On 25 June 2004, a crop circle formation was reported to have appeared at Milk Hill, Wiltshire. It looked somewhat like a bee and beehive. I have turned the photograph below upside down to illustrate the hive-like mound:

Introduction

Those familiar with my writings know that I often tell of my "dream-coincidence" experiences. The various symbolic subjects often appear later as crop circle formations in some manner. The Bee-Hive formation is another example. Two significant dreams of other people are at the heart of this article.

The Bee and Honey Dreams

Melissa's Dream

In 1993, when I was writing an essay titled, "Humanity On The Pollen Path," my son T.J.'s wife, Melissa, had this dream. -

T.J. (Thomas Joseph, my son, her husband) and I visited a house in Modesto. Strangely, my father was there, working on a motorcycle. He asked T.J. to help.

After a while, I got bored. The lady of the house suggested I take my dog, Honey, out to the back yard and play with her. I was in the back yard for a long time, and complained that I wanted to go home.

Everybody came out and told me that I would just have to wait until the motorcycle was repaired. More time went by and it got dark. This went on for three days and nights, and I was getting dirty, hungry, and thirsty.

After the third night, I saw a break in the fence to the neighbor's back yard. A mean-looking dog was looking at me. I took Honey in my arms, and went through the opening in the fence, then opened a garage door that faced the back yard. The front garage door was locked, but I got it unlocked, and escaped.

I went down the street and came to a street light. Strangely, I had on new, clean clothes, a white and violet cotten dress. I went to another friend's house and called my mother. She said she just wanted me to come home, and have things as they once were.

Just before telling me this dream, my son, T.J., told me that they just found out that Melissa was pregnant. To me, this seemed connected to my study of Revelation, specifically to Revelation 12, where the Woman With Child, comes down with twelve stars as a crown. She is taken to a place to be nourished for 1260 days, or "a time, two times, and half a time." (Rev. 11:3, 12:6 and Rev. 12:14, Daniel 12:7 have these forms)

This is the same 3 and 1/2 symbolism found in myths worldwide, and in other forms in the Bible. In Rev. 11:2 and 13.5 it is 42 months; in Rev. 11:9 and 11:11 it is 3 and 1/2 days; in Luke 4;25 and James 5:17 it is three years six months; and in Daniel 9:27 it is half of a week.

My essay was based on the Navaho Sand Painting called, "The Pollen Path," which is one of the examples given by Joseph Campbell as relating to the midpoint of seven, as three and a half. This indicates the seven chakra levels of consciousness with the the midpoint or fourth point as significant. This is the Heart chakra level. The thesis of my essay is that humanity is near the three and a half point, and the leap to the Heart Chakra level, en mass.

I believe the Woman with Child is related to Mother Goddess figures in many mythologies, such as Isis, Ishtar, Sakti, Sophia, Shekinah, etc. In the Christian tradition, it would be the Virgin Mary. The Heart Chakra is symbolized by a twelve-petaled lotus flower, with a Star Of David inside. The New Jerusalem has 12 gates, pearls, and angels.

The Goddess figure is sometimes related as having daughters. The Bible has this as the daughters of the harlot. In the Babylonian myths, Ishtar is said to be the mother of all the harlots in Babylon. Isaiah 4:4 says,

". . . when the Lord shall have washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion and cleansed the bloodstains of Jerusalem from its midst by a spirit of judgment and by a spirit of burning."

The idea I have is that the Mother Goddess figure in the New Age is related to the Holy Spirit, and that Her Daughters will be the the Holy Spirit aspect within each individual. You might say this is the "repair" of the Motorcycle.

I had developed a theory that a bicycle or motorcycle was a dream symbol of the duality, as two wheels moving in tandem. The Great Change seems to clearly involve a duality balancing of the female and male attributes within us human beings.

I discovered later that "Melissa" means "bee" and "honey," or "honeybee" in the Greek language.

Jeff's Dream

In 1995, Jeff, from my work place, reported this dream:

I went into a grocery store during a rainstorm. The lights were out. I walked through the store and went to the bathroom. The lights were on in the room. I saw our plant manager, Bob Behee, and his supervisor. Something happened that I cannot remember. I went back into the store and the lights were now on. I took an item from a shelf and took it to the counter. I paid for it by signing a block of caramel wrapped in cellophane.

