where knowledge is secondary to the powerful unknown forces that shape existence through mysterious ways.

If used correctly Hod can be a great place to acquire the energy of discovery. Knowledge will seek out knowledge and open more and more doorways for you, if you just give it the time. This action will also keep you safe and protected from the often double-edge nature of knowledge that is acquired by force or too quickly.

Who are the Beney Elohim?

The Old Testament references to "sons of God." This phrase is translated from the Hebrew beney 'elohim [ בני אלהים ], beney ha'elohim [ בני האלהים ], and beney 'elim [ בני אלים ]:

GENESIS 6:1 When men began to increase on earth and daughters were born to them, 2 the divine beings [beney ha'elohim] saw how beautiful the daughters of men were and took wives from among those that pleased them. 3 The Lord said, "My breath shall not abide in man forever, since he too is flesh; let the days allowed him be one hundred and twenty years." 4 It was then, and later too, that the Nephilim appeared on earth when the divine beings [beney ha'elohim] cohabited with the daughters of men, who bore them offspring. They were the heroes of old, the men of renown. (Tanakh, the new Jewish Publication Society translation according to the traditional Hebrew text)

DEUTERONOMY 32:8 When the Most High gave to the nations their inheritance, when he separated the sons of men, he fixed the bounds of the peoples according to the number of the sons of God [beney 'elohim]. (RSV)

PSALM 29:1 O give the Lord you sons of God [beney 'elim], give the Lord glory and power; 2 give the Lord the glory of his name. Adore the Lord in his holy court. (The Psalms: A New Translation)

PSALM 89:5 The heavens proclaim your wonders, O Lord; the assembly of your holy ones proclaims your truth. 6 For who in the skies can compare with the Lord or who is like the Lord among the sons of God [beney 'elim]? (The Psalms: A New Translation)

As you can see, each reference above is to angels. There are no instances in the Old Testament where the phrase "sons of God" refers to men. Let's see what E.W. Bullinger has to say about these "sons of God" in Appendix 23 to The Companion Bible:

"The Sons of God" in Gen. 6.2, 4.
It is only by the Divine specific act of creation that any created being can be called "a son of God." For that which is "born of the flesh is flesh." God is spirit and that which is "born of the Spirit is spirit" (John 3.6). Hence Adam is called a "son of God" in Luke 3.38. Those "in Christ" having the "new nature" which is by the direct creation of God (2 Cor. 5.17; Eph. 2.10) can be, and are called "sons of God" (John 1.13; Rom. 8.14, 15; 1 John 3.1).

This is why angels are called "sons of God" in every other place where the expression is used in the Old Testament. Job 1.6; 2.1; 38.7; Ps. 29.1; 89.6; Dan. 3.25 (no art.). We have no authority or right to take the expression in Gen. 6.4 in any other sense. Moreover in Gen. 6.2 the Sept. renders it "angels". (pp. 26, 27, Companion Bible Appendixes)

Now let's look at Genesis 6:9, which discusses Noah's genealogy. This Scripture is further proof that fallen angels had interbred with humans.

GENESIS 6:9 This is the genealogy of Noah. Noah was a just man, perfect [tamim] in his generations. Noah walked with God. (NKJV)

In Genesis 6:9, the Hebrew word tamim, here translated "perfect," means "physically without blemish." As the first sentence makes clear, it's referring to the genealogy of Noah; it does not refer to moral perfection. Below is what Appendix 26 of The Companion Bible has to say about this word as used in verse 9 of Genesis 6:

The Heb. word tamim means without blemish, and is the technical word for bodily and physical perfection, and, not moral. Hence it is used of animals of sacrificial purity . It is rendered without blemish in Ex. 12.5; 29.1; Lev. 1.3, 10; 3.1, 6; 4.3, 23, 28, 32; 5.12, 18; 6.6; 9.2, 3; 14.10; 22.19; 23.12, 18; Num. 6.14; 28.19, 31; 29.2, 8, 13, 20, 23, 29, 32, 36; Ezek. 43.22, 23, 25; 45.18, 23; 46.4, 6, 13.
Without spot: Num. 19.2; 28.3, 9, 11; 29.17, 26.

Undefiled: Ps. 119.1.

This shows that Gen. 6.9 does not speak of Noah's moral perfection . . . (p. 28, Companion Bible Appendixes)

Now let's examine what Jude said about the fallen angels in the New Testament:

JUDE 6 And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. 7 Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. (KJV)

Because of the punctuation of verse 7, this Scripture appears to say that Sodom and Gomorrah, as well as the cities around them, gave themselves over to sexual immorality. However, the underlying Greek text does not support this interpretation. Kenneth Wuest writes of verse 7:

This verse begins with hos, an adverb of comparison having meanings of "in the same manner as, after the fashion of, as, just as." Here it introduces a comparison showing a likeness between the angels of verse 6 and the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha of this verse. But the likeness between them lies deeper than the fact that both were guilty of committing sin. It extends to the fact that both were guilty of the same identical sin. The punctuation of the A.V. [KJV] is misleading, as an examination of Greek text discloses.
The A.V. punctuation gives the reader the impression that Sodom and Gomorrha committed fornication and that the cities about them committed fornication in like manner to the two cities named. . . . The words "in like manner" are related to the verbal forms, "giving themselves over to fornication" and "going after strange flesh." In addition to all this, the Greek text has toutois, "to these." Thus, the translation should read, "just as Sodom and Gomorrha and the cities about them, in like manner to these, having given themselves over to fornication and having gone after strange flesh." The sense of the entire passage (vv.6, 7) is that the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha and the cities about them, in like manner to these (the angels), have given themselves over to fornication and have gone after strange flesh. That means that the sin of the fallen angels was fornication. (pp. 241-242, vol. II, Word Studies in the Greek New Testament)

The underlying Greek text indicates that the fallen angels left their own domain and indulged in sexual immorality, going after "strange," or "other" flesh. The KJV obscures this fact, probably because the view that the fallen angels were "the sons of God" spoken of in Genesis 6:2, 4 was not accepted when it was translated in 1611. However, some translations do more clearly show the meaning of this passage. The New English Bible better presents what Jude was saying:

JUDE 6 Remember too the angels, how some of them were not content to keep the dominion given to them but abandoned their proper home; and God has reserved them for judgement on the great Day, bound beneath the darkness in everlasting chains. 7 Remember Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbouring towns; like the angels, they committed fornication and followed unnatural lusts; and they paid the penalty in eternal fire, an example for all to see. (NEB)

It's clear that Jude wrote of the fornication of the angels as a fact. In verse 7 of his epistle, he compares the sexual wickedness in Sodom, Gomorrah, and the surrounding cities to the sin of the angels.

The nature of the angels' fall is also clearly stated in Jude 6, where it is said that they left their own "abode" (Gr. oiketerion). This word occurs in the New Testament only here and in II Corinthians 5:2, where it is used of the spiritual body of a resurrected saint.

II CORINTHIANS 5:1 For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed with our habitation [oiketerion] which is from heaven, (NKJV)

There is a great deal revealed in the Bible about angels. Angels could and did assume human form and even eat men's food (Gen. 18-19). Although the Bible doesn't tell us how, Jude 6 shows that some angels left their proper abode (their spiritual bodies) and took on fleshly bodies so as to marry and produce offspring by the daughters of men.

