THE BLUE BEAR
THE VOICE OF THE EAST WIND

9-03-03 - DREAM - I went to a place where there was a lot of
people milling around. It might have been a school, but I'm not sure.
I was walking through a hallway by myself and a big man grabbed me and dragged me into a side hallway where there were no people. On the wall was a mould that was head-shaped sticking out of the wall. It was head high. He shoved my face into this thing, which clamped over my nose. He told me, "Breathe deep", and though I couldn't smell anything, I felt myself going unconscious and passing out. When I awoke, I was standing in the middle of a crowded room, full of kids and adults and I looked like a life-size blue bear cartoon costumed character and I was giving a speech to all these people. Behind me were two other life-size bears, standing up like humans, also in cartoon-like character costumes. One was cinnamon colored, and one was white with spots on it. They were going to speak after I finished my speech. I woke up without knowing what I said. NOTE: The fact that this mould was on the wall, means others are also going to become the voice of the East Wind, and others are going to become like the other bears as well. There will be more than one speaker.

Blue (or Gray) Bear
by Richard L. Dieterle
Blue Bear was the third of the great Spirit Bears created by Earthmaker, who gave him the nature of the east wind and set him up in that quadrant as an Island Weight to suppress the instability of his creation. Blue Bear is the spiritual original of the Mâtco, or Grizzly Bear
The fur of this Spirit Bear is made of hairs that vary in thickness and color so that he is described variously as "blue" (tco) or "gray." Blue Bear has control over the days, which explains why he is sometimes described as being gray or even polychrome: for days change from sunny to stormy and many states in between, and so run the gamut of the color spectrum.
It is because of Blue Bear's power over the days that some who are blessed by him can "hold the day" and ensure good weather for sacred gatherings.
Members of the Blue Bear Subclan, who are descended from Blue Bear, keep calendar sticks which track time, allowing them to give directions to the tribe on when planting or hunting cycles are in effect. Members of this subclan were priests who placed their altars on hills or high bluffs.
Blue Bear led a party to the first gathering of the Hotcâk clans at Red Banks. On the way, every time he passed a plant or animal that had sharp and dangerous parts, they were transformed into men who followed in his train. When he arrived at Red Banks he informed all those gathered there that his followers were to be the Soldier Clan of the Hotcâgara, charged by Earthmaker to ward off evil from the nation.
It is said that when bears or Bear clansmen die, they return to the abode of Blue Bear.
Bear Spirits
by Richard L. Dieterle
After Earthmaker created this island on which we live, he created all living things, man being the very last of these. The first and foremost animal that Earthmaker created was a bear of pure white color, whom he placed in the north. This is White Bear. The second bear that he created was Red Bear, whom he placed in the west. Earthmaker next created in the east a kind of grizzly bear, Blue Bear, who was the color of the sky, either blue, or as some say, gray. The last bear created by Earthmaker was Black Bear, who was placed in the south.
These four kinds of bears were created as Island Weights to help stop the incessant spinning of the primordial earth. Spiritually, they were not only bears, but the four cardinal winds as well. White Bear was chief over polar bears, Red Bear held hegemony over the brown bears of earth, Blue Bear ruled over Grizzles, and Black Bear was chief of the terrestrial black bears.
Others say that Black Bear was the eldest and White Bear the youngest.
This is more consonant with a story in which the chief of the bears is known as "Black Fur," marking him clearly as a black bear.
In one account, each of the Spirit Bears is the forefather of the four Hotcâk Bear Subclans. The ambiguity of the black Spirit Bear probably derives from the temporary extinction of the Black Bear Subclan, which was later reinaugerated by Fourth Universe.
There is good evidence that the proto-Winnebago-Chiwere predecessor to the Bear Clan was a Black Bear Clan. Black bears can be found in not only their nominal color, but white, gray, blue, and cinnamon as well.
This is strongly suggested by a name collected by the Rev. J. O. Dorsey. He says that Tconakera is "the ancient name of the Black Bear Gens, now known as the Hôtc Ikikaratcara."
Most accounts say that of the four spirit brothers, White Bear was sent down to earth to found the Hotcâk Bear Clan.
However, one account names Blue Bear as the founder [7], and the old name for the clan, Tconakera, seems to be related to Foster's tconañkera, "the blue back of a wolf."
