OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE n the days of the conquest of Central America, and near the place where Mexico City would one-day stand, there was a small village. Now it came to pass that the Bishop of the village wanted to build a cathedral in honor of the Virgin Mary, but neither the Bishop nor the other leaders knew where the site of the cathedral should be. Most of the villagers were the native inhabitants of Central America, they lived in poverty and were treated little better than slaves. But one among them, who was called Juan Diego, was a very devout man and served God to the best of his abilities. One day while working in the fields, he met a beautiful lady who seemed to have a warmth and radiance about her. When he came closer, she spoke to him and said, "Go to the Bishop and tell him that I wish the church he would dedicate to me to be built on this spot." Bowing respectfully, Juan Diego immediately set off to see the Bishop, but being busy, the Bishop was only able to see him after several days. After Juan was finally ushered into the Bishops presence, he proceeded to describe what he had seen and tell the Bishop the message that was given to him. The Bishop thought that Juan was crazy and had him thrown out. Juan Diego returned to the spot where he had met the lady and there she appeared to him a second time. "Go again to the Bishop and tell him that I wish the church be built on this spot," she spoke. Juan again returned and asked for an audience with the Bishop. This time after a much longer wait he was again brought before the Bishop. After Juan had recounted his second meeting with the lady, the Bishop said, If it is the Virgin, who speaks with you, then bring me some proof of this!" For the third time Juan returned to the spot where he had met the Virgin, and again she appeared to him. He proceeded to tell her that the Bishop wanted some proof from him to show that he really spoke to her. Now at this time there were no roses in the New World, and it was the middle of December. But when the Virgin placed her hand on the earth, roses suddenly grew and bloomed in moments. Juan took the roses and piled them in the front of his tabard, and rushed off to the Bishop. The "Miracle of the Roses" is the culminating scene of this story is when Juan Diego comes into the Bishops presence bearing the proof from the Virgin. He lets go of his tabard showering the astonished Bishop with roses, only to find that the symbol of the Madonna is now indelibly marked on the front of his tabard. His tabard can still be seen in the cathedral that was built to honor the Virgin. Though the tabard which was made of cactus cloth should have disintegrated many years ago, it remains in the same condition as the day Juan Diego wore it, and the picture of the Virgin Mary remains on the cloth the same as that day the Bishop observed it. ST. ISABEL OF HUNGARY Elizabeth,
or Isabel, daughter of King Peter III of Aragon, was named after her
great-aunt, Elizabeth
of Hungary, but she is known in Portugal by the Spanish form of that
name, Isabela. She was the
wife of King Dinis of Portugal. She was canonized in 1625, although some records list 1626. She is reputed to have founded charities and hospitals. In Portugal she is remembered for the miracle of the roses in which she was taking bread (or coins) to the poor only to be asked by her less than generous husband what she was carrying. The bread (or coins) was miraculously transformed into roses, thereby appeasing her spouse. In
art, Saint Elizabeth is depicted carrying roses in her lap in winter;
crowned with roses; or as a Franciscan tertiary nun, sometimes with a
beggar near her or with a rose or jug in her hand. She
is easily confused with Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, who is also a queen
and Franciscan tertiary. Elizabeth is venerated in Zaragoza and
especially Portugal and is invoked in time of war.