Then the scene changed and I was riding in a car with a woman dressed in red. She was broadcasting a radio talk show which was also coming over the car radio. After a bit, I told her that I didn't like such talk programs. I suggested that she change to a rock 'n roll station. The woman announced over the air that she was changing stations.

The radio broadcast seemed to suggest a vibratory communication, or perhaps the vibrations of cycles of time and consciousness change. The caramel in Jeff's dream was used like a "payment" for the item taken from the shelf. This seems symbolic of karma, as with various forms of payment, such as money or credit cards. The woman in red, I would think, represents Kali, who corresponds to the harlot of Revelation 17. She is one of many aspects of the Mother Goddess, Sakti. With each cycle change, there is apparently a change in the feminine aspect. Jeff's dream seems to give hints about the change from the Kali/harlot stage of spiritual evolution to the age of the Holy Spirit.

Later, I discovered something else about this dream. Caramel comes from the name "canamela," meaning "cane honey." Cellophane is so-named because it has many little "cells," perhaps relating symbolically to honeycomb cells.

Behee is suggestive of bees or bee hives. A person at work informed me that Bob Behee has a sign in front of his house with the words, "The Hive" printed on it.

I asked Bob about the sign. He said that the sign was originally on the property of friends in the town of Carmel. "Coincidentally," that is my home town and it looks somewhat like the word "caramel." Bob's secretary was Debbie, who replaced the one called, Deborah. Deborah is Hebrew word for "Bee." Deborah in the Bible was a prophetess and judge in Israel.

I remembered a recent dream of my own, where my nephew, John, demonstrated to a group of people how to "do it." He broke open a beehive that was hanging from a tree with a stick. As the honey gushed out, he leaned forward, stuck out his tongue, and drank a mouthful.

Honey Bees and the Royal Bloodline

Around 1988 I read the very interesting book, Holy Blood, Holy Grail, mentions the bee symbol. Investigations led to the discovery that Jesus was probably married and had children. Some evidence shows that the descendants of Jesus later married into the family of the early French Kings. They took the symbol of the bee. Golden bees were found in one of their graves. Napoleon took the symbol of the bee for this reason.

I read some writings of early Christians that may be related. The words of the Biblical Deborah were like honey, meaning they came from the Holy Spirit. John The Baptist ate raw honey that was formed like a pancake. (not locusts, as other translators claimed) This honey-pancake was like manna. This refers back to the manna that the tribe of Israel ate on their 40 year wandering with Moses. Moisture provided by God fell on the ground at night, and turned to flakes in the morning. The people gathered it and made it into the manna. To me, this seems like a good metaphor to indicate dreams. The wandering tribe is like mankind in the cycle of time.

Apollo's son, Aristaeus, was a keeper of bees. One time all his bees died from an unknown cause. He was advised by his mother to seek out Proteus, the wise old god of the sea. The god could tell him how to prevent another such disaster, but would do so only if compelled. This was difficult, because the god had the power to change himself into any number of different forms.

Aristaeus went to the island and seized Proteus, holding him tightly as he changed into terrifying forms. Finally, the old god told him to sacrifice to the gods and leave the carcasses of the animals in the place of sacrifice. He was then to return nine days later and examine the bodies.

Aristaius followed the instructions, and found that a swarm of bees was in one of the carcasses. He was never troubled again by any blight or disease among his bees.

One guess I have about this, is that the struggle with Proteus represents our challenge of trying to find truth and meaning in the unconscious/dream realm.

Bees are said to be guided by the sun. They seek flowers to obtain the nectar. Given the symbolic meanings of "sun" and "flowers," suggest more meanings.