Blue Bear, as chief of the fierce grizzles (mâtco) is naturally blue (tco). When Black Fur sent a bear to punish an act of sacrilege, it debauched from a spring covered in blue earth, which in Hotcâk is mâ tco. Thus, it was easy to transform the bluish black bears into mâtco, grizzles.
The interregnum that arose from the extinction of the Black Bear Subclan would have caused the realignment of functions and hierarchy seen in the present day structure of the Bear Clan.
The four primordial Bear Spirits are really men who manifest themselves as bears. Bear clansmen, who are descended from these spirit bears, are manâpe or "soldiers" (police), not only because the ancestral bear spirits suppressed the primordial disorder of the earth, but because the bear has a furious spirit, and from the force of its temper, is hard to overcome.
Originally, Earthmaker chose Bear to watch over the world, rather like a manâpe. However, his temper was so violent that soon every creature in the world lived in terror of him. Consequently, Earthmaker had to recall him.
Originally, soldiers were generated from briars and thorns, creatures with sharp claws and talons, and all the other things of the earth that are the most dangerous and warlike of their kind.
The function of the soldiers is to act as a police force, defending the law, guarding valuables and persons, and meting out punishment to evil doers. As such, they represent the opposite of chaos, which in world mythology is symbolized by waters, since this element of nature is of itself formless and fluid, incapable by its own nature of any definition. Consequently, we find many instances of bears walking on water, since the bear stands opposed to the element of chaos as the champion of law and order. Thus when the primordial bears came to this earth, they did so by walking on the waters.
It is this same power to overcome and control chaos that is responsible for Bear Spirits controlling the wind. Because Earthmaker made the Spirit Bears the four cardinal winds, they control the weather generally. This power resides even in common terrestrial bears, and in certain Bear clansmen who have assumed this power from their spiritual ancestors. Ordinary bears, for instance, always cause it to snow just before they give birth because they like to use the snow to wash their cubs; and if a Bear clansman of special training pours a tobacco offering to Blue Bear, he can "hold" as many as four days. When a day is held, the sun moves through the sky, but the day itself remains fair for the period.
The living bears that roam the earth today are descended from the original Spirit Bears.
Once a Spirit Bear came to earth and mated with a woman and produced a man who was half bear and half human, who was known as "Shaggy Man" because of the tufts of bear fur found on his body. Shaggy Man had a bear as a half-brother whom he forced to walk on his hind legs wherever he went, and this is why bears are today the most bipedal of animals. In those days there was a race of giant bears just as there was a race of human Giants. By superior courage and wit, Shaggy Man conquered these giant bears and made the world safer for humanity.
Alliance with a Bear Spirit may make it possible to kill bears at will. The uncle of the founder of the Bird Clan had a wife who appeared to be a Bear Spirit. When he was taken prisoner, she was in human form, but when he escaped to rendezvous with her, she had assumed the form of a bear and was seen walking across the waters of the lake, though his wife, presumably, the uncle had control over bears, and could hunt them successfully at will.
Red Squirrel, when he was still human, was able to hunt bears with the aid of a burnt gourd and a white bear. The white bear was a Spirit Bear who could cause bears to appear for the hunt. All Red Squirrel had to do was shake his gourd, and the bear would fall dead.
Some Bear Spirits are evil. One of Grandmother Earth's brothers, Bear, was such a spirit. Hare once visited this uncle of his bring a gift of a bag of acorns which Bear eats up completely. Bear tells his nephew that someone else must have done it, and that all he did was to eat half an acorn. In the end, his nephew tricks him so that he is shot dead by Hare's thunder-arrow.
In a parody of this story, Bear tells Trickster that the only way that he can see Earthmaker is to die, so Trickster induces a group of archers to shoot him, but since he is immortal they can't kill him. He weeps so many tears over his foolishness that they form Lake Winnebago.
Sometimes lesser Bear Spirits can be enlisted in activities that border on sorcery, as in the case of Red Squirrel and the white Bear Spirit. However, true to the form of an evil spirit, Red Squirrel became greedy, and a good spirit changed him forever into the mundane squirrel of our own times.