Although the angels committed sexual sins and corrupted the human lineage to some extent, they did something else that threatened to foil God's plan for humanity. Let's go back to 1 Enoch to see what these fallen angels did that affected the human race enormously:

1 ENOCH 8:1 And Azazel taught men to make swords, and knives, and shields, and breastplates, and made known to them the metals of the earth and the art of working them, and bracelets, and ornaments, and the use of antimony, and the beautifying of the eyelids, and all kinds of costly stones, and all 2 colouring tinctures. And there arose much godlessness, and they committed fornication, and they 3 were led astray, and became corrupt in all their ways. Semjaza taught enchantments, and root- cuttings, Armaros the resolving of enchantments, Baraqijal (taught) astrology, Kokabel the constellations, Ezeqeel the knowledge of the clouds, Araqiel the signs of the earth, Shamsiel the signs of the sun, and Sariel the course of the moon. And as men perished, they cried, and their cry went up to heaven . . . (From The Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha of the Old Testament, translated by R.H. Charles)

As the text above shows, the angels brought with them knowledge which humanity did not have beforehand. This information led to a rapid advance in the knowledge base of the antediluvian society, including the invention of advanced methods of waging warfare. In the NKJV translation of Genesis 6:4, the nephilim are called "mighty men who were of old, men of renown;" however, the NRSV translates that same phrase as "heroes that were of old, warriors of renown."

Genesis 6:11 shows that the earth was filled with violence; this is very likely the direct result of the nephilim, who apparently were mighty warriors. If the ancient legends are indeed based in fact, as they appear to be, these angelic offspring were superhuman in size and great in strength. There is also an indication from the ancient text known as the Book of Jasher that this corruption of bloodlines extended to the animals also.

JASHER 4:18 And their judges and rulers went to the daughters of men and took their wives by force from their husbands according to their choice, and the sons of men in those days took from the cattle of the earth, the beasts of the field and the fowls of the air, and taught the mixture of animals of one species with the other, in order therewith to provoke the Lord; and God saw the whole earth and it was corrupt, for all flesh had corrupted its ways upon earth, all men and all animals. 19 And the Lord said, I will blot out man that I created from the face of the earth, yea from man to the birds of the air, together with cattle and beasts that are in the field . . .(From The Book of Jasher, published by J.H. The Book of Jasher is mentioned twice in the Bible (Jos. 10:13; II Sam. 1:18). While it's evident the copy of this book that has survived to our time has been corrupted to some extent, the Scriptures seem to confirm the information contained in this section of Jasher:

GENESIS 6:7 So the LORD said, "I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them." (NKJV)

It appears likely that the objectives of the Flood were the destruction of the polluted human and animal bloodlines and the eradication of the forbidden knowledge that humanity had learned from the fallen host.

There is one other New Testament passage which hints at the sin of the angels before the flood. It is an enigmatic scripture found in Paul's first letter to the Corinthian church.

I CORINTHIANS 11:7 For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man. 8 For man is not from woman, but woman from man. 9 Nor was man created for the woman, but woman for the man. 10 For this reason the woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels. (NKJV)

In I Corinthians 11, Paul states the position of women in relation to men and says that the symbol of authority on a woman's head is needed "because of the angels." Without an understanding of what took place anciently between the fallen host and women, this verse is cryptic at best.

There is opposition to the view that the fallen angels are the "sons of God" referred to in Genesis 6. Some cite Matthew 22:29-30 and Mark 12:24-25 as objections, saying that these Scriptures clearly teach that angels do not marry.

MATTHEW 22:29 Jesus answered and said to them [the Sadducees], "You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God. 30 For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels of God in heaven." (NKJV)
MARK 12:24 Jesus answered and said to them, "Are you not therefore mistaken, because you do not know the Scriptures nor the power of God? 25 For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven." (NKJV)

First, these verses do not state whether angels can marry or procreate. Here Christ was referring only to the way things will be after the first resurrection of the dead. Additionally, the angels in heaven who did not sin are the example cited, not the angels confined to Tartarus because they sinned by marrying humans and producing offspring. To get a better perspective of what Christ was saying, let's look at the parallel account of this conversation in Luke's Gospel.

LUKE 20:34 And Jesus answered and said to them, "The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage. 35 But those who are counted worthy to attain that age, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage; 36 nor can they die anymore, for they are equal to the angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection." (NKJV)

Christ's primary purpose in his answer was to affirm the reality of the resurrection to these questioning Sadducees, who did not believe that there would be a resurrection. As you can clearly see from Luke's account of this confrontation, Christ is making two points about the age to come: (1) Resurrected humans will not marry, and (2) resurrected humans will be given eternal life, which the holy angels now have. Interpreting these Scriptures to mean that angels have never been able to marry or procreate reads more into them than was intended by Jesus.

Some also object by saying that Genesis 6:4 shows that there were nephilim on the earth before "the sons of God" came in to "the daughters of men" and also afterward; therefore, these giants cannot be the offspring of this union. Does the phrase "in those days, and also afterward" mean that the nephilim were present before the the sons of God cohabited with the daughters of men?

"In those days" plainly means the time after the "sons of God" had come down to earth; the fact that they had taken wives is disclosed in Genesis 6:2. In time sequence, chapter six of Genesis should follow chapter four; the fifth chapter is an inset into the story flow. "Afterward" specifies after the flood, when we see another instance of giants appearing, this time in the land of Canaan which the Israelites were to inherit (Num. 13:33). Satan once again tried to thwart God's plan by using these savage hybrids to occupy the land of Canaan and keep Abraham's offspring out. Obviously none of the nephilim survived the Flood.

These giants are often mentioned in the early books of the Old Testament until the last of them were finally killed off. The word nephilim only appears twice in the Old Testament (Gen 6:4; Num. 13:33), but these giants are also referred to as gibbor (Gen 6:4; Num. 13:33; Job 16:14) and rephaim when they reappear in a more limited fashion after the flood (Gen. 14:5; 15:20; Deu. 2:11, 20; 3:11, 13; Jos. 12:4; 13:12; 15:8; 17:15; 18:16; II Sam. 5:18, 22; 21:16, 18, 20, 22; 23:13; I Chr. 11:15; 14:9; 20:4, 6, 8; Isa. 17:5; 26:14). They were known by the proper names of Rephaim, Emim, Anakim, and Zamzummim.

CONCLUSION

As shown above, the evidence that "the sons of God" mentioned in Genesis 6 are fallen angels is substantial. By their sexual immorality, these angels produced offspring which were strong and violent. The concept of a race of giants which resulted from the union of gods and humans is virtually universal in the world's early civilizations.

The original intent of the angels may have only been to satisfy their forbidden lust. Yet the knowledge they brought with them and taught mankind caused society to develop at a more rapid technological pace than God had intended. This societal development was not positive, and it gave rise to a very violent society, one in which the nephilim apparently played a large role. God was forced to restrain in the Abyss the wicked angels that produced the nephilim, and cleanse the earth of them and the violence they brought with the great Flood.

