5-7-02 - DREAM - I was working on a computer screen and
was given a series of letters, which when typed on the computer represented
names of people in the Militia in the early days of America. When I typed
in the letters, the rest of the words/names filled in the spaces which I
was correct.
I was given the letters R R R, which I thought was Paul Revere's Raiders, and the name filled out after the letters. I remembered that Paul Revere road through the night to alert others that the Red Coats were coming. I then looked out the window and saw that someone had come through our neighborhood and dropped off large leaflets written in large black print with hatred about the things they were angry about. I then woke up and was thinking about the R R R and realized that Paul Revere wasn't R R R and I suddenly heard a loud single knock on my wall behind the bed. I remembered then, "One if by Land, Two if by Sea" and that made me a little nervous and the only way someone could attack us by sea is by submarine. But then I realized we are being attacked by land as well - the current Pipe Bomber is doing that. And we experienced the work of Timothy McVeigh in 1995 when he bombed the Oklahoma Murrah Building. I couldn't just lay there in bed and let that go. I had to figure out what R R R meant. You will see it below: RADICAL RELIGIOUS RIGHT |
DID ANYONE CELEBRATE PATRIOT'S DAY ON APRIL 19TH?
CELEBRATE PATRIOTS DAY, APRIL 19th
By E. James Adkins
We don't celebrate the 19th of April anymore. It was never celebrated in a big monumental way, but we once celebrated that day.
"Hardly a man is now alive
Who remembers that famous day and year."
-so wrote Longfellow in his poem that begins:
"Listen my children and you shall hear
Of the midnight ride of Paul Revere,"
Revere and others went forth on the night of April 18, 1775 with the alarm, "The redcoats are coming!" They rode all through the night.
"It was one by the village clock,
When he galloped into Lexington."
"It was two by the village clock
When he came to the bridge in Concord town."
Why was it so immediately important, on the night of April 18, 1775, for all of the people to know that the "redcoats are coming"?
It was the practice in our colonial period for each village to have a "common" or "village green" that was used for public gatherings. The most significant use of the "common" was as a mustering point and drill field for the village militia, "every able bodied man between the ages of 16 and 60 years." The militia was trained (as they termed it, "disciplined" and "well regulated") in the use of arms, here at the village green. The militia provided protection for individuals and property of the village against all threats. A man would spend some time in the "gaol" if he missed a militia call. The militia, each man, was required to keep and bear his own arms. It was common for the militia to maintain a community armory for the storage of shot, powder, flint, additional small arms and any heavy arms that it might afford. Individuals could draw from these supplies as needed, as well as acquiring their own private supplies.
On the night of April 18, 1775, Governor Gage (British Governor of fortress Boston) ordered British "redcoats" to march to the many surrounding villages, to seize and destroy all stores of munitions and to arrest the country leaders, the "arch-conspiritors."
British Major Pitcairn led the march into the countryside. The prime objective was to still the voice of the people, disarm them and make them more servile. Rebellion must stop, they said.
So, Revere took to horse to give the alarm: "To arms, to arms, the redcoats are coming!"
Early on the morning of the 19th of April, 1775, Major Pitcairn's "redcoats" arrived at Lexington and met Captain John Parker's company of colonial militia drawn-up on the meeting house green.
"By the rude bridge that arched the flood,
Their flag to April's breeze unfurled,
Hence once the embattled farmers stood
And fired the shot heard round the world."
-so wrote Emerson in 1837.
Some colonials were wounded and some were killed. Resistance to the larger British force proved futile. Pitcairn's return march to Boston became a humiliating rout as our colonial militiamen, Minutemen and individual countrymen harassed the British column from behind stone walls, rocks and trees, every step of the way.
The shot heard round the world, the first shot in our fight for independence from King George's slavery, was fired to protect and defend the natural right of men to protect themselves, to keep and bear arms for the purpose of preserving liberty. This right to keep and bear arms was codified on the 15th of December 1791 when it became the Second Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America.
We don't celebrate the 19th of April anymore. Perhaps we should.
"That memory may their deed redeem,
When, like our sires, our sons are gone.
Spirit, that made those heros dare
To die, and leave their children free."
-Emerson, 1837

It's a good thing to want to defend oneself,
but at what price and to what extent can we do that without hurting others who are really on our side too?MAN ARRESTED FOR TERRORISM
Taken from the USA Today(Aug 26,1997, p.3A) A West Virginia militia member was recently convicted under the new anti-terrorism legislation enacted since the Oklahoma bombing. James Rogers was convicted of obtaining blueprints of a FBI crime lab and sold the prints to a undercover agent. Despite the defendant's claim that the material copied was already in the public domain he was still convicted and is awaiting sentencing.