The Omphalos Connections

Note the similarity between the Bee-Hive crop circle formation and this rendering of Tarot Card 15, The Tower:

XV. Turris - Purgos - Tower (15, 16)

The image is described as a beehive-shaped mound. The tall ziggurat atop the beehive mound has seven terraces with lights that correspond to the seven colors of the spectrum, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. As pointed out concerning the 2001 Mega Glyph formation, also at Milk Hill, with its 409 circles, these colors correspond to the chakra levels:

Winged Disk God Theory

Others have pointed out that the a portion of the Bee-Hive formation is similar to ancient symbols of the Winged Disk God. In this sense, the formation could indicate God below the hive-like or Omphalos-like mound, with its possible chakra implications.

The picture on the right is a photograph of a crop circle formation that was reported 14 June 1997 at Upham, Hampshire. Note it's similarity to the shape below the wings in the ancient Sumarian glyph on the left. The crop formation was called by some, the "Jelly Baby."

July 26, 2004 Update

Was playing around with the idea of the Bee/Winged-Solar-Disk crop formation as a symbol of the balance of masculine/feminine principles. The synchronicity of the numbers proved interesting, beginning with the hexagon shape of the honeycomb. Notice the various male/female synchs.

(Some believe that Mary Magdalene was carrying on the tradition of Isis, or that she was indeed the new Isis)

The number 151 has turned out to be a significant number although I have yet to understand what that number might mean, in and of itself. Nevertheless, here is just a partial list of the correlating phrases with the value of 151 (those familiar with the mystery of Rennes le Chateau in the South of France will recognize the Jesus/Magdalene connection).

Continuing with the Bee related numbers . . . A hexagram is a six-sided geometric shape.

SIX SIDES = 108 = GEOMETRY = THE DIVINE BEE

Although it's a 6-sided shape, the following is curious:

HEXAGONAL = 87 = TWELVE

The 12, of course, could relate back to THE TWELVE BEES (see above).

Speaking of 12 bees, I was reminded of the 12 disciples of Jesus:

THE TWELVE DISCIPLES = 216 = 108 x 2 (GEOMETRY=108=THE DIVINE BEE)

216/12 = 18

The number 18 is described in David Wood's book, Genisis, as "The function of Isis and one of the keys to the mysteries. It is this number which appears to rationalise numerical descriptions in esoteric texts". In our case, here, it's interesting that the number 216, related to the twelve male disciples, would yield the number attributed to the Egyptian goddess Isis in the ancient tradition. But again, using our English based gematria, we find support for the same idea:

EIGHTEEN = 73 = NUMBER = GODDESS = EGYPT

Here's something I've always found intriguing. The word ENLIGHTENMENT is the only word in the English language in which the word EIGHTEEN appears with all the letters in the right order:

As some of you know, I'm particularly interested in gematrian numbers that reduce to the single digit value of 9. The numbers we've already seen here (261 and 18 and 108) are examples. The following phrases are in that catagory and are related to the theme of this discussion:

THE BEES ARE THE KEY = 162 = 9
JESUS CHRIST + MARY MAGDALENE = 270 = 9
JESUS CHRIST + ISIS = 207 = 9
270 - 207 = 63 = DIVINE = ELEVEN
JESUS = 74 = QUEEN BEE (7+4=11)
ISIS = 56 = LIGHT (5+6=11)
THE DIVINE MASCULINE FEMININE BALANCE = 306 = 9

A balance implies two equal sides. Divide the 306 in half:

306/2 = 153, a profoundly important number in New Testament gematria.

The geometric shapes of the hexagon, the pentagon, etc. are based on the system of a circle of 360 degrees.

THREE SIXTY = 153 = SECRET WISDOM

153, as you may know, is a number with a strong connection to the Jesus story and to Christianity in general. The Bible verse, John 21:11, tells of the disciples catching 153 fish after Jesus told them where to cast the net. Early Christians used the sign of the fish to symbolize Jesus the Christ.

The sign of the fish is the Vesica Piscis, the shape formed from the conjoining of two circles of equal size so that the circumference of each passes through the center of the other. This certainly could, in my opinion, symbolize the union of the masculine and the feminine. The resulting fish shape in the center could symbolize a gateway to the secret wisdom mentioned above. In other words, when the masculine and the feminine are conjoined equally in this manner, it opens a gate to enlightened wisdom. To that effect, we have these supportive numerical correspondences:

THE FISH GATE = 108 = GEOMETRY
THE GEOMETRY OF THE FISH GATE = 270 = JESUS CHRIST + MARY MAGDALENE

("Jesus Christ+Mary Magdalene" could symbolize the masculine and the feminine aspects of each respective circle brought together to form the Vesica Piscis, the Gate.)