Bene Elohim - Also bene Elim, a group of angels who belong to the order or choir of thrones. Meaning "sons of God," the bene Elohim are considered a part or division of the thrones, receiving the duty of forever singing the ineffable praise of God. As the sons of God, they are sometimes counted as the beings mentioned in the Book of Genesis (6:2) who save the daughters of men "and took to wife such of them as they chose." The "Council of the Gods" in Ancient Literature and the Book of Abraham

Chapters 3 and 4 of the Book of Abraham contain an account of the "Council of the Gods", including their discussion of the creation, the premortal existence, and the war in heaven. While this theme is neither fully developed nor coherent in the Bible or any other literature available in Joseph Smith's day, "since Cumorah" a great deal of scholarship has once again unearthed the ancient concept of the Council of the Gods. And as it turns out, Joseph Smith's Book of Abraham gives quite a fair accounting of the information scholars only began to find fully half a century after its publication. In this essay we will examine some of the information the scholars have uncovered about this important pre-mortal event.

R.H. Charles shows that the "Bereshith rabba" teaches "God takes counsel with the souls of the righteous before he creates the earth."1 According to the "Sefer Haparshiyot," and the "Midrash Kee Tov," Adam, Noah, Abraham, Enoch and Moses were among the righteous in attendance. These souls in the Council of the Gods were said to be "with God before the creation of the world,"2 and they "were consulted with and did consult God on many vital matters, and especially on the matter of Creation."3 The Syriac Apocalypse of Baruch distinguishes between righteous and common souls:

"The storehouses in which the fore-ordained number of souls is kept shall be opened, and the souls shall go forth, and the many souls shall appear all at once, as a host with one mind. And the first shall rejoice, and the last shall not be sad."4

Further, the "Midrash Tanhuma Pekude" tells of some spirits who "kept their first estate" and therefore they were "added upon", that is, they entered into another world which "is more beautiful than this."5

Julian Morgenstern has discussed the "Council of the gods" at great length using Old Testament scriptures in light of recent discoveries. Other scholars also elaborated on this theme so that now we have a rather complete description of the Council in Heaven. Morgenstern begins by demonstrating that the Hebrew "elohim" cannot mean judges or foreign rulers because the context of the entire Psalm 82 requires the word "gods" to mean "divine beings."6 These are "...divine beings of a certain class who were actually condemned by Yawheh to die, or at least to become mortal, like human beings."7

It is interesting in light of this that the "Council of the gods" has a judicial function. The technical term "to stand" (i.e. participate as a member), in the court is used both in Accadian - "uzuzzu" and in Hebrew - "ha'omedim" in Zechariah 3:3, which compares well with "'omed" in 1 Kings 22:19.8 The "Puhrum" - "assembly" of the gods was open to goddesses also. In the Gilgamesh Epic, "Ishtar reproaches herself for having advocated the flood in the assembly of the gods. We read that "In their (i.e. the gods) assembly her word is highly esteemed, is surpassing; she sits among them counting as much (with them) as Anum, their king. She is wise in intelligence, profundity, and knowledge."9 Professor Van Der Woude has noted the idea that the "Sons of Light" are saved from the "Sons of Darkness" in this "Council" and specifically, the heavenly host helps Melchisedek "fight against Belial and his angels." This is the famous war in heaven theme, also found in the Dead Sea Scrolls.10 This "council" is understood by Morgenstern to be the assembly of El, that is, those who helped El against his father, were the elohim. The "'adat El" was originally the "Council of El", though later it was also acknowledged as the "Council of Yahweh" which indicates "the mythological background of the expression and its North-Semitic origin..."11.

The idea of a council of divine beings, even the very "Sons of God" - (bene Elohim) was an uncomfortable one for the ancient Jews after the Babylonian captivity. It reflects a polytheism which was later shunned, and even stamped out with changes in the scripture to erase any lingering traces, though these were not all successfully destroyed. Morganstern shows how the post-exilic Jews tried to downplay the fact that "Elohim" is a plural form by contending weakly that Psalms 29:1 and 89:7, where we read of the "Bene elim" are actually "an artificial double plural formation of a singular 'ben 'el.' Morgenstern asserts that this reconstruction was perpetrated by the post-exilic Jews "to reduce as much as possible the extreme polytheism of the original 'bene 'el.' 'Bar elohim' of Dan. 3:25 would then be a late singular formation from an Aramaic plural, 'bere elohim,' equivilant to the Hebrew 'bene elohim.'"12 This has recently been confirmed in a striking way via Textual Criticism.

Emanuel Tov has noted that the Song of Moses (Deuteronomy 32:8) "referred to an assembly of the gods (cf. Ps. 82:1; 1 Kings 22:19), in which 'the Most High, 'Elyon,' fixed the boundaries of peoples according to the number of the sons of the God El." He goes on to admit "...the scribe of an early text... did not feel at ease with this possibly polytheistic picture and replaced "Bene El," (sons of El), with "Bene Yisrael", "The sons of Israel," thus giving the text a different direction by the change of one word... A similar change may be reflected in all textual witnesses of Ps. 96:7: 'Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the peoples, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength,' when compared with the presumably original (polytheistic) text of Ps. 29:1, 'Ascribe to the Lord, O divine beings,

(Bene Elohim), ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.' Psalm 29, which also in other details reflects situations and phrases known from Ugaritic texts, does, in this detail, provide a polytheistic picture of the assembly of gods."13

P. Kyle McCarter, Jr., shows the rendering of "sons of God" in Deut. 32:8 has the support of the Septuagint [the Greek Old Testament also rendered LXX] and other versions. "The original can be taken to mean that Yahweh was one of the sons of God to whom Elyon parceled out peoples. The alteration of "h'lhym" (or perhaps 'l or 'lym) to "ysr'l" suppressed this interpretation."14 The LXX reads:

"When the Most High divided the nations, when he separated the sons of Adam, he set the bounds of the nations according to the number of the angels of God."15

Ronald S. Hendel simply said, "...somewhere along the line in the transmission of the standard rabbinic Bible someone felt the need to clean up the text by literally rewriting it and substituting "sons of Israel" for the original "Sons of God" in Deuteronomy 32:8." These "Sons of God" are "indeed divine beings."16 Gerhard Von Rad notes that "Creation is part of the aetiology of Israel!" And he further notes that "Another rooting of Israel in the plans of Jahweh for the world is to be seen in Deut. 32:8: 'When the Most High gave to the nations their inheritance, when he separated the sons of men, he fixed the bounds of the peoples according to the number of the 'Elohim beings'; but Jahweh's portion is his people, Jacob his allotted heritage."17 William F. Albright believed that this verse should be read in conjunction with Job 38:7 - "When the morning stars rejoiced together And all the sons of God shouted with joy." Why? "Because there are many passages in the Old Testament where the stars serve as a simile for 'multitude'; specific references to 'counting' the stars are found at Genesis 15:5 [dealing with Abraham] and Psalms 147:4." Hence the idea here being that "according to the stars," meaning "God created and assigned abodes to a multitude of different nations, but of them all he chose Israel as his special charge."18 We'll return to this thought when we deal with the Book of Mormon. For now it is interesting that Mitchell Dahood says Psalm 147:4 means "To each star Yahweh gives a number and a name...He who brings forth their host by number, he calls them all by name."19