What constitutes the public domain poses a dilemna. In new legislation in Germany, a recent case of a woman having access to an underground newspaper was charged and the was found innocent as I believe? The growth of the Internet has also given the public access to many data banks. Simply accessing one of these sites could be considered criminal in some countries. At the very least, the Federal government is taken seriously the threat of the militia movements in various parts of the country. Could they do any less after Oklahoma?
THE PIPE BOMBER
Text of Note Left in Mailboxes
Text of note left in mailboxes in the Midwest where pipe bombs were found Friday:
Mailboxes are exploding! Why, you ask?
Attention people.
You do things because you can and want (desire) to
If the government controls what you want to do, they control what you can do.
If you are under the impression that death exists, and you fear it, you do anything to avoid it. (This is the same way pain operates. Naturally we strive to avoid negative emotion/pain.)
You allow yourself to fear death!
World authorities allowed, and still allow you to fear death!
In avoiding death you are forced to conform, if you fail to conform, you suffer mentally and physically. (Are world powers utilizing the natural survival instinct in a way that allows them to capitalize on the people?)
To ``live'' (avoid death) in this society you are forced to conform/slave away.
I'm here to help you realize/ understand that you will live no matter what! It is up to you people to open your hearts and minds. There is no such thing as death. The people I've dismissed from this reality are not at all dead.
Conforming to the boundaries, and restrictions imposed by the government only reduces the substance in your lives. When 1% of the nation controls 99% of the nations total wealth, is it a wonder why there are control problems?
The United States strives to provide freedom for their people. Do we really have personal freedom? I've lived here for many years, and I see much limitation. Does the definition of freedom include limitation? I've learned about the history of various civilizations in history, and I see more and more limitation. Do you people enjoy this trend of limitation? If not, change it!
As long as you are uninformed about death you will continue to say ``how high'', when the government tells you to ``jump''. As long as the government is uninformed about death they will continue tell you to ``jump'' Is the government uninformed about death, or are they pretending?
You have been missing how things are, for very long. I'm obtaining your attention in the only way I can. More info is on its way. More ``attention getters' are on the way. If I could, I would change only one person, unfortunately the resources are not accessible. It seems killing a single famous person would get the same media attention as killing numerous un-famous humans. There is less risk of being detained, associated with dismissing certain people.
Sincerely,
Someone Who Cares
PS. More info. will be delivered to various locations around the country.
Bomb Found in Rural Texas Mailbox
Tue May 7,10:36 AM ET
By BARRY BEDLAN, Associated Press Writer
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - A pipe bomb was found in the Texas Panhandle and it appears to be from the same source as 17 others found in the Midwest and Colorado, the FBI said Tuesday.
The latest bomb was accompanied by a letter, the FBI said. Most of the earlier bombs were accompanied by anti-government notes that warned "More `attention getters' are on the way."
"It's another pipe bomb. It looks similar to the others," said FBI agent Larry Holmquist in Omaha. "Upon our initial inspection, it appears it would be from the same source."
The bomb was found late Monday or early Tuesday, Holmquist said.
There have been no arrests and no injuries reported since six people were hurt Friday.
Authorities said anti-government notes found with most of the earlier devices were nearly identical and profiling experts have said whoever wrote them is probably an older American man.
Investigators had not yet inspected the letter attached to the Amarillo bomb, Holmquist said.
"We haven't made any comparisons yet, but everything else, including the bomb itself, looks similar in nature," he said.
The FBI had said Monday that the first 15 bombs clearly came from the same source. The 16th bomb, found Monday in Nebraska, was "pretty much the same" as the first 15, said Mike Matuzek, Postal Service district manager for Nebraska and southwest Iowa.
And FBI agent Mark Mershon said the 17th bomb, found Monday in south-central Colorado, was consistent with the others.
The discovery of the bomb in a Colorado mailbox already had made authorities fearful that the wave of terrorism had spread out of the Midwest.
"The logical concern here, given that this device is consistent with the others, is: `Is the tip of the iceberg?'" Mershon said after the 17th bomb was found in a plastic bag in a curbside mailbox outside Salida, Colo.
Postal carriers in the area were told not to deliver materials to any closed mailbox.
The scare began Friday when six people were injured by mailbox explosives in Illinois and Iowa, creating new fears about domestic terrorism striking the heartland.
By the end of the weekend, eight bombs had been found in Illinois and Iowa, and then eight more were discovered in rural areas of Nebraska.
