"keeping awake" 11 And their father Israel said to them, “If it must be so, then do this: Take some of the best fruits of the land in your vessels and carry down a present for the man—a little balm and a little honey, spices and myrrh, pistachio nuts and almonds. Making the Lampstand17 He also made the lampstand of pure gold. He made the lampstand of hammered work. Its base, its stem, its cups, its calyxes, and its flowers were of one piece with it. 18 And there were six branches going out of its sides, three branches of the lampstand out of one side of it and three branches of the lampstand out of the other side of it; 19 three cups made like almond blossoms, each with calyx and flower, on one branch, and three cups made like almond blossoms, each with calyx and flower, on the other branch—so for the six branches going out of the lampstand.20 And on the lampstand itself were four cups made like almond blossoms, with their calyxes and flowers, 21 and a calyx of one piece with it under each pair of the six branches going out of it. 22 Their calyxes and their branches were of one piece with it. The whole of it was a single piece of hammered work of pure gold. 23 And he made its seven lamps and its tongs and its trays of pure gold. 24 He made it and all its utensils out of a talent[a] of pure gold.
Some visitors think that Palestine grows the best almonds in the East. They have been found in the northern regions of Mount Lebanon and Hebron, east of the Jordan, and in Egypt. Under favorable conditions, the tree grows to 6 m. (20 ft.) in height. Note that when Aaron's rod budded, it brought forth almonds (Num. 17:8). |

Apple (Malus
domestica.) [Heb.,
tap·pu?ach]. Arabic is tuffah. To change a p to Letter f in
Hebrew there's a dot changed The word itself indicates that
which is distinguished by its fragrance, or scent. It comes from
the root na·phach?, meaning "blow; pant; struggle for breath."
(Gen 2:7; Job 31:39; Jer 15:9) Regarding this, M. C. Fisher
wrote: "Relationship [to na·phach?] seems at first semantically
strained, but the ideas of ‘breathe’ and ‘exhale an odor’ are
related. The by-form puah means both ‘blow’ (of wind) and
‘exhale a pleasant odor, be fragrant.’"-Proverbs 25:11. Different scholars identify the apple referred to in Joel 1:12 and the Song of Solomon 2:3,4; 7:8; 8:5 with apple, quince, and apricot. The Hebrew word used in these passages istappuah. Song of Solomon 2:3 - As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so [is] my beloved among the sons. I sat down under his shadow with great delight, and his fruit [was] sweet to my taste. Song of Solomon 2:5 - Stay me with flagons, comfort me with apples: for I [am] sick of love.
Song of Solomon 7:8 -
I said, I will go up to the palm tree, I will take hold of
the boughs thereof: now also thy breasts shall be as
clusters of the vine, and the smell of thy nose like apples; The ancient Romans prized the apple tree for its fruit. Scholars believe that the Romans introduced them into England. Although our apple tree grows in Palestine today, it is not certain that the Bible refers to it. Henry B. Tristram and others think that the apple tree of the Bible was actually the apricot (Prunus armeniaca), which originated in southern Asia and grows abundantly in the Holy Land. It reaches approximately 9 m. (30 ft.) with very sweet golden fruit. This tree could fit the description of the "apple" in Proverbs 25:11. Proverbs 25:11 - A word fitly spoken [is like] apples of gold in pictures of silver. |

Bdellium (Commiphora
africana) - [Heb., bedho?lach]. And the manna was as coriander seed, and the colour thereof as the colour of bdellium. Bdellium (dĕl'ē-əm) (Hebrew bedolach), also bdellion, is an aromatic gum like myrrh that is exuded from a tree. An Arab writer first made the identification with gum guggul, the species Commiphora wightii,[1] although "bdellium" has also been used to identify the African species Commiphora africanaand at least one other Indian species, C. stocksiana.[2] Bdellium was an adulterant of the more costlymyrrh (Commiphora myrrha); guggul is still used as a binder in perfumes. The word bedolach occurs only twice in the Hebrew Bible. The first is in Genesis 2:12, where it is described as a product of the land of Havilah; the context has led some readers to link bedolach with pearls or other precious stones.[3] Bdellium is mentioned once again, as something familiar, in Numbers 11:7, where manna is compared to it in color: |