The ancient idea of the "Council of the gods" meets us in the Sumerian and Akkadian religions, as well. Psalm 29 "...is a Yahwistic adaptation of an older Canaanite hymn to the storm-god Ball..."20 Since the early 1900's we have known that "The Sumerians and Akkadians pictured their gods as human in form, governed by human emotions, and living in the same type of world as did men. In almost every particular the world of the gods is therefore a projection of terrestrial conditions...Thus in the domain of the gods we have a reflection of older forms, of the terrestrial Mesoptamian state as it was in pre-historic times. The assembly which we find in the world of the gods rested on a broad democratic basis..."21

Professor Cross agrees that in Israelite poetry, the language we have cited as indicative of the assembly of gods "is generally applied to the host of secondary supernatural beings who surround Yahweh, and prostrate themselves before him."22 We are fairly sure that "the early poets of Israel were heavily influenced by the poetic imagery and modes of expression of the peoples with whom they came in contact."23

The assembly of gods were rather frequently assembled at the "Ubshuukkinna," that is, a large court, where they met friends and relatives who had come from afar to participate in the assembly as important business was to be transacted, usually beginning with an embrace as a welcome into the company of the gods.24 The leadership of the gods was usually headed by the head god of the gods, who began the discussion which was "largely in the hands of the so-called 'ilu rabiutum', the 'great gods,' or better yet, the 'senior gods.'"25 This is strikingly similar to Joseph Smith's translation of Genesis 1:1 - "The head one of the Gods, brought forth the Gods."26 Joseph Smith's translation of the Hebrew word "Bereshiyth" according to the Hebrew Dictionary in Strong's Concordance means "the first, in place, time, order or rank - beginning, chief, first (fruits, part, time), principal thing."27 Joseph Smith's translation would come from "re' shiyth / bara' / 'elohiym / 'eth / hashamayim / v'eth / ha'arts," meaning - "The Head one of the Gods organized the heaven and the earth."28 Gesenius' Lexicon notes that the "beth" "refers to a multitude, in the midst of...among in." The lexicon shows that it can mean "among" as in "among the nations" (2 Ki. 18:5) It can also mean "before, in the presence of..."29

When the discussion began, we are told, "the intrinsic merit of a proposal" was given due process and consideration, with "wise council" and a "testifying of intelligence." The gods were constantly "asking one another," all manner of things in the discussions eventually with the result that "issues were clarified and the gods had opportunity to voice their opinions for or against, at times espousing proposals they later bitterly regretted."30 This is precisely what we find in the Book of Abraham Chapter 3. "These two facts exist, that there are two spirits, one being more intelligent than the other; there shall be another more intelligent than they...I am more intelligent than they all." The Gods then make proposals, "We will go down for there is space there, and we will take of these materials, and we will make an earth whereon these may dwell... Whom shall I send? And one answered...Here am I, send me. And another answered and said: Here am I, send me. And the Lord said: I will send the first. And the second was angry and kept not his first estate..." (Abr. 3:19, 24, 27, 28, etc.,).

As we have seen "the function of this divine assembly were in part those of a court of law," and "the assembly is the authority which grants kingship."31 It is the same picture we find in the Book of Abraham, Ch. 3! Once the head god is chosen to carry out a particular function (Abr. 3:27!) that god is clothed in a garment and having been armed, then carries out the battle against the gods who disagreed with him (Abr. 3:28!) Thus, in the war in heaven the righteous hosts "fight against Belial and his angels."32 We know this is the case because at Job 1:6-12 and 2:1-7 we find Yahweh assembled with his heavenly host, designated as the "Bene Elohim", literally "the sons of God", and "One among their number, although one obviously discharging a particular and constant function, is hasatan."33 Namely, "the adversary" or "the accuser" taking on a "role of fixed hostility to mankind."34 Morgenstern notes that the important thing in this picture, is not so much Satan as Yahweh, "the graphic picture of Yahweh, seated upon his throne, surrounded by His heavenly host, the 'bene elohim,' divine beings of rank inferior to Yahweh Himself, his personal attendants and ministers of his Will and purpose, gathered together as the ''adat 'el' to pronounce judgment."35

I cannot find a better description of the Book of Abraham picture, but Morgenstern is using a composite picture of Old Testament and Ugaritic, Sumerian, and Akkadian lore to come up with this scenario! "The picture here is identical with that in Isaiah 6:; 1 Ki. 22:19-23 and Zecheriah 3," which "unhesitatingly designates Yahweh's heavenly attendants as 'elohim', 'gods' obviously identical with 'bene ha'elohim' of Job 1:6 and 2:1." The tie in with Mormonism is more obvious when we see Satan was cast out of heaven, along with his followers, "but only some, and these impliedly only a small group, of the great hosts of angels. The rest, it says explicitly, restrained themselves."36 Mormons recognize that only 1/3 of the hosts of heaven rebelled. Satan's sin? "Give me thy glory!" Or as Morgenstern puts it, "And one from out the order of angels, having turned away with the order that was under him, conceived an impossible thought, to place his throne higher than the clouds above the earth, that he might become equal in rank to my power." And make no mistake about it, Satan was one of the "Sarim", that is the leaders, the head prince of his group.37

More to the point, we now know who the "we" are in Genesis 1:26, who were involved with the creation! "This would seem to be a brief fragment of the creation tradition basic to Genesis 1, in its oldest, pre-literary form, as it must have been current in Israel for some time prior to the composition of Pg about 400 B.C. According to this tradition Yahweh took counsel with his Heavenly host with regard to the creation [Cf. BofAbr. "we will go down for there is space there..."!] of man."38 Interestingly, in today's Torah commentary we read from the editor that the statement in Genesis 1:26, "Let us make man..." "is spoken to an angelic court"!39

Astonishingly, we find that Yahweh assigns mortality to the "bene elohim"! The word "temutun" means "ye shall become mortal."40 And it is to the "bene elohim" that Yahweh is telling this to, since "...it means that they must forfeit completely their original, divine nature, and with it undoubtedly whatever divine powers and prerogatives they possessed, and take on the nature of human beings and in particular become subject to death, become mortal."41 This is precisely what the Book of Abraham teaches, but nowhere have I found anything similar in print in Joseph Smith's day other than in the Book of Abraham. This concept was completely foreign in Smith's day, and still is a supreme heresy to much of Christendom even today! "It has a definite polytheistic basis, at least in its assumption that some divine being other than God Himself might claim supreme dominion."42 That no one is going to make up a story like that can be clearly seen from the fact that no one in Joseph Smith's day or for hundreds of years before ever did make up such a story and claim it was scripture! Now it is a confirmed view thanks to recent discoveries and decades and decades of scholarship and work. Joseph Smith put it all together in succinct and coherent form almost overnight. And not only is nothing missing in this account, but no extra or demonstrably incorrect details are added.

QABALISTIC MAGIC

Qabalah can provide the basis of magic activities with the aim of transforming the life of the individual by creating synergy between everyday life, e.g. the human body, and universal creative forces as identified by the Qabalah. This is also an act of healing as the total sum of cosmic powers correspond to human wholeness, and therefore develops our true capability which is genetically enabled at birth but must be utilized by will.