The bombs in Iowa and Illinois were found in rural locations that form a large, uneven ring about 70 miles in diameter. The Nebraska bomb sites form a large ring about 90 miles across.
Those two areas are separated by about 350 miles but connected by Interstate 80. Salida, about 100 miles southwest of Denver, is more than 400 miles west of the Nebraska bomb sites.
Amarillo is about 325 miles southeast of Salida.
At Salida, all mailbox doors were open along the quiet residential street, 12 miles from the center of town, where the bomb was found. A man who answered the door at the house said he didn't want to comment.
"It seems unreal in a small town like Salida, in a residential neighborhood. It's just unbelievable," said Ida Hansen, a resident of the town of some 4,700 people for 20 years.
A suspected explosive device found Monday in a field about 80 miles east of Salida turned out not to be related to the case, said Rich Marianos, a special agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.
As nervous letter carriers went back to work across the Midwest on Monday, rural residents in Illinois, Iowa and Nebraska were asked to leave their mailboxes open or remove their mailbox doors as a precaution.
Jim Pelzer wore safety goggles and earplugs as he delivered mail at Tipton, Iowa, where one of the bombs exploded Friday. "My feeling was when we had 9-11 and the anthrax scare, I was a little concerned about my job safety," Pelzer said. "But now I'm intimidated and scared."
Officials described the bombs as three-quarter-inch steel pipes attached to 9-volt batteries, and said they appeared to be triggered by being touched or moved.

Postal Service: http://www.usps.com
FBI: http://www.fbi.govFBI issues bulletin in pipe bomb cases
May 7, 2002 Posted: 12:39 PM EDT (1639 GMT)
LUBBOCK, Texas (CNN) -- The FBI on Tuesday issued an all-points bulletin for a 22-year-old man in connection with pipe bombs found in mailboxes in five states within the last week.
The man was identified as Luke John Helder, whom the FBI described as a white male with dark hair and green eyes. The FBI said he was "armed and dangerous."
The FBI said he was last seen in Texas -- where the most recent bomb was found -- driving a gray or black 1992 Honda Accord with a Minnesota license plate bearing the number EZL 783.
The FBI said Tuesday that a pipe bomb found in a Texas mailbox appears similar to the 17 found in four other states.
The explosive was discovered Monday night in Amarillo, Texas. A source from the FBI said he believed a note was found but could not confirm it.
FBI agents said Monday they believe one person seeking attention is responsible for 17 pipe bombs that have been discovered since Friday in mailboxes in Iowa, Illinois, Nebraska and Colorado. Six people were injured last week in Iowa and Illinois.
Authorities said they based their belief on the fact that typewritten letters attached to the bombs were in the first person singular and the bombs were similar in design.
In the letters, the writer is critical of the government and appears focused on death, stating: "If the government controls what you want to do, they control what you can do."
And: "There is no such thing as death. The people I've dismissed from this reality are not at all dead."
The writer adds, "I'm obtaining your attention in the only way I can," and promises more "attention getters."
FBI profilers studied the notes over the weekend and concluded Monday the bomber appears to be an educated white man whose native language is English.
In addition, a bomb that appears not to have been related was found after it exploded inside a mailbox in Waldorf, Maryland, outside Washington. Unlike the others, which were pipe bombs, it was made with chemicals contained in a soda bottle, authorities said.
Though nearly identical, the 17 bombs in the Midwest and Colorado differed in their detonation mechanisms, federal authorities said Monday.
"The detonation devices were apparently different in Iowa and Illinois from what they were in Nebraska," said Holmquist. "The difference [in the detonators] caused the explosives in Nebraska to be some more stable and less likely to explode if someone were to handle it. However, they still were active explosives."
Six of the eight bombs found in Iowa and Illinois blew up Friday, wounding four postal employees and two residents. Two other devices were discovered but rendered safe.
None of the seven bombs found in eastern Nebraska over the weekend nor the eighth one found Monday near Hastings detonated, a spokeswoman for the Nebraska State Patrol said.
Yet another pipe bomb was found Monday in Salida, Colorado, attached to a folded piece of paper.
Construction was "consistent with those found recently in Nebraska and Iowa," said a statement from the FBI's Denver office.
"Residents throughout Colorado are asked to exercise extreme caution when opening their mailboxes and to immediately report any suspicious packages or activities to appropriate authorities," the statement added.
The U.S. Postal Service Web site said authorities are asking Colorado residents to leave their rural mailbox doors open, so carriers can see inside the receptacle.
At a news conference Sunday, Mike Matuzek, Postal Service district manager for the Central Plains, asked residents of Iowa and Nebraska who owned "rural-style mailboxes" -- ones that are mounted at the curb or a good distance away from a residence -- to remove mailbox doors or fix them in such a way that the doors can't be closed without significant effort. He also predicted Illinois would follow suit.
