8-31-04 - DREAM (after listening to a radio show
about Saturn in its rings)
I was working in an office somewhere. A man came in, wearing a
brown suit, whose head was a big ice ball. He had no eyes and his head
was all cracked, but symmetrically, in curved lines all around the
center of his face. He didn't have a whole lot to say either.
Another man came, wearing a brown suit. His head had huge craters
for eyes and had blue marks in the center of each crater which we
determined he had put there himself using ink from the desk. He had done
that on purpose to make it look like he had eyes. He rather lolled on
the desk and couldn't stand up straight either - he was a little off
kilter to be sure.
While I was looking for something, I found a stack of checks and
large envelopes that had never been processed. The checks had all been
co-signed by S.W. (an old co-worker of mine) Each check was made out to
a different person and co-signed by a different person as well. None of
these had ever been sent to the bank, and this money was owed to all
these people.
While I was looking at the checks and determining whether the
checks could still be deposited in the bank, I saw that a white parakeet
was flying loose in the office and I had to net it and put him back in
his cage to keep him safe.
The ice-ball headed man laughed at me. I noticed he was sitting in
a big metal washtub because he was starting to melt. At the same time,
for laughing at me, I reached in my pocket and found another real small
ice man. His head had come loose, so I threw his head across the room
and hit the bigger ice man in the head and both of their heads chipped
and the pieces fell into the big tub.