"The art of the magician lies therefore in aligning himself with cosmic force in order that the operation he desires to perform may come about as a part of the working of cosmic activities. If he be truly purified and dedicated, this will be the case with all his desires; and if he be not truly purified and dedicated he is no adept, and his word is not a word of power" (Dion Fortune;118)

All kinds of healing and magic works in the same way: The healer-magician enters a state of meditative excitement, calls upon cosmic powers for protection and help, and visualizes or simulates the desired results while "seeing" and trusting that it happens. In qabalistic magic the involved powers are clothed in the symbolism of western culture and religion, but the process is universal.

The results of healing magic can never be forecasted: Even though any ritual is carrried out with the intention of a desired result, the only certain effect is the clearing of channels between spirit, soul, personality and body. What the ego-personality desires - or even the soul - may be different from the will of spirit. Earthly suffering may sustain if it is the condition is a conscious choice of the soul or of spirit, even though, of course, the ego disagrees. Healing can lead to good health, more money and better sex, but not necessarily so. You never know what energy will do when it has its way. The term 'spiritual technology' is meant to signify this intuition.

The Golden Section and the Pentagram

Perhaps the most dynamic vortex for the creation of life on Earth appears in the ratio known as the Golden Section (also "Golden Mean" or phi). The Golden Section appears naturally in many ways. A repeated manifestation is in five-fold geometric forms like the pentacle or Pentagram — the five-pointed star.

The property of the Pentagram is that its lines bisect each other according to the ratios of the Golden Section. In other words, the relationship of AB to BC and of BC to AC is phi. And all other internal divisions of this figure produce the same proportional relationship.

The ideal human proportions lie in the ratio defined by the Golden Section, those ratios occurring, for example, between the arm, the hand, and the digits of the fingers. Phi also appears when the human body is placed within a Pentagram: The head and limbs reach out to the points, and the sexual organs lie in the center.

According to tradition, "Man is the measure of all things." But humanity takes its place within a vast and beautiful Creation. So perhaps it would be more accurate to say, "Phi is the measure of all things — including Man."

And wherever the Golden Section, the Pentagram, or repetitions of the number five are found in the pattern of the natural world, conditions are most beneficial to health, beauty, and creation. This is the ratio that governs the emergent, dynamic vortex of biological life.

Vortex Effects

There are two basic kinds of motion within a vortex: centripetal, and centrifugal.

A centripetal vortex — that is, the inward-spinning vortex that Nature seems to prefer over centrifugal ones — achieves maximum momentum and energy at the center (or, more precisely, the edge of center). As a centripetal vortex approaches the center, the maximum amount of energy becomes theoretically infinite (not taking into account energy loss through friction, sound, waste heat, etc.).

Any forest is a prodigious example of the power of the energy vortex in motion. The vortex of energy that manifests in a forest increases the forest's biomass to the order of hundreds of tons every day — silently, effectively, for the benefit of all life.

The Alchemical Pentagram

The use of the number five in the Pentagram, or Pentagon, is historically reflected in magic, alchemy, architecture, and landscape temples like Sedona. It has been used throughout history in order to imbue physical form with sacred energy.

Pierre Charles l'Enfant, architect of the United States Capitol building in Washington, DC, used the Pentagram to express the bursting new ideals of the young American republic.

The ancient Greeks and the Renaissance artists used it to express the ideal forms of the temple and the human body.

Geomancers look for its five-fold resonance in star patterns and in the natural and artificial landscape.

Magical Curriculum

World of Symbols

Cabalists use symbolic methods to read the message hidden by the words of the sacred texts. Especially using numerological rules "No one should be surprised", writes Agrippa von Netteshein, "that things can be divined by the numerical value of letters. According to the Pythagoreans and the Hebrew Cabalists, in numbers there are hidden mysteries which few understand. By numbers is possible to work out the essence of letters and names." Some of best known methods are:

Gematria is a process of Cabalistic magic. The object is to bring together words with the same numerical value. Each letter of the Hebrew alphabet has a corresponding numerical value, so that the value of the world is the sum of the values of its letters. Such words are brought together in order to reveal their hidden meaning. Thus in Henrew where "one" is "ehad" and "love" is "ahaba", the two words refer to the same transcendental reality because they have the same value(in one case 1+8+4=13 and in other case 1+5+2+5=13)

Notarikon is a method using the first, middle or last letters of a word to form another.

Temura combines both gematria and notarikon.

Doctrinal Resources

Cabala means tradition or reception. In mythology it begins with the oral tradition given to Moses in Sinai, but perhaps its roots are even in prehistory. It was the 12th century that Abraham ben Huya wrote down the doctrine in the Sefer Bahir, by drawing together earlier materials. The Zohar appeared in the 13th century, and it is probably the work of Moses of Leon. It is placed under thee symbolic authority of Rabbi Simeon bar Yokhai helped by the prophet Elijah. During the time doctrinal renewal camed from Abraham ben David and his son Isaac the Blind who helped to explain the relationship between God and his manifestation, italian writers including Juda Ben Yagar, Ezra ben Solomon and the brothers Isaac, who defined the nature of intermundane space, and from german writers like Abraham Abulafia, who added a technique of spiritual experience to the doctrine. In the Christian world many people began to take interest to the Cabala including Pico della Mirandola, Reuchlin Guillaume, Robert Fludd, Paracelsus, Jakob Bohme, Kircher.

A Primordial Speech

The Cabala is, by nature, Gnostic a search for the secret of Creation. Like all Gnosticism it proposes a cosmogony in which man is an actor with a major role or even a God's collaborator. In this way, the Cabala attempts to answer the problem of evil. But while other Gnosticism are manisfested in profusion of images Cabalistic speculations are rigorous, combinative and mathematical. Under the fancy there can be found structures of scientific thoughts. It is susprising that the Cabalistic writers embarace all spheres of knowledge from astrology to geology which made Cabala, besides speculations, to contain sometimes surprising scientific facts.

The Divison of the Soul

One theory dominates the Zohar - the divison of soul into 3 parts: nefech, the organic breath; rouah the spirit; and nechama the power of man. The soul which comes to animate a body refuses to leave its original place, but in the end it must always obey God's will. It must win the complement of perfection from the material world and, at the same time it is charged with the task of impregnating matter with a share of spirituality in order to purify it and draw it upwards. Thus, the body is a combination of saintliness and stain; it is a mediator of cosmic forces.

The cosmic drama always tells a story of love. All texts and all the evidence point in this direction. The Cabalist has to fight against the darkness of the world and his quest is to try to illuminate it. The intense passion which guides him shows that love and knowledge are often synonyms. The dryness of the heart is the enemy, the face of that evil which the initiate must root out from within himself. The secret, in the end, lies beoynd morality: it is the secret of the source the Zohar describes and which the Cabala calls upon us to rediscover

The 6th Trumpet Judgment (Revelation 9:13-21) is the destruction of 1/3 of mankind by 200 million demonic horsemen. Although the tendency is to interpret these horsemen with a modern parallel of military hardware, it will probably be as straightforward as the text seems to demand.