THE APPARITIONS OF FATIMA The primary apparitions at Fatima, Portugal occurred on the 13ths of six successive months in 1917. The overriding message of Fatima was for all mankind to return to God, to make reparation for sins and to pray the Rosary for Peace. The Catholic Church investigated the Fatima apparitions and, in 1930, declared them "worthy of credence." Millions of pilgrims journey to Fatima each year to give honor to Our Lady of Fatima by praying to God for peace, by worshiping Our Lord, her Son, Jesus, and by celebrating in the Mass His great love for us. The apparitions of the Blessed Mother at Fatima were preceded by three apparitions by an angel to three peasant children in 1916. In 1917 the Blessed Mother appeared six times to the three young peasant children. At the time of the apparitions, the devastating First World War was still being fought in Europe. On May 13th of 1917 in Fatima, Portugal, the Blessed Mother appeared and spoke to the three children as they tended their sheep. The three children were: Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta who were 10, 9 and 7 years old respectively
The Blessed Mother returned again each month on the 13th from June to October. The children endured disbelief from their family and pastor, were ridiculed and even spat upon by some neighbors and were jailed and threaten with death by the atheistic, socialistic, civil authorities. Lucia was sternly treated by her strict, unbelieving mother. Yet, in spite of an overwhelming and intimidating situation, they did not change their testimony of the apparitions of the Blessed Mother. Each month, increasing numbers of people came to be with the children. At the July apparition the children asked the Blessed Mother to give a sign to make people believe the apparitions. The Blessed Mother promised to them a great public miracle in October. On October 13, 1917, the crowds had increased to 70,000. Many newspaper reporters and photographers were there to record the miracle or prove the children were lying. The crowd was standing in the relentless, pouring rain with mud up to their ankles. Many were praying the Rosary as the Blessed Mother made her final appearance to the children and told them: "I am the Lady of the Rosary, I have come to warn the faithful to amend their lives and ask for pardon for their sins. They must not offend Our Lord any more, for He is already too grievously offended by the sins of men. People must say the Rosary. Let them continue saying it everyday. As Our Lady was about to leave she pointed to the sun. The rain had stopped and the clouds parted and the sun began to whirl in the sky, scattering rays of multicolored light lighting up the entire countryside. The sun whirled for three minutes, stopped and, then, resumed again a second and third time lasting a total of twelve minutes. The sun spun faster each time and at the end seemed to tear itself from the sky and began plunging to earth. Many in the crowd thought that it was the end of the world! The crowd was on their knees, terrified, asking pardon for their sins. Just then the miracle ended, the sun returned to its normal position and the rain soaked earth and people's clothes were now dry. There were many reported healings. The Portugal newspaper reporters gave long and detailed accounts but newspapers in most other countries ignored the story . To underscore the urgency and truth of her messages, in July of 1917, Our Lady foretold the following future worldwide events that would occur if people do not stop offending God: The Messages of Fatima: In the following paragraphs, the angel's and Our Lady's messages at Fatima are presented in chronological order. The Angel's Visits of 1916 Spring of 1916: An angel appeared to the three children as they were pasturing their sheep. The angel said, "Fear not, I am the Angel of Peace. Pray with me. The angel knelt on the ground and recited this prayer three times as the chil dren repeated it after him, "O my God, I believe, I adore, I hope and I love Thee. I ask pardon for those who do not believe, do not adore, do not hope and do not love Thee. Summer of 1916: The angel appeared again and said, "Pray, Pray a great deal. The Hearts of Jesus and Mary have merciful designs on you. Offer prayers and sacrifices continually to the Most High. Make everything you do a sacrifice, and offer it as an act of reparation for the sins by which God is offended, and as a petition for the conversion of sinners. Bring peace to our country in this way ... I am the Guardian Angel of Portugal. Accept and bear with submission all the sufferings the Lord will send you. Fall of 1916: The angel appeared to the children and prostrated himself on the ground before a vision of a chalice and host and said, "Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, I adore Thee profoundly. I offer Thee the most precious Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ, present in all the Tabernacles of the world, in reparation for the outrages, sacrileges and indifferences whereby He is offended. And through the infinite merits of His most Sacred Heart and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I beg of Thee the conversion of poor sinners. The Messages of 1917 Sunday, May 13, 1917: Accompanied by two bright flashes of light, Our Lady appeared in a radiant light to the children and said, "Do not be afraid. I will do you no harm. Lucia asked, "Where are you from? Our Lady responded, "I am from Heaven. Lucia asked, "What do you want of us? Our Lady responded, "I came to ask you to come