"This is to provide for the safety and well-being of not only the public but also the postal employees that are delivering the mail, " Matuzek said.
Federal officials emphasized that, though the devices have been found in mailboxes, none was sent through the mail.
Most of the pipes were about 1 inch in diameter and 6 inches long and were attached to wires or a battery. The FBI has called the bombs a case of domestic terrorism.

Man captured in mailbox bomb cases
May 7, 2002 Posted: 8:26 PM EDT (0026 GMT)
LOVELOCK, Nevada (CNN) -- The man sought for questioning in a rash of incidents in which pipe bombs were planted in mailboxes in five states was taken into federal custody Tuesday night in Nevada, federal authorities said.
Luke John Helder was taken into custody at 7:55 p.m. EDT after his car was stopped by the Nevada Highway Patrol in Lovelock, about 90 miles northeast of Reno, authorities said. They said he was apprehended following discussions with police and is now in federal custody.
Helder, 21, still has not been charged with a crime, authorities said.
The FBI had earlier in the day issued an all-points bulletin for a 22-year-old college student wanted for questioning in a rash of incidents in which pipe bombs were planted in mailboxes in five states in the past five days, in some cases exploding.
The FBI had warned Helder should be considered "armed and dangerous" and said he was driving a 4-door gray or black 1992-model Honda Accord bearing Minnesota license plate EZL 873. He was last seen in Texas.
Helder was described as white, 5-foot-9 and, weighing 150 pounds with brown hair and green eyes. He is a student at the University of Wisconsin-Stout and a member of a three-person rock band called "Apathy," investigators said.
At an afternoon news conference in Omaha, Nebraska, the FBI distributed a photograph of Helder and asked him to turn himself in so that nobody else will be harmed.
Authorities described Helder as "an intelligent young man with strong family ties," said he has not been charged with any crime at this point and stopped short of identifying him as a suspect.
The young man's father, Cameron Helder, issued an emotional appeal Tuesday to his son to turn himself in.
"Luke is not a dangerous person. He is just trying to make a statement," the elder Helder told reporters.
The father added, choking back tears at times, "Luke, you need to talk to someone. Please don't hurt anyone else.
It's time to talk. You have the attention you wanted. We love you very much. We want you home safe. Please call."
Authorities had earlier released one of the typewritten notes left with the bombs which said, "If the government controls what you want to do, they control what you can do." It adds, "There is no such thing as death" and "I'm obtaining your attention the only way I can."
Student had no disciplinary problems
FBI Special Agent James Bogner said that investigators want to talk to Helder about the series of bombs in the Midwest and urged him to come forward.
"We do not want to see him harmed or any public harmed," Bogner said.
The agent said investigators believe the suspect moved from Illinois to Iowa and Nebraska and then Colorado and Texas. "We think he may be located in that part of the country," he said.
Bogner said that he did not have any indications that Helder had a gun, but in the all-points bulletin, the FBI said he should be considered "armed and dangerous."
He has not been charged with any crime, authorities emphasized.
The FBI urged anybody with information to call a toll-free number, 866-847-2324.
Jennifer Klement, a spokeswoman for the University of Wisconsin-Stout at Menomonie, said Helder is registered there as a junior. She said Helder, whose home is in Pine Island, Minnesota, is majoring in art with a concentration in industrial design. The university, which is just west of Eau Claire, has no record of disciplinary problems involving Helder.
This is the last week of classes at the state institution, which has about 8,000 students. Final exams are scheduled next week.
Different detonation devices : Monday's incident in Texas raised to 18 the number of pipe bombs found since last Friday. Six people were injured in explosions from the first bombs in Illinois and Iowa. The devices are cylindrical, about 6 inches long, three-quarters of an inch in diameter with wires attached to a 9-volt battery.
According to federal investigators, three mailbox bombs were found in Illinois, five in Iowa, eight in Nebraska, one in Colorado and one in Texas.
Though nearly identical, the bombs differed in their detonation mechanisms.
"The detonation devices were apparently different in Iowa and Illinois from what they were in Nebraska," said Larry Holmquist, a spokesman for the FBI's field division in Omaha. "The difference [in the detonators] caused the explosives in Nebraska to be somewhat more stable and less likely to explode if someone were to handle it. However, they still were active explosives."
In Washington, Postmaster General John Potter said Tuesday 150 postal inspectors were involved in the investigation. He said his agency's top priority "has been to alert our employees and the public about the precautionary measures that should be taken to minimize possible risks.