The sixth trumpet, the second Woe! (9:13-21)

Rev 9:13 The sixth angel sounded his trumpet, and I heard a voice coming from the horns of the golden altar that is before God.
14 It said to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, "Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates."
15 And the four angels who had been kept ready for this very hour and day and month and year were released to kill a third of mankind.
16 The number of the mounted troops was two hundred million. I heard their number.
17 The horses and riders I saw in my vision looked like this: Their breastplates were fiery red, dark blue, and yellow as sulphur. The heads of the horses resembled the heads of lions, and out of their mouths came fire, smoke and sulphur.
18 A third of mankind was killed by the three plagues of fire, smoke and sulphur that came out of their mouths.
19 The power of the horses was in their mouths and in their tails; for their tails were like snakes, having heads with which they inflict injury.

v13 - The sixth angel sounded his trumpet, and I heard a voice coming from the horns of the golden altar that is before God. - The golden altar is connected to the prayers of the saints (Rev 8:3). The sixth trumpet is in response to the prayers of the saints. For horn, see Lev 8:15, when Moses slaughtered the bull he took some of the blood with his

finger and touched the horns of the altar to purify the altar.

v14 - It said to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, "Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates" - The four angels are bound so they must evil, they are released at God's command, whose purpose is to get men to repent, see verses 20-21. The four angels cover each direction of the compass, the idea being that they are released to affect the whole earth. Compare these angels with the first four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, 7:1. The Euphrates marks the boundary between Israel and her enemies (Gen 15:18, Deu 1:7, Jos 1:4), Babylon which is on the Euphrates would be to the North of Israel and it is from the North that her enemies came (Jer 25:9, Ezek 26:7, 39:2). Compare this with the sixth bowl (Rev 16:12) in which the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up to prepare the way for the kings of the East. Compare also with the four horsemen of the Apocalypse.

v15 - And the four angels who had been kept ready for this very hour and day and month and year were released to kill a third of mankind. - The precise timing of their release indicates that they are under the divine control of God. Their purpose is to kill a third of mankind, no more no less, that is a limited number, because this is a warning to mankind. From the precise timing of their release this seems to be a specific event in history, and is therefore probably eschatological, in the light of the discussion in the next verse this event corresponds to the second coming (compare with Mat 24:36, Acts 1:7, Gen 7:11) or at least the final battle associated with it. Compare the sixth seal, sixth trumpet and sixth bowl, they all seem to refer to either the last battle or the second coming.

v16 - The number of the mounted troops was two hundred million. I heard their number. - The troops are mounted, meaning that they are prepared for war. Two hundred million is a large number which he could not count, but he heard their number. Compare the description here with the chariots of God in Psa 68:17, the horses like a swarm of locusts in Jer 51:27 and the horses that fly like a vulture swooping to devour of Hab 1:8. In Joel the army invades mankind on the day of the Lord (Joel 2:11-11) as this is the sixth trumpet and the seventh trumpet depicts the handing over of the world to Christ, his eternal reign and the judgement, this vision corresponds to the last great battle (see Joel 3:1-2, 9-16). The last great battle is also found in Rev 16:14, 17:14, 19:17, 20:7. Note that the sixth seal also corresponds to the second coming (Rev 6:12). The sixth bowl refers to the battle on the great day of God Almighty (Rev 16:14) and the second coming is mentioned in the next verse (16:15). This is another example of the parallelism of the book.

v17 - The horses and riders I saw in my vision looked like this: Their breastplates were fiery red, dark blue, and yellow as sulphur. The heads of the horses resembled the heads of lions, and out of their mouths came fire, smoke and sulphur. - Here is the only place in which John indicates that what he saw was in a vision. The breastplates had the same colours as the fire, smoke and sulphur which came out of the horses' mouths, see v18, this indicates the unified purpose of both horse and rider. Compare the lions' heads here with the lions' teeth of the locusts, this indicates strength.

v18 - A third of mankind was killed by the three plagues of fire, smoke and sulphur that came out of their mouths.- This imagery seems to refers to war. The imagery like the locusts is similar to Joel 2:4-5, 'They have the appearance of horses; they gallop along like cavalry. With a noise like that of chariots they leap over the mountain tops, like a crackling fire consuming stubble, like a mighty army drawn up for battle.' Once again it is a limited number that is killed, a third of mankind is killed. Fire and sulphur remind us of Sodom and Gomorrah (Gen 19:24, Luke 17:29), this was God's judgement on wickedness, a foretaste of hell (Jude 1:7 cf. Rev 14:10-11).

v19 - The power of the horses was in their mouths and in their tails; for their tails were like snakes, having heads with which they inflict injury. - The snakes indicate their demonic origin, Luke 10:19. The three plagues of fire, smoke and sulphur came out of their mouths, v17, 18. Their tails also inflict injury. The word for snake (ophis) is the same word used to describe Satan in 12:9 (see also 12:14, 15, 20:2 cf. John 3:14, 2 Cor 11:3)

v20 - The rest of mankind that were not killed by these plagues still did not repent of the work of their hands they did not stop worshipping demons, and idols of gold, silver, bronze, stone and wood--idols that cannot see or hear or walk. - Mankind is here accused of worshipping demons and in the fifth trumpet they are plagued by demons and possibly also in the sixth trumpet, the warning fits the sin. Later we find mankind worshipping the dragon and the beast (13:4) and his image (13:15) that is idolatry. The plagues are directed at unrepentant mankind, not at God's people, those who survive these plagues still did not repent. Some are killed by these plagues but to the rest they are warnings to man to repent. Consider Jesus reaction to the persecution of the Jews by Pilate or to those who died when the tower fell on those in Siloam (Luke 13:1-5) his reaction was to say to the people 'do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem? I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.' Despite the warning plagues from God, some natural some not, man refuses to worship God and give him the glory as Creator, Amos 4:10.

First man is guilty of idolatry, worshipping created things not the Creator, Rom 1:23. He breaks the first tablet of the law (Ex 20:3-11, Deu 5:7, 2 King 17:35-39) rather than worship the creator (Rev 14:7). The stupidity of idolatry is emphasised by the phase 'idols that cannot see or hear or walk' in contrast to the living creator God, Dan 5:23, Psa 115:4-5, Jer 10:5. This hammers home the point that despite these plagues mankind prefers to worship created things rather than God, the message of Revelation is that mankind is to worship God and Him alone. Consider the worship of the living creatures and the elders of the Creator God, 4:8-11; the worship of the Lamb, 5:8 ff.; all the inhabitants of the earth worship the beast, 13:8 (compare the worship of demons and idols here with the worship of the beast and his image in 13:8, 15).