Two Neptune-Mass Planets Found, Earth-Size Worlds Next By Robert Roy Britt Senior Science Writer posted: 31 August 2004
Planet hunters have found two worlds roughly the mass of Neptune, each
orbiting a star within 30 light-years of our solar system. The planets are likely
gaseous or mixtures of ice and rock, but they might be barren rock worlds like Mercury.
The announcement today by a U.S. team comes just a week after a competing
European group revealed a similar discovery of a slightly less massive planet
that most likely has a rocky surface and was billed as a "super Earth."
The discoveries pushed the limit of current search technology and reveal worlds of a sort never seen outside our solar system. Together they suggest is it
just a matter of time before objects much like Earth are detected. The planets were found using a Doppler-shift method that notes a wobble in a
star caused by the gravity of the orbiting planet. No pictures are available.
The two newest discoveries were led by Geoff Marcy of the University of California, Berkeley and Paul Butler from the Carnegie Institution of Washington,
this globe's most prolific planet-hunting duo, and will be discussed in papers
to be published in the Astrophysical Journal.
Hot places
Prior to today's announcement at a NASA press conference, Marcy detailed the
pair of discoveries for www.SPACE.com
One of the planets orbits the star 55 Cancri, already known to host three gas
giant planets. Its fourth known world is 18 times as massive as Earth, just
slightly more massive than Neptune, Marcy said. It completes a year in a
mere 2.81 Earth-days, circling just 3.5 million miles (5.7 million kilometers) from
the star.
"It could be made of gas, rock and iron, or rock and ice, and there may or may not be an atmosphere," Marcy said. "We don't know."
The discovery resulted from measurements taken by Lick Observatory. Barbara
McArthur at the University of Texas helped pin it down with more observations
from the ground-based Hobby-Eberly Telescope and the Hubble Space Telescope.
The other newest known planet is about 25 times as hefty as Earth. Its
circular orbit is tight, too, a mere 2.64 Earth-days long around the star Gliese
436. Marcy speculated that this world, too, could be gaseous like Saturn or
Jupiter.
"But with a mass near that of Neptune, it could have a rock-ice core and a thick envelope of hydrogen and helium gas," he said. "Alternatively, it could be
made of only rock and iron, like Mercury." The Gliese 436 planet is probably tidally locked to the star, Marcy said,
always showing it the same face -- just as our Moon does with respect to Earth.
If rocky and barren, the lit surface would be about 710 degrees Fahrenheit (377
Celsius), and the back side far below zero. If the planet has a thick atmosphere like Venus, however, then the entire surface would be hot.
The discovery was made with the Keck Observatory in Hawaii.
Next up: Other Earths
The Doppler method was used to find the first planet beyond our solar system
in 1995. Initially it found only Jupiter-sized planets very close to stars,
because those had the greatest gravitational influence on the stars being
surveyed. The technique was later refined to spot large planets in more distant,
Jupiter-like orbits and also less massive, Saturn-sized objects.
"We had found Jupiters and Saturns, and now we've found Neptunes," Marcy
said. "The next destination is other Earths."
It is not clear just how long that breakthrough will take or who will do the
finding, however.
The "super Earth" announced last week, by a competing team based in Switzerland, is just 14 times the mass of Earth and also in a tight orbit, around a
star called mu Arae. It is almost surely rocky, experts say. The Europeans may
have an edge in finding something smaller.
The European program "should be able to push down to masses of, say, eight
Earth masses -- twice Earth-size -- for the shortest period orbits, those of
just a few days," said Alan Boss, a planet-formation theorist at the Carnegie
Institution in Washington. "There could be claims of planets with masses of about
eight Earth masses within the next year or less."
Migrating planets
All three discoveries illustrate a wide range of solar systems. The mu Arae planet found by the Europeans is bounded well to the outside by a
Jupiter-mass planet. It must have formed inside the larger planet, and theory
suggests that it would have developed as a rocky world. It might have a thin
atmosphere.
Boss does not think the two planets found by the U.S. team are made primarily
of rock. They likely formed much farther out and migrated inward to their
present orbits, Boss explained in an e-mail interview prior to the press conference.
"Hence the Gliese 436 and 55 Cancri Neptune-mass planets might actually be more like Neptune in composition as well as mass, with significant ice and gas
in addition to rock," Boss said.
All this depends on how planets form and migrate, two things astronomers know
surprisingly little about. Inward migration has also been used to explain the
dozens of "hot Jupiters," the most massive gas planets found in orbits that
last just a few days.
"Understanding planetary migration is now a major challenge for theorists,"
Boss said.
Prior to today's announcement, the 55 Cancri system was seen as one that
would, mathematically speaking, allow the presence an Earth-sized planet in a
habitable, Earth-like orbit. That possibility seems less likely now. While such a
planet could have a stable orbit, Boss said, "it is highly unlikely that it
would have survived the orbital migration of the inner planets through this
region."
The discovery of potentially habitable planets -- roughly Earth-sized and in
wider orbits -- will require a leap of technology, one that's already planned.
A pair of soon-to-launch space observatories will soon race to find planets
just like Earth in size and orbit.
NASA's Kepler observatory is slated for launch in 2007. The European Space
Agency's COROT mission will launch in 2006 under current plans. Both missions
will survey large numbers of stars and are expected to detect several rocky
planets, at least.
The newest discoveries suggest these space telescopes could find "hoards of
close-in Earth-size planets," Boss said. http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/exoplanet_pair_040831.html

The circle shows the location of the class G star 55 Cancri (in
the constellation Cancer),
also known as Rho-1 Cancri. The circle is actually centered on two
stars that are not separated at the photo's resolution. The eastern one
is 55 Cancri, the western 53 Cancri. The planet orbits 55 Cancri in only
14.6 days (16 percent that of Mercury's orbital period around the Sun),
has at least 0.84 times the mass of Jupiter, and is 0.11 astronomical
units from the star. That is only 16.5 million kilometers, 10.2 million
miles, or 28 percent Mercury's distance from the Sun.