One Bear Spirit married into the Giants. When the Giants gambled in a game of "chips" with Turtle for human lives, they called upon their ursine brother-in-law to play for them. He lost and Turtle promptly dispatched the Giants that had been wagered.
The Twins encountered a Grizzly Bear Spirit in the west near a hill. The grizzly attacked them, bolling over Flesh, and actually killing him. Ghost brought Flesh back to life, and the two of them dispatched the bear. They took the meat home to share with their father, but he was appalled that they had killed a grizzly. He said that such animals were holy and that they must clean out the kettle in which they cooked the meat.
Some Waterspirits seem to share in the nature of Bear Spirits. There is one variety called a Hûtc-Waktcexi, "Bear-Waterspirit," which presumably has ursine feature to its body, and unknown behavioral proclivities in the direction of bears.

HOW THE WEST WIND BECAME THE COMPANION OF THE WINGED GOD.
The Four Winds fixed the four directions on the world. They were told to fix the direction of the North Wind first, but Wazi deceived them so that they came first to the place of the West Wind and fixed that first. Thus the West Wind is the first in all things. When they came near the edge of the world, they were at the base of a high mountain and Wazi told them to go over the mountain the next day.
In the morning it was cloudy and when they were eating their morning meal they heard fearful noises on the mountain, but they could not see what was there because of the clouds. They were all much afraid and the East Wind wished to fly from the noises and the West Wind and North Wind feared to go up on the mountain. Then the South Wind offered to go first and the others could follow. If anything happened to harm him he promised to call to them and they could go back; but if he found no danger, he would call to them and they could come on. He went far ahead and when he came to the top of the mountain he saw a level space and near its center a large round lodge, open at the top and with no door. Close beside the lodge, was a great cedar tree and high in the tree was a huge nest made of dried bones. In the nest was an enormous egg. Someone in the lodge was drumming and a young one in the egg was pecking at the shell. These made the fearful noises that were heard below the mountain.
As Okaga cautiously approached the lodge, a voice bellowed to him and asked who it was that dared approach the lodge of the Winged God. He replied that the Great Spirit had sent him and his three brothers, the Four Winds, to fix the four directions on the world, and that his name was Okaga, the South Wind. The voice told him to pass on and do his work. Then the South Wind called to his brothers to come. He passed on over and down the mountain. When the three brothers reached the top of the mountain, they hesitated, but a voice in the lodge bellowed at them and told them to pass on and do their work. They went across the top, but when they came to the lodge, Eya stopped to look at it, but the other two hurried on and went down the mountain. Eya went around the lodge and then he went to the tree and looked at the nest and the egg.
Then he came back to the lodge and a voice within bellowed loudly and asked him what he wished. He asked who was in the lodge and a swallow flew up out of it. The West Wind looked at this bird, amazed and asked how it could bellow so loudly. The swallow told him that this was the lodge of the Winged God, that the nest in the tree was his nest, and the egg in the nest was his egg. Then Eya said he would like to see the Winged God. The swallow said that if one saw the real Winged God that one would be heyoka, and must forever act and speak in an anti-natural manner. But, if one saw Heyoka, then one need not be heyoka. Eya said he would like to see the real Winged God and also Heyoka. Immediately, there arose from the lodge a shapeless thing like a cloud of smoke, but with a huge beak like an eagle. In the beak were four rows of sharp teeth like those of a wolf. It had an eye and its glance was the lightning. Its voice was the thunder. It had four-jointed wings. It had no feet or legs, but eight toes, and on each toe were enormous talons like those of the eagle and each talon was as long as an eagle's wing. It seized the egg in its talons and shook it and the noise was the rolling thunder. As the West Wind looked at it, it became like a giant man and spoke to him. It said that because he was so brave and had looked at the Winged God without falling down or running away, that he should forever be the companion of Wakinyan, +he Winged, and that he should aid this God in cleansing the world of filthy and evil things. When the Heyoka said this he vanished. Then the sparrow said that from that time on, as long as mankind had ceremonies for the Gods, the West Wind should have precedence over all Gods, except one; that when he had done the work he was going to do, he must make his tipi on the mountain at the edge of the world and have that for his abiding place; that his direction would be the first established and the first recognized.