Federal officials emphasized that, though the devices have been found in mailboxes, none of them was sent through the mail.
Though the FBI has classified the incidents as domestic terrorism, federal officials Tuesday noted that between 1993 and 1997 an average of between 4,700 and 5,300 "explosive incidents" were reported around the country each year -- with mailbox bombings acccounting for 26 percent, the most predominant kind.

Pipe Bomb Suspect Puzzles Authorities
By SCOTT SONNER
.c The Associated Press
RENO, Nev. (May 9) - Friends can't believe it and even local law enforcement officials admit the college student from Minnesota accused in a string of pipe bombings doesn't strike them as the typical terrorist.
''He looks like the average college kid from the Midwest,'' Washoe County Sheriff Dennis Balaam said of Lucas John Helder, 21, who is accused of placing homemade bombs in mailboxes in five states.
''He's a quiet, polite, well-behaved, well-mannered kind of kid. When I talked with him, he shook my hand and called me sir,'' the sheriff told The Associated Press in Reno.
Authorities were left to reconcile that portrait with the young man they said confessed to making 24 pipe bombs out of tape, paper clips and Christmas tree bulbs. Six people were injured from the bombs, which were packed with smokeless gunpowder and BBs or nails.
The FBI said Helder placed 18 of the devices in mailboxes in Iowa, Illinois, Nebraska, Colorado and Texas, along with anti-government notes. Helder had six other bombs with him when he was arrested Tuesday, authorities said.
''He indicated to FBI agents he knew people would be injured if these pipe bombs were detonated,'' Assistant U.S. Attorney Craig Denney said Wednesday.
Helder faces federal charges in four states. At a brief hearing in Reno on Wednesday, he was ordered held without bail for transfer to Iowa. He could be sent to prison for life if convicted.
U.S. District Court Magistrate Robert McQuaid Jr. denied a request to release Helder to the custody of his parents. ''It's apparent to me that he suffers from some apparent mental health problems,'' McQuaid said.
Asked by the judge if he understood that he does not have to make any statement, Helder replied, ''most definitely.'' Asked if he understood that any statements he made can be used against him, he replied ''for sure.''
Helder's deputy public defender, Vito de la Cruz, said Helder was willing to face the charges. ''He's anxious to have a jury trial,'' he said.
The FBI issued an alert for Helder after his father, Cameron, called police late Monday night about letters from his son that included references to death, anti-government comments and the phrase ''Mailboxes are exploding.'' The same phrase was in the notes found with the bombs.
The bombs rattled the heartland and brought back memories of last fall's anthrax-by-mail attacks as well as the case of the Unabomber, who was turned in by his own brother. The bombings prompted the Postal Service to suspend service in some areas and urge people to leave their mailboxes open so letter carriers could peer inside.
Helder was described Wednesday as bright, polite and not given to ranting about politics. In high school, he played football and golf and was in the choir. Until this week, his criminal record showed only a marijuana possession charge last October.
James Divine, his roommate at the University of Wisconsin-Stout in Menomonie, Wis., was quoted as telling authorities that Helder had mentioned some ''anti-government rhetoric here and there'' but that he felt it was harmless.
The FBI said Helder admitted making the first of his eight bombs in his Menomonie apartment after buying some of the raw materials in mid-April. He made 16 more bombs at a motel near Omaha, Neb., the FBI said.
During his odyssey, Helder was stopped by police and released three times for traffic violations. On Friday, Helder was pulled over for speeding in St. Edward, Neb., 12 miles from where a pipe bomb was found later.
His capture ended a virtually nonstop driving stint during which he did little to conceal his identity. He checked into a Nebraska motel under his own name and used his credit card at a gas station.
His parents arrived at Reno-Tahoe International Airport early Thursday from their home in Pine Island, Minn. They appeared grim and exhausted as they were whisked away by FBI agents. Reporters were kept well away and unable to ask questions.
''It's finally set in that it was unfortunately their son,'' said the Rev. Dennis Kampa, the Helders' longtime priest. ''They're thankful no one was killed. They're very grateful nothing worse happened.''
Helder surrendered about 55 miles east of Reno after chase that hit speeds of 100 mph. It began when a motorist spotted Helder's gray Honda on Interstate 80 and called authorities.
Helder held a loaded shotgun to his head at times during the chase, according to Pershing County Sheriff Ron Skinner. He was talked into tossing the gun out the car window and surrendering.
Denney said Helder ''made statements to the FBI negotiator during pursuit that he might be interested in taking his own life.'' He told federal agents he purchased the shotgun to kill himself, Denney said.