System Summary
The 55 or Rho(1) Cancri binary
system is located about 40.9 light-years from Sol. It lies in the
northeastern part (08:52:35.8+28:19:50.9 for Star A and 08:52:40+28:19.0
for Star B, ICRS 2000.0) of Constellation Cancer,
the Crab -- east of Iota Cancri and visually adjacent to the star 53
(Rho2) Cancri, a highly evolved, red M3 II-III giant (see labelled star
chart and photo). The system is a member of the Hyades group. In
1996, astronomers announced the discovery of a Jupiter-like planet
around the wide binary's Sun-like Star A (Butler
et al, 1997 -- details below), with indications of an even larger
planet in an outer orbit. By June 2002, two -- possibly three -- giant
planets had been found (exoplanets.org;
and Marcy et al, 2002, in pdf).
On August 31, 2004, astronomers announced the discovery of a fourth,
Neptune-sized inner planet (more below -- NASA/JPL press
release and McDonald Observatory press
release). (See an animation of the planetary,

Mystery
Radio Signal Intrigues Astronomers
LONDON (Sept. 2) - An unexplained radio signal from deep space could --
just might be -- contact from an alien civilization, New Scientist
magazine reported on Thursday.
The signal, coming from a point between the Pisces and Aries
constellations, has been picked up three times by a telescope in Puerto
Rico.
New Scientist said the signal could be generated by a previously unknown
astronomical phenomenon or even be a by-product from the telescope
itself.
But the mystery beam has excited astronomers across the world.
"If they can see it four, five or six times it really begins to get
exciting," Jocelyn Bell Burnell of the University of Bath in
western England told the magazine.
It was broadcast on the main frequency at which the universe's most
common element, hydrogen, absorbs and emits energy, and which
astronomers say is the most likely means by which aliens would advertise
their presence.

A well-known planet in a distant solar system has surprised
astronomers with the presence of carbon and oxygen in its atmosphere,
elements associated with life on Earth.
A team of astronomers led by Alfred
Vidal-Madjar at the Institut
d'Astrophysique de Paris in France made the discovery using the Hubble
Space Telescope.
Nicknamed Osiris, the
extrasolar
planet
has oxygen
and carbon
in its atmosphere
that is evaporating at such an immense rate it may be placed in a new
class of space objects.
An extrasolar planet is a planet that orbits a star
other than our sun.
Finding oxygen and carbon in the atmosphere of a planet beyond our solar
system is a first.
Familiar body
Discovered in 1999, the planet, officially called HD209458b, is just
seven million kilometers from its star. This is about 100 times closer
than Jupiter
is to our sun.
The planet has had quite a history in a relatively short period. It
was the first extrasolar planet discovered circling its sun, the first
with an atmosphere and the first observed to have hydrogen
evaporating from this atmosphere.
Finding oxygen in the planet's atmosphere will likely invite
speculation that it had or still has life, but this may be a stretch.
"Naturally this sounds exciting—the possibility of life on
Osiris—but it is not a big surprise as oxygen is also present in the
giant planets of our solar system, like Jupiter and Saturn," says
Vidal-Madjar.
Atmospheric "blow off"
More important is the discovery that carbon and oxygen atoms
surround the planet in an extended envelope.
On Jupiter
or Saturn,
these elements
would be invisible as they are low in the atmosphere. On Osiris, the
fact that they are visible in the upper atmosphere confirms that
atmospheric "blow off" is occurring.
This is a process in which heavy molecules
achieve escape velocity through collision with lighter particles.
Whereas hydrogen is a very light element, oxygen and carbon are much
heavier.
Scientists theorize that ultraviolet
radiation
streaming from the planet's sun is ripping away its mostly hydrogen
atmosphere and pulling off carbon and oxygen in the process.
"We speculate that even heavier elements such as iron are blown
off at this stage as well," says researcher Alain
Lecavelier des Etangs.
Chthonian giants
The evaporation process is so distinctive that such extrasolar
objects should be placed in a new category, the researchers suggest.
This category would contain evaporated gas giants. They would be
called Chthonian giants after the Greek god of the underworld, Khton.
Chthonian planets are thought to be the skeletons of evaporated gas
giants orbiting as close or closer to their parent star as Osiris.
Atmospheric blow off may also occur on smaller bodies, as some
propose that the early atmospheres of Venus, Earth and Mars were ripped
away by our young sun.
"It has been speculated that Venus, Earth and Mars may have lost
their entire original atmospheres during the early part of their
lives," says Vidal-Madjar. "Their present atmospheres have
their origins in asteroid and cometary impacts and outgassing from the
planet interiors."
The research is reported in Astrophysical
Journal Letters.