THE VESICA PISCIS IS THE GATE = 261 = 9

THE VESICA PISCIS IS THE GATE TO THE SECRET WISDOM OF GOD = 513 = 9

This phrase makes sense relative to Drunvelo Melchizedek's teaching about the Vesica Piscis eminating from the first day of Genesis (according to an interpretation of the geometric progression of the "Flower of Life" geometry). The Vesica Piscis is considered as symbolic of the beginning of all creation and containing all the information of the universe. The shape of the Vesica Piscis has also been compared, symbolically, to the female vagina (VAGINA=54=9). This, again, relates to the idea of a "gate", and the idea of a birth, a new creation.

THREE SIXTY = 153

Combine the two:

360 + 153 = 513 = THE VESICA PISCIS IS THE GATE TO THE SECRET WISDOM OF GOD

Turn that beehive upright and you will see the wheels within wheels of your chakras spiraling upwards. The wings are the axiatonal projections from the crown chakra for the bodily antennae. NOW opened to receive the incoming higher energies intended to thread the new DNA strands into matter.

Interesting that the LDS have a primary class for young children called Beehive.

Each beehive is filled with cells for the individual nurturing of its genesis.

Would also be a great storage container for space flight. <o>?<O>

I have been looking at the formation turned up or down. I turned it up for the article, to show the beehive like shape. Turned the other way around, it could be considered like a container, like the Grail Cup or the like.

The circle with wings and it's associated circular shapes could be similar the male potency which penetrates the feminine cup. This would fit well with the Tower Tarot card, which I mentioned in the article.

The other connection to that view is the "Shiva linga" as Omphalos. I will be adding a few of these ideas to the article, including those you contributed.

I also plan to add the Mormon connections. It is actually extensive.

What ties all this together is, of all people, is Asenath, the Queen of the Deseret hive.

Then and now, as the mother of Ephraim and Manasseh by Joseph, whom she married in a swarm of bees, bringing her honey and uncovering her person to do her reference.

She is the servant of the Goddess Neith (THE Bee-Mother!). Robert Graves in his epic "The Greek Myths", 2 vols., notes that Plato identified Athene with Neith. (vol.

1, p. 44). Interestingly, Graves also notes that Phanes is a loudly-buzzing celestial bee, and the beehive was studied as an ideal republic, while in the golden age, honey dropped from the trees. In fact, Rhea's drum was beaten to prevent the bees from swarming in the wrong place. (vol.1, p.

31) The temple at Delphi we are told was made from bees' wax and refers to the goddess as Bee. (p. 181).

Why has the bee been brought back into our consciousness in the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ? Well repeated echoes from the remote past keep reminding us that the office and calling of the bee was to bring about the stirrings of life, reviving the biological cycle in a world that has been totally ravaged by the cosmic forces of destruction. Is, then, Deseret waiting in the wings, held in reserve against the day, soon to come, when its salutary services will be once again required?

From the first, the bee symbol captivated the imagination of the LDS in their migrations and settlements. The emblematic hive became the seal of the Territory and State and adorned every importance edifice within the vast expanse of "our lovely Deseret".

Finally by what strange coincidence does the "History of the Church" end with the sign of the bee? After the martyrdom of Joseph and Hyrum Smith, "The bodies... were removed.... at Emma's request, to near the Mansion House, and buried side by side, and the bee house was then moved and placed over their graves. (H. Nibley - "Abraham in Egypt", pp. 243ff)

The breathtaking and staggering amounts of correlations with history, the Book of Mormon and the Pearl of Great Price are nowhere surpassed than with this splendid thing.... Deseret, the honeybee. How on living earth could Smith have put it all together so well? Not only is bee mentioned ONLY in the correct place it could have been in the BofM, the Jaredites, i.e., back in ancient times, but having it in the BofA, with all the historical correlations with that text as well as the facsimiles is utterly mindboggling! Who has ever performed such sheer daring and incredible accurate restoration of history, myth, ritual, religion, and apocalyptic? The bee is in the only place it could be in the scriptures. With the migrations. With the ancient peoples. It is associated with the only people that Smith could have gotten away with. He gets this correct as well. Where is there error? Here is pure history in all its grandeur.