Broom, Yellow (Spartium
junceum) Scotch broom is native to the Mediterranean areas of Europe. It was intentionally introduced to B.C. in 1850 by Captain Walter Grant who planted broom at his farm on Vancouver Island. Regrettably, few realized the invasiveness of this perennial as it quickly spread up the east coast of Vancouver Island before invading the Gulf Islands and mainland. Humans encouraged its continued spread as highway departments planted Scotch broom as a bank stabilizer because of its deep root structure and rapid growth. Nowadays, Scotch broom can be spotted with its brilliant yellow flowers in open areas such as roadsides, power lines, and natural meadows. This weed is a strong competitor with various native plants including those within declining Garry oak ecosystems as well as newly planted coniferous forests. It competes with native species for available light, moisture and nutrients, especially on disturbed sites. So far there are no known natural predators for this weed, therefore allowing it to spread throughout southern B.C. and other parts of North America. It does particularly well in recently disturbed areas, and for this reason it continues to increase in areas of Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland where land development is intensive. Despite these detriments, Scotch broom is quite spectacular with its striking array of bright yellow flowers in spring |

Caper, Desire (Capparis
spinosa L.) Also he spoke of trees, from the cedar tree of Lebanon even to the hyssop that springs out of the wall; he spoke also of animals, of birds, of creeping things, and of fish. Capparis spinosa, the caper bush, also called Flinders rose,[1] is a perennial winter-deciduous plant that bears rounded, fleshy leaves and large white to pinkish-white flowers. The plant is best known for the edible flower buds (capers), often used as a seasoning, and the fruit (caper berry), both of which are usually consumed pickled. Other species of Capparis are also picked along with C. spinosa for their buds or fruits. Other parts of Capparis plants are used in the manufacture of medicines and cosmetics. |

Fig (Ficus
carica L.) Figs. The fig tree was cultivated in Palestine and other Mediterranean countries (cf. Deut. 8:8). Although it is not tall, its large leaves and widely spreading branches provide excellent shade. Sitting under a fig tree was typical of peace and prosperity (I Kings 4:25; Mic. 4:4; Zech. 3:10). The Hebrew word for the fig tree was teenah, meaning "to spread out." The Greeks called this tree syke and the fruit sykon. There were two crops of figs in ancient Palestine. The early harvest appeared in June and was called the bikkore (Hos. 9:10; Isa. 28:4). The later crop ripened continually from August through March; it was called the kermouse. The fig is small and pear-shaped and often forms before the leaves appear. In biblical times, figs were eaten fresh, dried, or pressed into cakes (I Sam. 25:19; 30:12). Sometimes figs were used as a poultice (II Kings 20:7). 7 And Isaiah said, Take a lump of figs. And they took and laid it on the boil, and he recovered.Jesus used a fig tree to teach His disciples the need for spiritual fruitfulness (Matt. 24:32; Luke 13:6). |

FRUIT According to GOD's law, all fruit-bearing plants had to be three years old before their fruit could be harvested. Farmers made provision for the poor and widows by leaving some fruit for them. 23 And when ye shall come into the land, and shall have planted all manner of trees for food, then ye shall count the fruit thereof as uncircumcised: three years shall it be as uncircumcised unto you: it shall not be eaten of. 24 But in the fourth year all the fruit thereof shall be holy to praise theLord withal. 25 And in the fifth year shall ye eat of the fruit thereof, that it may yield unto you the increase thereof: I am the Lord your God. |

Grapevine (Vitis
vinifera L.) The Holy Land has rightly been called "the land of the grapes." Climate and soil conditions in Palestine are well suited for growing grapes. The Israelites found enormous clusters of grapes growing in Canaan (Num. 13:23). A single grape was reported to be as large as a plum. Since the grapes of Egypt were small, the Israelites naturally were impressed. Grapes have been the principal agricultural product of Palestine since ancient times. Besides furnishing raisins and wine, the grapes provided juice that was boiled down to the consistency of molasses; the Hebrews called this debash, or "honey". This was probably the "honey" mentioned in Genesis 43:11 and Ezekiel 27:17.