Space signal studied for alien contact
Thursday, September 2, 2004 Posted: 9:52 AM EDT (1352 GMT)
LONDON, England (Reuters) -- An unexplained

MYSTERIOUS SIGNALS FROM 1,000 LIGHT YEARS AWAY / COULD IT FINALLY BE
'ET' TRYING TO PHONE EARTH?! / OR IS IT A CLEAR CASE OF SOMEONE HACKING
INTO SETI's COMPUTER SYSTEM? PERHAPS MANKIND IS ALONE IN THE UNIVERSE!
– By Eugenie Samuel Reich , New Scientist,
Thursday, September 2, 2004
In February 2003, astronomers involved in the search for
extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) pointed the massive radio telescope
in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, at around 200 sections of the sky.
The same telescope had previously detected unexplained radio signals at
least twice from each of these regions, and the astronomers were trying
to reconfirm the findings. The team has now finished analysing the data,
and all the signals seem to have disappeared. Except one, which has got
stronger.
This radio signal, now seen on three separate occasions, is an enigma.
It could be generated by a previously unknown astronomical phenomenon.
Or it could be something much more mundane, maybe an artifact of the
telescope itself. But it also happens to be the best candidate yet for a
contact by intelligent aliens in the nearly six-year history of the
SETI@home project, which uses programs running as screensavers on
millions of personal computers worldwide to sift through signals picked
up by the Arecibo telescope.
ABSORB AND EMIT
"It's the most interesting signal from SETI@home," says Dan
Werthimer, a radio astronomer at the University of California, Berkeley
(UCB) and the chief scientist for SETI@home. "We're not jumping up
and down, but we
are continuing to observe it."
Named SHGb02+14a, the signal has a frequency of about 1420 megahertz.
This happens to be one of the main frequencies at which hydrogen, the
most common element in the universe, readily absorbs and emits energy.
Some astronomers have argued that extraterrestrials trying to advertise
their presence would be likely to transmit at this frequency, and SETI
researchers conventionally scan this part of the radio spectrum.
SHGb02+14a seems to be coming from a point between the constellations
Pisces and Aries, where there is no obvious star or planetary system
within 1000 light years. And the transmission is very weak.
"We are looking for something that screams out 'artificial',"
says UCB researcher Eric Korpela, who completed the analysis of the
signal in April. "This just doesn't do that, but it could be
because it is distant."
UNKNOWN FUTURE
The telescope has only observed the signal for about a minute in total,
which is not long enough for astronomers to analyse it thoroughly. But,
Korpela thinks it unlikely SHGb02+14a is the result of any obvious radio
interference or noise, and it does not bear the signature of any known
astronomical object.
That does not mean that only aliens could have produced it. "It may
be a natural phenomenon of a previously undreamed-of kind like I
stumbled over," says Jocelyn Bell Burnell of the University of
Bath, UK. It was Bell Burnell who in 1967 noticed a pulsed radio signal
which the research team at the time thought was from extraterrestrials
but which turned out to be the first ever sighting of a pulsar.
There are other oddities. For instance, the signal's frequency is
drifting by between eight to 37 hertz per second. "The signal is
moving rapidly in frequency and you would expect that to happen if you
are looking at a transmitter on a planet that's rotating very rapidly
and where the civilisation is not correcting the transmission for the
motion of the planet," Korpela says.
This does not, however, convince Paul Horowitz, a Harvard University
astronomer who looks for alien signals using optical telescopes. He
points out that the SETI@home software corrects for any drift in
frequency.
FISHY AND PUZZLING
The fact that the signal continues to drift after this correction is
"fishy," he says. "If [the aliens] are so smart, they'll
adjust their signal for their planet's motion."
The relatively rapid drift of the signal is also puzzling for other
reasons. A planet would have to be rotating nearly 40 times faster than
Earth to have produced the observed drift; a transmitter on Earth would
produce a signal with a drift of about 1.5 hertz per second.
What is more, if telescopes are observing a signal that is drifting in
frequency, then each time they look for it they should most likely
encounter it at a slightly different frequency. But in the case of
SHGb02+14a, every observation has first been made at 1420 megahertz,
before it starts drifting. "It just boggles my mind," Korpela
says.
The signal could be an artifact that, for some reason, always appears to
be coming from the same point in the sky. The Arecibo telescope has a
fixed dish reflector and scans the skies by changing the position of its
receiver relative to the dish. When the receiver reaches a certain
position, it might just be able to reflect waves from the ground onto
the dish and then back to itself, making it seem as if the signal was
coming from space.
"Perhaps there is an object on the ground near the telescope
emitting at about this frequency," Korpela says. This could be
confirmed by using a different telescope to listen for SHGb02+14a.
POSSIBLE FRAUD
There is also the possibility of fraud by someone hacking the SETI@home
software to make it return evidence for an extraterrestrial
transmission.
However, SHGb02+14a was seen on two different occasions by different
SETI@home users, and those calculations were confirmed by others. Then
the signal was seen a third time by the SETI@home researchers. The
unusual characteristics of the signal also make it unlikely that someone
is playing a prank, Korpela says. "As I can't think of any way to
make a signal like this, I can't think of any way to fake it."
David Anderson, director of SETI@home, remains sceptical but curious
about the signal. "It's unlikely to be real but we will definitely
be re-observing it." Bell Burnell agrees that it is worth
persisting with. "If they can see it four, five or six times it
really begins to get exciting," she says. It is already exciting
for IT engineers Oliver Voelker of Logpoint in Nuremberg, Germany and
Nate Collins of Farin and Associates in Madison, Wisconsin, who found
the signal.
Collins wonders how his bosses will react to company computers finding
aliens. "I might have to explain a little further about just how
much I was using [the computers]," he says.