Then there was a feast ready to be served and Eya and the swallow partook of it. When the West Wind drank of the soup he slept. When he awoke he was with his brother and they were at the edge of the world. He commanded his brothers to erect a great pile of stones. When it was erected, the North Wind said that since this was the first direction it belonged to him; but Eya said that his direction should be where the shadows were shortest at midday, and because it was cloudy they could. not see shadows. Then he told his brothers each to choose a bird as his messenger. So the North Wind chose the magpie, the East Wind a crow, the South Wind a meadow lark, and Eya chose the swallow. Then Eya said that the messenger that would alight on the monument would decide whose direction it marked. Immediately, a swallow sat on the pile of stones. Yata bowed his head and covered it with his robe; he was ashamed because he knew that Eya would be first forever and have precedence over him. Since then, when the West Wind is coming with the Winged God, Wakinyan, the swallows fly high in circles.

East Wind
Mosiah 7:30 If my people shall sow filthiness, they shall reap the east wind, which bringeth immediate destruction.
This is an Old World cultural symbol. . . . The character of the directional winds was so consistent, varying not in nature but only in degree throughout the seasons, that they came to be viewed as messengers from God. The north wind is cold; the west wind coming from the Mediterranean Sea is moist; the south, warm; and the east, which crosses the sandy wastes of the Arabian Desert before reaching Palestine, can be violent and destructive. It was called "the wind of the wilderness" (Job 1:19; Jeremiah 13:24; cf. Genesis 41:6, 23, 27; Ezekiel 27:26; Psalms 78:26).
Doctrinal Commentary on the Book of Mormon
Genesis 41:1 And it came to pass at the end of two full years, that Pharaoh dreamed: and, behold, he stood by the river. 2And, behold, there came up out of the river seven well favoured kine and fatfleshed; and they fed in a meadow. 3 And, behold, seven other kine came up after them out of the river, ill favoured and leanfleshed; and stood by the other kine upon the brink of the river. 4And the ill favoured and leanfleshed kine did eat up the seven well favoured and fat kine. So Pharaoh awoke. 5 And he slept and dreamed the second time: and, behold, seven ears of corn came up upon one stalk, rank and good. 6 And, behold, seven thin ears and blasted with the east wind sprung up after them. 7 And the seven thin ears devoured the seven rank and full ears. And Pharaoh awoke, and, behold, it was a dream.
Exd 10:13 And Moses stretched forth his rod over the land of Egypt, and the LORD brought an east wind upon the land all that day, and all [that] night; [and] when it was morning, the east wind brought the locusts.
Exd 14:21 And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the LORD caused the sea to go [back] by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea dry [land], and the waters were divided.
Job 15:2 Should a wise man utter vain knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind?
Job 27:21 The east wind carrieth him away, and he departeth: and as a storm hurleth him out of his place.
Job 37:17 How thy garments are warm, when he quieteth the earth by the south wind?
Job 38:24 By what way is the light parted, which scattereth the east wind upon the earth?
Psalm 48:7 Thou breakest the ships of Tarshish with an east wind.
Psa 78:26 He caused an east wind to blow in the heaven: and by his power he brought in the south wind. 27 He rained flesh also upon them as dust, and feathered fowls like as the sand of the sea: :28 And he let [it] fall in the midst of their camp, round about their habitations. :29 So they did eat, and were well filled: for he gave them their own desire; 30 They were not estranged from their lust. But while their meat [was] yet in their mouths, 31 The wrath of God came upon them, and slew the fattest of them, and smote down the chosen [men] of Israel. 32 For all this they sinned still, and believed not for his wondrous works. 33 Therefore their days did he consume in vanity, and their years in trouble. 34 When he slew them, then they sought him: and they returned and enquired early after God. 35 And they remembered that God [was] their rock, and the high God their redeemer. 36 Nevertheless they did flatter him with their mouth, and they lied unto him with their tongues. 37 For their heart was not right with him, neither were they stedfast in his covenant. 38 But he, [being] full of compassion, forgave [their] iniquity, and destroyed [them] not: yea, many a time turned he his anger away, and did not stir up all his wrath. 39 For he remembered that they [were but] flesh; a wind that passeth away, and cometh not again. 40 How oft did they provoke him in the wilderness, [and] grieve him in the desert! :41 Yea, they turned back and tempted God, and limited the Holy One of Israel. :42 They remembered not his hand, [nor] the day when he delivered them from the enemy. 