Incense (Boswellia
sacra) Frankincense, also called olibanum (Arabic: لُبَّانٌ, lubbān; Hebrew:לבונה, levonah), is an aromatic resin obtained from trees of the genus Boswellia, particularly Boswellia sacra, B. carteri, B. thurifera, B. frereana and B. bhaw-dajiana (Burseraceae). The English word is derived from Old French "franc encens" (i.e. high quality incense)[1] and is used in incense and perfumes. 13 They sacrifice on the mountaintops and burn offerings on the hills, under oak, poplar and terebinth, where the shade is pleasant. |

Judas Tree (Cercis
siliquastrum) There is a long-standing myth that Judas Iscariot hanged himself from a tree of this species. This belief is related to the common name "Judas tree", which is possibly a corrupted derivation from the French common name, Arbre de Judée, meaning tree of Judea, referring to the hilly regions of that country where the tree used to be common.[4] Another possible source for the vernacular name is the fact that the flowers and seedpods can dangle direct from the trunk in a way reminiscent of Judas' suicide.[3] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cercis_siliquastrum |

Mandrake is the common name for members of the plant genus Mandragora, particularly the species Mandragora officinarum, belonging to the nightshades family (Solanaceae). Because mandrake contains deliriant hallucinogenic tropane alkaloids such asatropine, scopolamine, apoatropine, hyoscyamine and the roots sometimes contain bifurcations causing them to resemble human figures, their roots have long been used in magic rituals, today also in contemporary pagan traditions such as Wicca and Odinism. The chestnut of the King James Version is not an indigenous tree, but the plane (Planus orientalis) is one of the finest trees in Palestine, flourishing especially by water courses (compare Ecclesiasticus 24:14). 8 The cedars in the garden of God could not hide him: the fir trees were not like his boughs, and the chestnut trees were not like his branches; nor any tree in the garden of God was like unto him in his beauty. |

Sage Jerusalem (Salvia
hierosolymitana Boiss)Holy SmokeFragrant smoke is one of these sacramentals. It has been used by peoples all over the world for thousands of years. Sweet grass, sage, cedar, etc. are forms of incense found in many First Nations cultures. It is used as a way of honouring the Creator, as a sign of prayer rising to God, and of the sweetness of prayer. It is a sign of humility (the humbleness of plants) and purity (the purifying effect of fire). Also for Christians, smoke is a reminder of the shining cloud that veils the glory of God. Vine - Grape (Vitis
vinifera) 1 Now will I sing to my wellbeloved a song of my beloved touching his vineyard. My wellbeloved hath a vineyard in a very fruitful hill: 2 And he fenced it, and gathered out the stones thereof, and planted it with the choicest vine, and built a tower in the midst of it, and also made a winepress therein: and he looked that it should bring forth grapes, and it brought forth wild grapes. 3 And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem, and men of Judah, judge, I pray you, betwixt me and my vineyard. 4 What could have been done more to my vineyard, that I have not done in it? wherefore, when I looked that it should bring forth grapes, brought it forth wild grapes? 5 And now go to; I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard: I will take away the hedge thereof, and it shall be eaten up; and break down the wall thereof, and it shall be trodden down: 6 And I will lay it waste: it shall not be pruned, nor digged; but there shall come up briers and thorns: I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it. 7 For the vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah his pleasant plant: and he looked for judgment, but behold oppression; for righteousness, but behold a cry. Let us get up early to the vineyards; let us see if the vine flourish, whether the tender grape appear, |

Wheat, Egyptian, (Triticum compositum)
Which is cultivated in ancient Egypt, & can still be encountered there, has several ears per stalk. Take thou also unto thee wheat, and barley, and beans, and lentils, and millet, and fitches, and put them in one vessel, and make thee bread thereof, according to the number of the days that thou shalt lie upon thy side, three hundred and ninety days shalt thou eat thereof. When a farmer plows for planting, does he plow continually? Does he keep on breaking up and working the soil? 25 When he has leveled the surface, does he not sow caraway and scatter cumin? Does he not plant wheat in its place, barley in its plot, and spelt in its field? Willows 22 The shady trees cover him with their shadow; the willows of the brook compass him about. For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring: 4 and they shall spring up as among the grass, as willows by the water courses. 2 We hanged our harps upon the willows in the midst thereof. |

And they filled them up to the brim. 8 And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it. 9 When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom, 10 And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now. 11 This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him. |