Astronomers deny ET signal report

The giant Arecibo telescope is used to scan the skies
|
Astronomers have moved swiftly to quell speculation they may
have received a deep-space radio signal from ET.
It was reported on the internet that the signal had been found
using the Seti@home screensaver that uses computer downtime to
analyse sky data from telescopes.
But researchers connected with the project told BBC News Online
on Thursday that no contact with extraterrestrials had been made.
"It's all hype and noise," said its chief scientist,
Dr Dan Wertheimer. "We have nothing that is unusual. It's all
out of proportion."
And Dr Paul Horowitz, of Harvard University, who specialises in
hunting for possible alien contacts added: "It's not much of
anything at all. We're not investigating it further."
Not a signal
For six years, the Seti@home project has used a downloadable
screensaver on millions of computers around the world to sift
through data for anything unusual.
The data has been collected by radio telescopes scanning the
sky for any unusual signals from space.
It is believed that any extraterrestrial intelligence might want
to send radio messages across the cosmos to make contact with
other intelligences.
Over the years, Seti@home has detected many hundreds of
thousands of spurious signals and has used statistical techniques
to identify them as interference.
About 150 signals survived the process and were subjected to
further scrutiny but none passed the final test to be classed as a
potential signal from ET.
Large numbers
The "signal" that kicked off furious media excitement
on Thursday is called SHGb02+14a and was first detected by
computers running Seti@home software in Germany and the US.
It has a frequency of 1420 megahertz - one of the principal
frequencies of the most abundant element hydrogen.
Speaking to BBC News Online from the Arecibo radio telescope in
Puerto Rico, where he is preparing an observing run to follow up
Seti@home analysis, Dr Wertheimer said: "It's all hype. We
don't have anything we are excited about.
"At the moment, we have no candidates that we are
particularly excited about and the new 'signal' is not a
priority."
He continued: "With Seti@home having analysed some 50
trillion frequency bands, it is not surprising that a signal like
this occurs purely due to chance."
Dr Horowitz, who looks for alien signals using optical
telescopes, told BBC News Online that it was "not new and
definitely not a signal".