Consider also the message of the first angel flying in mid-air proclaiming the eternal gospel which is to fear God and give him glory and to worship him as Creator, 14:6-7; consider the dire warning to those who worship the beast and his image in 14:9-11. Twice John is rebuked because he worshipped an angel (19:10, 22:8) and is told to worship God. In the case of the church at Pergamum and Thyatira eating food offered to idols is condemned (2:14, 20). Note that in 21:8 the place of idolaters is in the fiery lake of burning sulphur, we should therefore see the trumpets as agents of God's mercy rather than wrath, despite the fact that people do not repent. Notice the response of those at Ephesus who practised sorcery, they publicly burned their books on sorcery; it is better to burn ones books on the occult than to burn in the lake of fire. God's decree in Deu 7:5, 12:3 is to break down the altars, smash the sacred stones and burn the idols in the fire, see Josiah's response in 2 Kings 23 who did as described in Deuteronomy.

v21 - Nor did they repent of their murders, their magic arts, their sexual immorality or their thefts - This is the first indictment against mankind, they did not repent, see also: Rev 11:18, Rev 14:7, Rev 14:9-11, Rev 16:5-6, Rev 16:8-11. Having rejected God as creator mankind now inevitably breaks the second tablet of the law (Deu 5:17 and Rom 1:24, 28). The punishment is indicated in Rev 21:8, their (murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practise magic arts) lot will be in the lake of burning sulphur.

Trumpet 6: Deadly Attack

The voice instructs the angel with the sixth trumpet to release the “four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates” (verse 14). Since they are bound, they must be fallen angels or demons. Their release is by divine permission only and is intended to allow them to function as agents of God’s wrath.

While some prefer to view this invading horde as demons, I believe they are an actual army. The battles that follow involve killing men, and the attackers are described as men (verses 16-18). The weapons with “breastplates of fire” could well be modern weapons. The “breastplates of fire” and the “fire and smoke” that shoot out of both ends of these vehicles certainly sound like tanks, airplanes or some modern weaponry.

If John really saw the future, including the great end-time wars, he would have witnessed things he could hardly understand, let alone describe. Tanks, guns, flamethrowers and laser beams all fit these possible designations. While the horde of demons is unleashed to torture and afflict men, the horde of soldiers is unleashed to attack them as well.

11-1-07 - DREAM - This morning I was aware of being in a vehicle with other people & we were all sitting in the vehicle, & it look like we were going too leave there. Then all of a sudden I looked & I saw a very very dark cloud that was heading towards us. It looked like a tornado it had the shape of one & it looked like a feth five it was so large & pitch black. I was aware that I was trying too get the person to leave very fast but for some reason we didn't we kept sitting there as we watch this darkness approach us. As it was moving closer & closer toward us I realize that this was not a tornado because there was no winds. I realized that this was not a tornado it looked like a tornado. I was very frightened & I was aware of putting my arms over my head as we sat in this vehicle & I knew it was going to get us. As it moved closer & was aware that we went through this blackness & made it through. It was or look like the form of a tornado & it was moving along & if anything was in its path well them would be caught up in it.. All I know is that we could not leave there and as this dark blackness cover us & went on through & realized that what ever this was I did not know. All I know that it could kill & destroy everything in its path, but I survive it as it pass on through. What could this be that can kill human life. Is there something coming like that which can kill human lives like a plague? I know that I was able too make it through this blackness that was coming toward me. It didn't hurt me or kill me like I thought it was going too do, but it was too large to not to kill those it blew over.

Russians started getting a lot of oil in 1997. As of June 1st they've paid all their debts, are talking about backing their currency with gold, have kicked out International monetary fund and Chase Manhattan bank and the Rockefeller's. In the 30's there was a theory that light, sweet, crude oil was from dead dinosaurs and deeper down, the oil was being continually manufactured. He said that's true and the Russians are drilling in Siberia, 38,000 feet down and one company from the US is being tagged to go assist them with this. The powers that be think the can pick the illusion of choice out of the matrix and no one will care. He spoke well of Ron Paul and said he's the only one willing to defend the Constitution and how he is being ignored by major media. (Some years back in a joint public lecture by Major Scott Ritter, who led the UN inspections of Iraq through 1998 and reporter Seymour Hersh, Ritter said Israel has 400 nukes. Hersh said he had learned Israel has 600 nuclear warheads).

NONE of Israel's underground "Dimona" facility is for generating peaceful nuclear power, only the continuing production of MORE intimidating nuclear weapons (as well as chemical and biological).

Israel, with the largest, high tech conventional armed forces in the Middle East (2nd only to America's), also has Submarines, Tanks, Artillery, Missile launchers (even ICBMs that can reach anywhere in Europe) and Aircraft, each that can deliver Israel's nuclear warheads. "Frightened," but nuclear-bloated Israel, has the nuclear capability to turn Iran and ALL Muslim nations to desolate "glass" - in minutes!

February 03, 2012 "Information Clearing House" --- During an interview last month on CBS' Face the Nation, Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta set the record straight on Iran: "Are they trying to develop a nuclear weapon? No." But if you read recent news reports lately, you'd think otherwise.

The media coverage on Iran is mirroring the coverage in the lead-up to the Iraq war: grand claims about a smoking gun that doesn't exist. For example, The New York Times incorrectly reported last month that the latest International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) report on Iran concluded that their nuclear program had a military objective. The paper's public editor, Arthur Brisbane, was forced to acknowledge their mistake and wrote: "Some readers, mindful of the faulty intelligence and reporting about Saddam Hussein's weapons program, are watching the Iran nuclear coverage very closely." Other media outlets such as National Public Radio, PBS and The Washington Post have been challenged on their coverage too.

A recent publication from the Center for Strategic and International Studies titled "The IAEA's Iran Report and Misplaced Paranoia," noted that "With few exceptions, these revelations are not exactly new. More importantly, neither is the thrust of the report: that Iran is developing some capabilities that can only be understood as preliminaries to the development of nuclear weapons. Unfortunately, early coverage of the report's release gives the opposite impression."

Many have recognized that the media failed to do its job in the lead-up to the Iraq war. The potential consequences of treading on that same path with Iran are grave. The U.S. has thus far spent over $1.2 trillion of borrowed money on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Military action against Iran would be disastrous for the region and for U.S. moral standing. A serious diplomatic track based on mutual trust and respect is the only way to achieve increased transparency.

February 02, 2012 "Information Clearing House" --- Watching top U.S. intelligence officials present the annual "Worldwide Threat Assessment" before the Senate Intelligence Committee, I found myself wondering if they would depart from the key (if politically delicate) consensus judgment that Iran is NOT working on a nuclear weapon.

In last year's briefing, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper had stood firm on this key point, despite severe pressure to paint Iran in more pernicious terms. On Tuesday, I was relieved to see in Clapper's testimony a reiteration of the conclusions of a formal National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) of November 2007, issued unanimously by all 16 U.S. intelligence agencies, including judgments like this:

"We judge with high confidence that in fall 2003, Tehran halted its nuclear weapons program; Š Tehran's decision to halt its nuclear weapons program suggests it is less determined to develop nuclear weapons than we have been judging since 2005."

Sadly, this judgment still comes as news to many of those Americans who are malnourished on the low-protein gruel of the Fawning Corporate Media (FCM) - even though the NIE was immediately declassified in 2007 and has been in the public domain for more than four years.

Granted, former President George W. Bush did not like it - not one bit. In an unusually revealing comment in his memoir Decision Points, Bush complained bitterly that "the NIE tied my hands on the military side," preventing him from attacking Iran. That was the course strongly favored by hawkish Vice President Dick Cheney with his PhD summa cum laude in Preventive War.

And, America's FCM consistently ignores the official NIE when writing news stories hyping Iran's nuclear threat. However, if you read the articles very closely you may see references to Iran supposedly working toward the "capacity to build" nuclear weapons, not that Iran is actually working on building a nuclear bomb.