Helder was charged in Iowa and Illinois with using a pipe bomb in a crime of violence and destroying property used in interstate commerce. He was charged in Nebraska with interstate transportation of explosives and he faces a firearms charge in Nevada.
''In my conversation with him, I asked whether he was on any medication or thought he would do himself any harm,'' Balaam said. ''He said, 'No,' that he was ready to face the day.''
''He probably doesn't understand the magnitude of the trouble he is in. Most 21-year-olds involved in the federal justice system across multiple jurisdictions don't understand that.''

Wisconsin paper prints pipe bomb suspect's manifesto
MADISON, Wis., May 8, 2002 (Reuters) - In a rambling manifesto arguing that ghosts exist and marijuana be legalized, the college art student charged with planting pipe bombs across the U.S. heartland wrote that he and others may die "to change all of you for the better."
"I'm taking very drastic measures in attempt to provide this information to you. You people have failed long enough," said the six-page type-written letter signed "Lucas Helder" and sent to a student newspaper in Madison from Omaha, Nebraska, on Friday.
Badger Herald newspaper editor Alex Conant said Helder's missive arrived on Monday and was turned over to the FBI on Tuesday before being published on the paper's Web site, www.badgerherald.com.
"I looked at it late Monday night but didn't make the connection until the next day when his name came out," Conant said.
Helder, 21, was arrested on a Nevada highway later on Tuesday and has been charged in the bombings that injured six people in Iowa and Illinois, including four postal carriers. If convicted, he faces 30 years to life in prison.
Conant said the envelope was post-marked on Friday in Omaha, Nebraska -- the day the bombs went off. Other pipe bombs planted in mailboxes across Nebraska, Colorado and Texas were not rigged to detonate, according to the FBI, which has branded the bombings an act of "domestic terrorism."
In the letter, Helder expresses a convoluted philosophy about life and death, and condemns society's complexity and technology for enslaving people to money and "greed."
He also urges readers to "recognize ... that you go on when you die," alongside vaguely worded religious beliefs and his apparent trust in the supernatural.
"You may hear ghost stories, but have you ever seen one? If you haven't, get out the camera and start seeing. ... I was curious about the existence of ghosts, and my curiosity lead me to further investigation, which in turn allowed me to KNOW ghosts truly do exist."
The letter also criticized laws against marijuana.
"Is this yet another governmental agenda utilized as a tool for order?" he wrote. "Wake up people! You're here for such a short time, why have regrets?"
In an oblique reference to his alleged five-day bombing campaign, Helder wrote: "I will die/change in the end for this, but that's OK, hahaha paradise awaits! I'm dismissing a few individuals from reality, to change all of you for the better, surely you can understand my logic."
"See you all in 2011 (or sooner). Now go find your higher selves! As clear and concise as possible :)," the letter concluded, followed by Helder's signature and another rambling post-script.

The Radical Religious Right
THE R R R
Comments written by greg@qrd.org
The American Family Association, headed by the Rev. Donald Wildmon, headquartered in Tupelo, Mississippi, serves as the "media watchdog" of the radical religious right. Their primary activities have been the organization of boycotts and letter writing campaigns targeted at businesses and media entities which promulgate soft porn (ex. Playboy), or portray lesbians and gay men in a positive light. Secondarily, the American Family Association targets violence on television. The American Family Association publishes a monthly newsletter (the most recent edition of which is available on their web site) listing those television shows, businesses, and advertisers who they are currently targeting, as well as opinion pieces.
Pat Robertson and the Christian Coalition
Pat Robertson is quite plausibly the best known of the Religious Right, through his abortive 1988 challenge to George Bush for the Republican Presidential nomination, and through his daily appearances on his television program - The 700 Club. Robertson survived his own political demise, and the demise of the original religious right, centered around Falwell's "Moral Majority". He retrenched, brought in Ralph Reed to head the Christian Coalition, which he founded in 1989, pioneered the stealth campaign, and now wields more raw political power than any other leader of the new religious right.
Pat Robertson has often been the victim of his own intemperate statements, perhaps nowhere so evident as his 1991 book The New World Order, in which he espouses a highly conspiracist point of view, one that would be quite at home in many of the extremist fringes of the far right. By contrast, Ralph Reed, titular head of the Christian Coalition, has appeared considerably more moderate, reaching out to Catholics and mainstream Jews in his efforts to build a broad base of political power. Reed has masterminded the grassroots campaigning tactics, as well as the art of advocating extremism with moderate language, which have gained the Christian Coalition their present power base.