Here is real restoration of ancient concepts long ago forgotten but resurrected to our consciousness with an eloquence and greatness that is only now being discovered. It is an incredible testimony that any of this fits. It is staggering that it all fits.

61.A symbol's "meaning" is perpetually open to interpretation, but in this particular case there is strong historical precedent for assuming a deeper allegorical text. This exact metaphor of the honey bee as the alchemist and the hive as the alchemical retort is presented on the title page of Michael Maier's Examen fucorum (Frankfurt:

Nicholas Hoffman for Theodor de Bry, 1617), facsimile in Klossowski de Rola, The Golden Game, 65. (See Fig. 5.) The bee and beehive seems to have entered the symbolic vocabulary of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries through a rediscovered and influential work of the third century Neoplatonist Porphyry, De Antro Nympharum (On the Cave of the Nymphs). In this short essay, Porphyry examined several verses from the thirteenth book of Homer's Odyssey and showed how they were to be interpreted as an allegory of the immortal soul's passage through mortality and on to liberation. The bees and hive are among the objects encountered in this "cave of generation." As Kathleen Raine notes in her introduction to Thomas Taylor's translation of the work, "Porphyry's interests in symbols and myths is central--in what Henry Corbin has called the mundus imaginalis, the imaginal world where sensible images are informed with meaning, and where higher worlds may be discerned under symbolic forms. . . . With the revival of Neoplatonic learning in Renaissance Florence, De Antro Nympharum spoke immediately to the imaginative genius of those gifted painters whose works communicated the profoundest philosophic realizations in the lightest vestures" ("Introduction" in, Porphyry, On the Cave of the Nymphs [Grand Rapids: Phanes Press, 1991], 10, 13.) It is this same intent to convey an understanding of "higher worlds" through symbolic forms that subsequently animated the seventeenth-century genre of "hieroglyphic" alchemical emblems; and it is only natural that they would pay homage by echoing imagery from De Antro Nypharum.

Porphyry associated Homer's Cave of the Nymphs with the cave-temples of an ancient mystery religion and gave a long discussion to the symbolic, allegorical meanings of the bees and honey combs found there. The web and beehive were subsequently linked together in emblems identifying the royal patron of the Rosicrucian enlightenment, Fredrick V, Elector Palatine and King of Bohemia (this linkage helps identify their joint origin in Porphyry, a fact I have not seen elsewhere noted).

Fredrick's reign became the focal point of reformative aspirations, and under his patronage in Oppenheim several of the most influential emblematic "Rosicrucian"

books were published. These included works published by the de Bry firm and several authored by Michael Maier (Examen fucorum, noted above, is an example--on the title page Maier identifies himself "Count Palatine, Free Knight of the Empire, Doctor of Medicine"). The Rose Cross, spider's web, and beehive are again linked on the title page of Robert Fludd's and Joachim Frizius's collaboration, Summum bonum, The True Magic, Cabla, and Alchemy of the True Fraternity of the Rose Cross (Frankfurt, 1629)

(Yates, The Rosicrucian Enlightenment, 72, 102). The symbol of the beehive subsequently entered into Freemasonry as one of the ten emblems (including the "All- seeing Eye") given to a Master Mason at the time of his ceremonial initiation; in Masonry it was associated with the motto "industry" (Jabez Richardson, Richardson's Monitor of Free-Masonry [facsimile reprint, Chicago: Charles T. Powner, Co., n.d.],

40). Nearly every priesthood leader of Joseph Smith's church present in Nauvoo was "given" these two symbolic emblems when entered as Master Masons (see discussion below). In a bizarre historical twist, after the failure of the reign of Fredrick V, the next political kingdom to which this symbol would be widely linked was Brigham Young's Kingdom of Deseret. The beehive and the motto "Industry" remain today the emblem and motto of its successor, the State of Utah.