43 How he had wrought his signs in Egypt, and his wonders in the field of Zoan: :44 And had turned their rivers into blood; and their floods, that they could not drink. :45 He sent divers sorts of flies among them, which devoured them; and frogs, which destroyed them. :46 He gave also their increase unto the caterpillar, and their labour unto the locust. :47 He destroyed their vines with hail, and their sycamore trees with frost. 48 He gave up their cattle also to the hail, and their flocks to hot thunderbolts. 49 He cast upon them the fierceness of his anger, wrath, and indignation, and trouble, by sending evil angels [among them]. 50 He made a way to his anger; he spared not their soul from death, but gave their life over to the pestilence; 51 And smote all the firstborn in Egypt; the chief of [their] strength in the tabernacles of Ham: 52 But made his own people to go forth like sheep, and guided them in the wilderness like a flock. 53 And he led them on safely, so that they feared not: but the sea overwhelmed their enemies. 54 And he brought them to the border of his sanctuary, [even to] this mountain, [which] his right hand had purchased. 55 He cast out the heathen also before them, and divided them an inheritance by line, and made the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tents. 56 Yet they tempted and provoked the most high God, and kept not his testimonies: 57 But turned back, and dealt unfaithfully like their fathers: they were turned aside like a deceitful bow. 58 For they provoked him to anger with their high places, and moved him to jealousy with their graven images. 59 When God heard [this], he was wroth, and greatly abhorred Israel: 60 So that he forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh, the tent [which] he placed among men; 61 And delivered his strength into captivity, and his glory into the enemy's hand. 62 He gave his people over also unto the sword; and was wroth with his inheritance. :63 The fire consumed their young men; and their maidens were not given to marriage. 64 Their priests fell by the sword; and their widows made no lamentation. 65 Then the Lord awaked as one out of sleep, [and] like a mighty man that shouteth by reason of wine. 66 And he smote his enemies in the hinder parts: he put them to a perpetual reproach. 67 Moreover he refused the tabernacle of Joseph, and chose not the tribe of Ephraim: 68 But chose the tribe of Judah, the mount Zion which he loved. 69 And he built his sanctuary like high [palaces], like the earth which he hath established for ever. 70 He chose David also his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds: 71 From following the ewes great with young he brought him to feed Jacob his people, and Israel his inheritance. 72 So he fed them according to the integrity of his heart; and guided them by the skilfulness of his hands.
Isaiah 27:8 In measure, when it shooteth forth, thou wilt debate with it: he stayeth his rough wind in the day of the east wind.
Jeremiah 4: 11 At that time shall it be said to this people and to Jerusalem, A dry wind of the high places in the wilderness toward the daughter of my people, not to fan, nor to cleanse, 12 Even a full wind from those places shall come unto me: now also will I give sentence against them. 13 Behold, he shall come up as clouds, and his chariots shall be as a whirlwind: his horses are swifter than eagles. Woe unto us! for we are spoiled. 14 O Jerusalem, wash thine heart from wickedness, that thou mayest be saved. How long shall thy vain thoughts lodge within thee? 15 For a voice declareth from Dan, and publisheth affliction from mount Ephraim. 16 Make ye mention to the nations; behold, publish against Jerusalem, that watchers come from a far country, and give out their voice against the cities of Judah. 17 As keepers of a field, are they against her round about; because she hath been rebellious against me, saith the LORD. .18 Thy way and thy doings have procured these things unto thee; this is thy wickedness, because it is bitter, because it reacheth unto thine heart.

Mat 8:26 And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm.
Jeremiah 18: 15 Because my people hath forgotten me, they have burned incense to vanity, and they have caused them to stumble in their ways from the ancient paths, to walk in paths, in a way not cast up; 16 To make their land desolate, and a perpetual hissing; every one that passeth thereby shall be astonished, and wag his head. 17 I will scatter them as with an east wind before the enemy; I will shew them the back, and not the face, in the day of their calamity.
NOTE: 17 - East wind The area east of Palestine was desert and winds from that direction were hot and dry. Not good for crops. Invading armies would avoid the desert and travel where there were some rivers passing by Damascus and coming south into Palestine