The distinction is important, but it is so subtle as to be misleading. Most casual readers would simply assume that Iran is building a nuclear bomb.

The FCM's rhetorical shift from accusing Iran of "building" nukes to seeking a "capacity to build" them is reminiscent of Bush's sleight of hand when he went from talking about Iraq's supposed WMD "stockpiles" to its WMD "programs" - after it turned out there were no WMD stockpiles.

Oddly, even when Israeli sources concur with this key point that Iran has NOT decided to build a nuclear bomb - as the Israeli newspaper Haaretz and Defense Minister Ehud Barak indicated recently - the FCM in the United States continues to leave the impression among Americans that Iran is on the verge of having nukes. You will almost never see in a major U.S. newspaper the assessment - backed by the 16 U.S. intelligence agencies - that Iran is NOT building nuclear weapons. At most, you'll see a boilerplate phrase about Iran denying that it is. You're also not likely to see references to the fact that Israel has a sophisticated nuclear arsenal of its own.

'Tell-It-Like-It-Is' Intelligence

Still, it's encouraging to see U.S. intelligence officials resist bending with the prevailing political winds the way the malleable CIA director, George Tenet, and his deputy John McLaughlin did when they orchestrated the fraudulent October 2002 NIE on Iraq's "weapons of mass destruction."

After they left in disgrace (having contributed to the bloody war in Iraq), fresh institutional blood was brought in to manage intelligence estimates. In a professional sense, the two were not a hard act to follow. But courage can still be a rare commodity in the careerist world of Official Washington.

What happened is that the new managers launched a bottom-up assessment of all the evidence on Iran's nuclear development program. They reached conclusions based on what they found, not on what was politically expedient; they spoke truth to power, and, in the process, helped prevent yet another disastrous war.

This year, though, there was good reason to worry that the current intelligence managers might succumb to pressure for a more "politically correct" course. One factor has been the rising crescendo in the FCM, echoing the Israeli government's hyperbolic fears regarding a "nuclear threat" from Iran.

The FCM, for example, gave unconscionably inflammatory coverage to a highly misleading November 2011 report by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on Iran. The FCM ignored available evidence from WikiLeaks documents showing that the new IAEA management was collaborating behind-the-scenes with U.S. and Israeli officials on the Iran issue.

And there was growing concern that National Intelligence Director Clapper might be outmaneuvered by the new CIA Director David Petraeus, the retired four-star general who is always the darling of Congress.

The ambitious Petraeus's own words have shown him groveling before the Israel Lobby - to the point of backing away from his own congressional testimony of March 2010, a small segment of which was implicitly critical of Israeli intransigence on the issue of Palestine.

E-mails revealed Petraeus begging neocon pundit Max Boot to help him withstand criticism from neocon circles over the rare burst of honesty that had slipped into Petraeus's prepared testimony. Petraeus then mistakenly shared the e-mail train with blogger James Morris, who made them public.

On Tuesday, Petraeus was pandering again in his gratuitous repetition of the neocons' characterizations of the IAEA report. Petraeus said: "The IAEA Š report was a very accurate reflection of reality, of the situation on the ground. I think that is the authoritative document when it comes to informing the public of all the countries of the world of the situation there."

This is a remarkable statement coming from the head of the CIA, an agency that was one of the principal drafters of the NIE in 2007, which stands at variance with the politically tinged IAEA report, which labored to make the case that Iran was gaining expertise needed to build a nuclear bomb.

However, there were, in fact, significant overlaps in the IAEA's description of Iran's nuclear program and the key judgments of the NIE, but you would hardly know that from reporting in the FCM. The IAEA report contains no smoking gun regarding Iran's intentions about building nuclear weapons, but notes that much of Iran's progress occurred prior to fall 2003 - when the NIE reported that Iran abandoned its weapons program.

Still, many pundits and politicians walked away with two misleading messages from the IAEA report: that it refuted the NIE and that Iran is now making a break for the bomb. Both representations are false, yet the assertions have been repeated often enough to give them traction with the public and Congress, which was evident in Petraeus's remarks.

As Petraeus knows better than most, the National Intelligence Estimate is the genre of intelligence assessment that the U.S. government considers "authoritative." I found it shameful, but not surprising, that he would identify himself with the IAEA rather than with the U.S. intelligence community. Shameful pandering, which Clapper - to his credit - would have none of.

The way the wind seems to be blowing from the White House and Capitol Hill, however, I think it a good bet that, before many months go by, Petraeus will be taking over the job of his current nominal boss, and Clapper will be set out to pasture for special services not rendered.

The Media on the Briefing

True to form, the FCM offered little truth in its reports on the Tuesday briefing - and quite a lot of distortion. Very little mention was made of Clapper's key assertion that Iran is not building nuclear weapons, just as the FCM discreetly averted its eyes and ears from Defense Secretary Leon Panetta's definitive statement to that effect on Jan. 8.

The Washington Post initially ran an article by Greg Miller titled, "Iran, perceiving threat from West, willing to attack on U.S. soil, U.S. intelligence report finds." That title was then squished to fit at the top of page one, right next to a smiling photo of Mr. and Mrs. Romney, and reads "U.S. spy agencies see new Iran risk: Tehran more willing to launch attacks on American soil, they say."

For his story, Miller selects the two short paragraphs in which Clapper claims that some Iranian officials - probably including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei - "are now more willing to conduct an attack in the United States in response to real or perceived U.S. actions that threaten the regime." (I can readily imagine the word-smithing by senior officials that yielded that profound observation.)

In an instant commentary, Salon blogger Glen Greenwald described Miller's article - correctly - as a "monument to mindless stenographic journalism" and asks if anyone is still "doubting that there is a concerted media-aided fear-mongering campaign aimed at Iran."

For the record, the New York Times' Eric Schmitt led off his report in a similar vein: "Some senior Iranian leaders are now more willing to carry out attacks inside the U.S. in response to perceived American threats against their country," citing senior intelligence officials.

It is not at all picayune to note that the Times dropped the "real or" from Clapper's "in response to real or perceived U.S. actions that threaten the regime," thus removing the point that Iran might actually encounter "real" threats from the United States. All that high-priced word-smithing for nothing!

As if further proof were needed about the bias of the FCM, blogger Michael Rozeff took the Boston Globe to task for piecing together two unconnected parts of Clapper's testimony to leave the impression that Iran is making enriched uranium in order to conduct an attack on the U.S.

Who Will Tell the Truth?

As a former analyst of Soviet affairs, I became familiar with how to dissect controlled media. And as a liaison officer to Radio Free Europe and Radio Liberty during the late Sixties, I learned ways to penetrate denied areas with radio waves and other means.

It was those two radio stations, plus VOA and the BBC, that played such a key role in informing Russians and East Europeans about what was possible in the outside world. So, how to break through the blanket of the Fawning Corporate Media to give Americans a shot at knowing what is going on?

It seems a kind of delicious irony that - how to say this - the Russians Are Coming to help those of us hoping to break through the FCM and make our reporting and analysis available to our fellow citizens. As senators were clapping for Clapper, RT (for Russia Today) asked to interview me for their evening news program.
