THE HENRY ANCESTORS

There are some mysteries in our family. Granny Zora told the family that we were descended from the famous Patrick Henry.
We set out to prove this story as fact, and we found through DNA testing that the rumourwasn't factual.  Perhaps granny meant that we
were related to Patrick Henry, rather than descended from him.  It's easy to track Patrick Henry's descendants since he is
rather famous.  It was more difficult to track the ancestors of granny Zora, but with the help of ancestry.com and other
family members who have worked at gathering information, we have quite a lot of facts, which we've been able to
prove by looking at the various available census pages, and tracking family members ourselves.

We've provided family photographs to help prove that we were related to certain people. Some mysteries remain and we are
still attempting to gather facts about certain people.  An example of this is Claire Curry, one of granny Zora's daughters.
We are told that Claire once placed in the Miss Kansas City beauty pageant. We recently verified that she
went to New York city, and became a member of the Earl Carroll Vanities show. That fact is verified with newspaper
articles and that is where another of granny Zora's daughters met and married the piano player there and they
together created our family as it is today. Other verification of certain information about Claire is missing - i.e.
her date of death, and how she died. Rumour is that maybe she committed suicide there because of a
bad romance, or maybe she got married and changed her name.  We haven't been able to find and prove
her date of death. Another interesting family story remains a mystery. The husband of one of granny Zora's
daughters was called "Chief Jimmy" because he said he was related to the Chief of the Cherokee indians who
sold the Indian land which created the tragedy of the Trail of Tears.  We haven't verified that piece
of informaton yet either - if it is verifiable. Since Chief Jimmy was a bootlegger and quite a character,
maybe it is just a 'story' and not truth. We are still looking to find that piece of information.

Gloucestershire, England: Parish and Probate Records

---------------------------

Description:

This database is a collection of historical parish and probate registers from the county of Gloucestershire in the Country of England. The 316,300 records in this collection can range in date from the early 1500s to the mid- to late-1800s. Some non-parish records may be included from as early as the twelfth century. Parish records--primarily baptisms, marriages, and burials--provide the best source of vital record information in the centuries before civil registration. The records include baptisms/christenings, burials, marriages, tombstone inscriptions, obituaries, tax lists, wills, and other miscellaneous types of records. Also included are some records from non-conformist churches. All of the data was converted as it was originally presented in various published registers and books. For this reason, you will find interesting phonetic spellings and large descriptive tables of contents.

What should I know about this collection to access the data?

Some of the records may be in Latin or even a Welsh or Scottish dialect depending on location. The spelling is archaic, and is transcribed as it was written. There are many spelling inconsistencies and non-standard grammar. Phonetic spelling is often used. Try using variant spellings if a search yields no results.

The individual files in this database may not include all dates and records for each parish/church. Use caution in assuming that any database is a complete set of records--even for the parishes and time period listed. Due to the legibility of the original sources, there may be gaps in the records, including partial sentences, cut-off words, and other omissions.

Due to the nature of the records and because the records were originally compiled by a third party, it is difficult to absolutely verify the completeness and validity of the data. The information in this collection is as correct as it was when Ancestry.com received it, and has merely been reproduced in an electronic format.

A large number of parish records date from the sixteenth century, when a series of mandates required clergy to compile records of baptisms, marriages, and burials within the parish, and to send an annual copy to the Bishop. Essentially, there are two sets of records: the parish copy and the copy the clergyman sent to the Bishop each year, known as Bishops Transcripts. Many records were destroyed, lost, or simply not kept during the Civil War (1642-1660). Of the surviving records, many have since been transcribed and collected by genealogical societies. The records are a valuable resource for finding vital information of people of the time. The content of the records may vary between the two sets.

Civil registration of births, deaths, and marriage, often called General Registration, began in July of 1837. It provides a national vital records index that simplifies searches and includes people who may not have been associated with a church. The civil records are more readily available than parish records (parish records after 1837 often aren't filmed) and are easier to use. But many births went unrecorded in the early years of civil registration, so parish records are still extremely valuable.

These records are a finding aid that help researchers locate an ancestor in a particular time and place in history. With a location and an approximate date, the microfilm number of pertinent corroborating records can often be found on the LDS Church's FamilySearch site (www.familysearch.org) in the Family History Library Catalog. The Family History Library in Salt Lake City has the largest collection.

For unfilmed original parish records go to The Phillimore Atlas and Index of Parish Registers, under the county of interest. This will then direct you the County Record Office where the registers are housed. You can also contact local genealogy societies or local parishes for information on viewing original records. See Crockford's Clerical Directory, a directory of Church of England clergy, if you wish to write to a parish. It is published annually.

This is possibly Jane Crossun's father

John Crosan was born abt. 1749 Old Swedes, Wilmington Deleware and married 12 Oct. 1782 in New Castle Deleware

OR, it could have been John Crossan from Bedford, PA, who was on the Revolutionary Pension list. Further checking on other sites, make this possibility less likely.

The early census takers didn't spell very well, and we found Crossan, Crossen, Crossun, Crossin, Crosan,  an others like Kroesen.which is probably the German spelling. All these spelling changes makes it very difficult to find ancestors.

There seems to be a discrepancy in the information about theCharming Molly according to this newspaper article:

March 30, 1774
The Pennsylvania Gazette

PHILADELPHIA, MARCH 30. […]

Thursday last arrived at New York the Schooner Hannah, Captain Gray, in 13 Days from North Carolina, with whom were Passengers Captain Tree, of this Place, Robert and James Armstrong, and some others: The two latter informed, - That they sailed from Baltimore the 23d of February, in the Snow Charming Molly, Captain Waugh, bound for Belfast, in Company with Capt. Keith, in a Ship for the Streights; - that they left the Capes on Wednesday, the 2d Instant, and the same Night, in a Gale of wind, their Vessel sprung a Leak, which obliged Captain Waugh to bear away for North Carolina; where, upon his Arrival, he was informed that a Ship, with an Image Head, and carved Images on her Quarters, loaded with Flour, some of   the Casks marked Baltimore, was cast away to the southward of Ocracock, the Vessel lost, and almost all the Cargoe, and the whole Crew drowned, one of the Men having been found on the Shore, with a blue Jacket, and black Hair; the Ship had a new Mainmast, and was supposed to be Captain Keith, as two Dogs came ashore on the Forecastle, and the Informants were certain he had such with him, as they  frequently saw them on board his Vessel.

Captain Shines, who arrived here last Monday from North Carolina, confirms the above, and adds, that the Schooner -- ------, Captain King, in Ballast, from Antigua for this Port, was drove into Ocracock, and lost, the People saved; and that the Schooner -----, Captain Greenway, from this Port for Newbern, was drove  ashore, and the Vessel and Cargoe lost.
