Quakes Jolt Northeastern Japan, Hundreds Hurt
Sat Jul 26, 8:57 AM ET
By Issei Kato
NANGOCHO, Japan (Reuters) - A series of strong earthquakes (news - web sites) hit northeastern Japan on Saturday, injuring more than 420 people, causing landslides and power blackouts and causing some 2,500 people to evacuate, officials and media said.

But there were no deaths reported in the earthquakes, which were centered in Miyagi prefecture, about 190 miles north of Tokyo.

The first temblor, measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale, hit shortly after midnight. It was followed by a second measuring 6.2 about seven hours later. Aftershocks rattled the area, including one on Saturday afternoon with a magnitude of 5.4.

NHK public television said 421 people had been injured and about 2,500 evacuated. Most of the injuries were not serious.

"We hope that the earthquakes are settling down, but we are worried about further damage because of the heavy rain," Yoshitada Konoike, cabinet minister for disaster management, told a news conference in Tokyo.

The quake affected a wide swathe of northeast Japan, a mostly rural area with a few large cities and some high-tech firms.

Two people buried in a landslide were rescued, but officials said the heavy rains posed the danger of more landslides.

About 130,000 homes temporarily lost electric power. Train services in the area were halted and some highways were closed. By evening, about 12,000 homes were still without water.

Army personnel were dispatched to the region to help out.

There were no reports of damage at the Onagawa nuclear power plant in Miyagi or at nuclear plants in nearby Fukushima prefecture, also shaken by the quake.

"We were eating breakfast when it hit and tried to hide under the table," said Ryuichi Matsuoka, 39, who was evacuated along with six family members to a school gym in the town of Nangocho.

"We got worried, so we came here," Matsuoka said. About 530 people were evacuated to the gym and another spot in the town.

Television footage showed collapsed wooden houses amid scattered ceramic roof tiles in several towns and villages.

Concrete walls around the yards of other houses lay crumbled and gravestones had fallen over.

A quake estimated at 7.0 on the Richter scale struck Miyagi on May 26, injuring more than 100, but damage was limited since the epicenter was 44 miles deep. Saturday's earthquakes were much shallower, with epicenters between 10 to 12 km deep.

A meteorological agency official said there were no links between the Saturday earthquakes and the so-called Miyagi-oki earthquake (news - web sites), which has hit the region cyclically about every 30 to 40 years and last struck in 1978, killing 28 people.

"It is unlikely that there is any connection," he said.

The May 26 quake was about the same magnitude as a deadly earthquake in the western Japanese city of Kobe eight years ago, which measured 7.2 on the Richter scale and left 6,430 dead.
Japan sits on the junction of at least three tectonic plates, slabs on the earth's surface whose movements cause earthquakes.

Powerful quakes jolt north Japan

TOKYO - Three powerful earthquakes knocked out power grids, brought down buildings and set off mudslides across rain-soaked northern Japan yesterday.

At least 420 people were hurt, mostly with minor injuries, and more than 1,000 were evacuated.

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.2 struck Miyagi, a rural prefecture about 300km north-east of Tokyo, early yesterday morning. It followed a magnitude-5.5 tremor seven hours earlier.

More than 400 aftershocks, including one measuring 5.3, continued into the evening, raising fears about more mudslides in a region pelted by heavy rains.

Most injuries were caused by broken glass or falling objects.

In Naruse, one of several towns nearest the epicentre, the earthquake was powerful enough to knock over a stone fence outside one farmhouse.

Television news showed caved-in roofs, shorn-off walls, a house turned upside down and a collapsed garage.

Officials warned of more mudslides.

'Heavy rains and strong aftershocks are a dangerous combination,' said Mr Katsuaki Ito, director of the Tokyo-based Earthquake Information Centre. 'Waterlogged soil is already weakened.'

In nearby Yamoto, local officials coordinating the clean-up had to work in a tent outside after the earthquake left the town hall tilting, said town spokesman Katsuo Atsumi.

The earthquake temporarily caused power failures in thousands of homes, halted trains and forced the authorities to close roads to check for cracks and landslides. -- AP

Strong earthquakes hit northern Japan; more than 400 people injured

YAMOTO, Japan (AP) - Japanese soldiers brought water and blankets to weary people huddled in school gymnasiums Saturday after three powerful earthquakes rocked rural northern Japan, toppling homes and injuring more than 400 people.

The series of earthquakes knocked out power grids and triggered mudslides in Miyagi prefecture, a rural state about 300 kilometres northeast of Tokyo. The most serious temblor had a preliminary magnitude of 6.2.

A tremor measuring 5.5 struck seven hours earlier, and one of 5.3 followed several hours later. The government's meteorological agency reported more than 600 milder aftershocks continuing through the night.

No deaths were reported. National police said 421 people were reported injured - 27 of them seriously - with most suffering cuts and bruises from falling objects. At least 1,000 homes were damaged, police said.

Dozens of families taking refuge in a school gymnasium in this small town said their refrigerators and washing machines danced away from walls, cabinets came crashing down and rooms were carpeted with broken glass.

Their tales were silenced periodically by aftershocks.

"I just grabbed my kids and held on tight," said Yoshiko Takaki, a young mother camping out with her two toddlers on a futon. "I thought the whole house was going to fall apart."

Yamoto was near the epicentre, as evidenced by a house that was broken in half.

Authorities warned that aftershocks and the heavy rains pouring throughout the day could bring waterlogged embankments and hillsides rumbling down.

Takaki and her family were among more than 1,000 people in Miyagi province forced from their homes by a burst of seismic activity that began shortly after midnight and rattled the region of rice paddies and two-lane roads throughout the day.

Yamoto is in the hardest-hit area of Miyagi, chunks of which were left without power or water for much of the day.

The casualty toll may have been limited by the preparedness of residents, who experienced a magnitude-7 earthquake just two months ago.

Takaki said she removed heavy furniture from her bedroom - where she took cover with her children Saturday morning - after the temblor in May, which injured about 150 people.

She said her kitchen was strewn with broken plates and her refrigerator had moved 50 centimetres from the wall, but her house was still standing.

In the neighbouring town of Kanan, two people were pulled alive from a house buried in a mudslide, and authorities braced for forecasts calling for more downpours Sunday.

"The big concerns are the rain and aftershocks," said Jun Aizawa, a town official. "Our top priority now is getting emergency supplies to evacuation centres."

Three hundred soldiers from Japan's Self-Defence Force drove through the streets in olive-green trucks and jeeps loaded with water and blankets.

The latest quakes were centred at shallower depths than the one in May - and were more frightening for some who experienced both.

"It didn't shake. It was more like, wham! - right beneath us," said Sachie Akama, 51, another Yamoto resident.

Authorities closed roads to check for cracks and landslides. Train service was disrupted on several lines, stranding thousands of passengers.

Shiro Akama, Sachie's 83-year-old father, stared up from his futon on the floor of the gym. Cuts marked his forehead where a chest of drawers toppled over and hit him.

"At least nothing will fall on me here," he said.