Concerned Women for America
Concerned Women for America, headed by Beverly LaHaye, wife of evangelist and pastor Tim LaHaye, is a leading religious right organization. The group has long opposed abortion and women's rights, being originally formed to fight against the Equal Rights Amendment, and has recently become much more vocally opposed to equal rights for lesbians and gay people, and to the National Education Association, for it's support for a Gay-Lesbian-Bisexual History Month. Concerned Women for America has also recently taken a decidedly nativist turn in their pronouncements, opposing much United Nations involvement by the United States, and several United Nations conferences on the rights of women and children.
Focus on the Family
Focus on the Family, headquartered in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and led by Dr. James Dobson is a leader in the "pro-family", "traditional values" fight. Focus on the Family disguises much of its anti-lesbigay work behind a facade of pro-family rhetoric, but those who subscribe to it's "Family Issues Alert" fax service, are treated to a double helping. Focus on the Family was very active in advocating the passage of Colorado's Amendment Two, which denies equality to lesbian, gay and bisexual Coloradans, while providing for special rights for heterosexual Coloradans, and in advancing similar ballot initiatives in Maine. Focus has also extensively used the AIDS plague to advance their abstinence-based views regarding sex education. Focus on the Family has maintained a long-term, mutually-beneficial relationship with the Family Research Council, and has also shown a great deal of support for the Promise Keepers organization.
Paul Cameron and the Family Research Institute
Paul Cameron is both the best known, and the least credible, of the various psychologists, medical doctors, and associated professionals which actively collaborate with the Religious Right, and attempt to lend a veneer of scientific respectability to the Religious Right's anti-gay propaganda.
The Eagle Forum
Phyllis Schlafly first broke onto the conservative political landscape with the publication of her book A Choice, Not An Echo in 1964, which was an endorsement of Barry Goldwater's campaign for the Presidency. She emerged as a leader of the Religious Right's opposition to the Equal Rights Amendment in the seventies. The Eagle Forum, which she founded in 1972, has continued her fight against gender equality and feminism, and has expanded their reach to also focus on homosexuality (one of the original bases for her opposition to the Equal Rights Amendment), education, abortion and the United Nations.
Schafly's son, John was outed by the now defunct magazine Queer World in 1992.
The Lunatic Fringe - Militias, Conspiracy Theories, Holocaust Revisionists and Neo-Nazis
While many of the more mainstream Religious Right will disclaim and repudiate many of the extreme views herein contained, these views have consistently been propounded by some within the Religious Right, albeit in somewhat watered-down forms. These fringe movements are also where some of the influencing philosophies of the mainstream Religious Right -- particularly nativism and populism, can be seen most clearly. Many of these groups, particularly the Identity Christianity, and neo-Nazi groups are also virulently anti-homosexual.

The modern day militia movement (if a single homogeneous movement can be said to exist), contains elements of agreement with the Religious Right, as well as elements of opposition to the Religious Right. It is, at the same time, nativist, populist and authoritarian, traits shared by the more mainstream Religious Right, and individualist, libertarian, and anti-authoritarian, traits which are fundamentally in opposition to the Religious Right.
While the militia movement contains many who are adherents to Christian Identity and White Supremacism, some of whom are in positions of authority, power and influence within the movement, those who hold these views are by no means predominant or ascendant within the militia movement. The militia movement is not, in and of itself a Neo-Nazi, White Supremacist or Racist movement.
The militia movement also contains many who are adherents of the various "New World Order" Conspiracy Theories.

Conspiracy Theorists
Conspiracy theories, particularly "New World Order" conspiracy theories have strongly influenced segments of the religious right, especially those of the religious right who believe in the impending return of Jesus Christ, preceded by a seven year period of chaos which they refer to as "the great tribulation". These theories were largely pioneered by the work of the John Birch Society, which, in addition to being strongly anti-communist, saw the United Nations as the instrument of an international communist conspiracy. These views are particularly apparent in several of Pat Robertson's books, including The New World Order and others. Conspiracy theories are also especially evident in the writings of the religious right fringes, as typified by Texe Marrs, and in much of the material produced by the many far-right militia groups.

Christian Reconstructionism
Christian Reconstructionism is an extreme form of post-millenial, Calvinistic Protestantism which argues that it is the moral obligation of Christians to reclaim every "worldly" institution for Christ. Reconstructionism also holds that the entire Law of the Pentateuch continues as a standard of righteousness even today for Christians, and that Christians must exercise dominion through the power of God's Law over all the Earth before Christ shall come again. As part of their theology, reconstructionists hold that, under the coming "kingdom of God", which they are actively engaged in bringing about, that the Biblical penalty for homosexuality (death) will be enforced, though they will always demur that they do not advocate that the penalty be applied today, but only in some nebulous future time when they believe that God will have instituted a theocratic form of government.
Reconstructionism can be traced to the Cobb County, Georgia ordinance stating that homosexuality is against community standards. Particularly, several of the county commissioners of Cobb County are known adherents of the forms of Reconstructionism advocated by Gary North and Gary DeMar.

Holocaust Revisionism and Neo-Naziism
In addition to the 'traditional' form of anti-Semitic Holocaust revisionism, practiced by the extremist fringes of the religious right such as the Institute for Historical Review, a new form of anti-gay Holocaust revisionism, endorsed and sponsored by the somewhat more mainstream religous right, including Colorado for Family Values and the Oregon Citizen's Alliance, has recently emerged. The new anti-gay Holocaust revisionism alleges that gay men were not particularly persecuted under the German Nazi regime, and additionally, that homosexual men were especially prevalent in the ranks of German Naziism, and were in large part, the motivators of the Jewish Holocaust. This new form of Holocaust revisionism is typified by the book The Pink Swastika by Scott Lively (formerly of the Oregon Citizen's Alliance) and Kevin Abrams.
While not, in any way attempting to diminish the repugnance of 'traditional' anti-Semitic Holocaust revisionism, this new form of Holocaust revisionism poses a grave danger insofar as it is sponsored and endorsed by groups which are (marginally) closer to the political center than those groups which promulgate 'traditional' Holocaust revisionism. These groups have also shown, through the several anti-gay Oregon ballot initiatives, and the Colorado amendment two, that they are able and willing to influence public opinion to persecute gay men and lesbians.
We stand with our Jewish friends, brothers, and sisters in remembering the senseless and brutal slaughter of over twelve million of our fellow human beings -- straight and gay, Jewish and Gentile, men and women, and in proclaiming "Never Again!"

Founded in 1978, the Institute for Historical Review is a non-partisan, not-for-profit educational enterprise that continues the tradition of Historical Revisionism pioneered by distinguished historians such as Harry Elmer Barnes, A. J. P. Taylor, Charles Tansill, Paul Rassinier, and William H. Chamberlin.
The purpose of the IHR is, in the words of Barnes, to "bring history into accord with acts." To this end, it sheds light on suppressed information about key chapters of history, especially twentieth century history, that have special relevance today. The IHR promotes the cause of international peace by encouraging greater understanding of the root causes, nature and consequences of war. It firmly supports the First Amendment right of free speech.
Probably the best-known and certainly the most controversial aspect of the IHR's work has been its treatment of the Holocaust issue. Over the years, the IHR has published several major books and numerous probing essays by scholars such as Dr. Arthur Butz of Northwestern University and French professor Robert Faurisson that call into question the orthodox Holocaust extermination story.

Stormfront is a resource for those courageous men and women fighting to preserve their White Western culture, ideals and freedom of speech and association -- a forum for planning strategies and forming political and social groups to ensure victory.
- White Aryan Resistance Hate Page
While not, in any way attempting to diminish the repugnance of 'traditional' anti-Semitic Holocaust revisionism, this new form of Holocaust revisionism poses a grave danger insofar as it is sponsored and endorsed by groups which are (marginally) closer to the political center than those groups which promulgate 'traditional' Holocaust revisionism. These groups have also shown, through the several anti-gay Oregon ballot initiatives, and the Colorado amendment two, that they are able and willing to influence public opinion to persecute gay men and lesbians.
We stand with our Jewish friends, brothers, and sisters in remembering the senseless and brutal slaughter of over six million of our fellow human beings -- straight and gay, Jewish and Gentile, men and women, and in proclaiming "Never Again!"
Other Fringe Right Wing Movements
- The Constitution Action Party
Not particularly conspiracist, neo-nazi or militaristic in their outlook.
- The Creators Rights Party
Their goal: restoring God's plan for government to its rightful place of authority in this nation.

CultureFacts keeps watch over political and cultural forces that threaten the traditional family, with a special focus on the homosexual agenda. It tracks the strategies and rhetoric of America's powerful "gay" lobby and its ongoing campaign to redefine marriage and family and propagandize children. Beyond the homosexual movement, CultureFacts will alert you to the latest machinations of the cultural Left's destructive crusade to reverse age-old notions of right and wrong.

Pro-Lifers / Anti-Abortionists
Anti-abortionism, while not a directly queer-related issue, distinguishes itself as one of the few issues other than gay / lesbian / bi equal rights that defines the religious right. Not all anti-abortionists are per se part of the religious right, but all of the religious right are necessarily anti-abortion.