here on the thirteenth day for six months at this same time, and then I will tell you who I am and what I want. And afterwards, I will return here a seventh time. Lucia asked, "Will I go to Heaven? Our Lady said, "Yes, you will. Lucia asked, "And Jacinta? Our Lady responded, "She also. Lucia asked, "And Francisco? Will he go to Heaven too? Our Lady said, "Yes, but first he must say many rosaries. Lucia then asked of the fate of two girls who had recently died. Our Lady told her one was already in Heaven and that the other would be "in Purgatory until the end of the world. Our Lady then asked, "Would you like to offer yourselves to God to accept all the sufferings which He may send to you in reparation for the countless sins by which He is offended and in supplication for the conversion of sinners? Lucia said yes for all three. Our Lady then said, "Then you will have much to suffer, but the grace of God will be your comfort. The children were stirred deep in their spirits and then cried out, "O Most Holy Trinity I adore Thee. My God, my God, I love Thee in the Most Blessed Sacrament. Our Lady then asked the children to recite the Rosary every day and then rose in a cloud into the sky. Wednesday, June 13, 1917: Our Lady appears to the children. A few dozen curious people are with the children. The crowd sees only a small white cloud hovering over the shrub where Our Lady is appearing to the children. Lucia said, "My Lady, what do you want of me? Our Lady responded, "I want you to come on the thirteenth day of next month and to pray the Rosary every day and I want you to learn to read. Lucia asked for the cure of a sick person. Our Lady said, "If she is converted, she will be cured within a year. Lucia said, "I want you to take us to Heaven. Our Lady replied, "Yes, I will take Francisco and Jacinta soon, but you must remain on earth for some time. Jesus wishes to use you to make me better known and loved. He wishes to establish in the world devotion to my Immaculate Heart. Lucia said, "Must I stay here all alone? Our Lady responded, "No, my child, and would that make you suffer? Do not be disheartened. My Immaculate Heart will never abandon you, but will be your refuge and the way that will lead you to God. Our Lady opened her hands and the children were overwhelmed in their spirits by God's presence and goodness. Our Lady then rose into the sky. The crowd saw the little cloud of light drift away and also saw that the leaves of the scrub were bent as if Our Lady's garments had trailed over them. Saturday, July 13, 1917: Some 5,000 people joined the children in the field that day. As the children were praying the Rosary, a little white cloud descended. Our Lady appeared only to the children but bystanders sensed that something unusual was taking place. Seeing Our Lady, Lucia asked, "What do you want of me? Our Lady responded, "I want you to come on the thirteenth day of next month and to continue to pray the Rosary every day in honor of Our Lady of the Rosary, in order to obtain peace for the world and the end of the war for she alone can help. Lucia said, "I would like to ask who you are and to perform a miracle so that people will believe that you are appearing to us. Our Lady replied, "Continue to come here every month. In October I will tell you who I am and what I want. And I will perform a miracle so that everyone may see and believe. Lucia then submitted petitions and prayer requests for Our Lady to present to God. Our Lady gave some responses to Lucia. Lucia then said, "Yes, she wants people to recite the Rosary. People must recite the Rosary. Our Lady gravely said, "Sacrifice yourselves for sinners and say often, especially when you make some sacrifice, O my Jesus, this is for love of You, for the conversion of sinners, and in reparation for the offenses committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary. At this point the children see a terrifying vision of Hell. [This vision was so real that the children later made severe sacrifices for the salvation of sinners.] Our Lady responded to the vision with sadness and tenderness, "You saw Hell where the souls of poor sinners go. In order to save them, God wishes to establish in the world devotion to my Immaculate Heart. If people do what I ask, many souls will be saved and there will be peace. "The war is going to end. But if people do not stop offending God, another, even worse one will begin in the reign of Pius XI. When you shall see a night illuminated by an unknown light know that this is the great sign that God gives you that He is going to punish the world for its many crimes by means of war, hunger, and persecution of the Church and the Holy Father. To prevent it, I shall come to ask for the consecration of Russia to my Immaculate Heart and the Communion of reparation on the first Saturdays. "If people attend to my requests, Russia will be converted and the world will have peace. If not, she [Russia] will scatter her errors throughout the world, provoking wars and persecutions of the Church. The good will be martyred, the Holy Father will have much to suffer, and various nations will be destroyed. "In the end my Immaculate Heart will triumph. The Holy Father will consecrate Russia to me; it will be converted, and a certain period of peace will be granted to the world. In Portugal the dogmas of the Faith will always be kept [at this point Lucia and Jacinta are given the Third Secret that was eventually given to the Pope but has yet to be publicly revealed]. "Do not tell this to anyone. Francisco ... yes, you may tell him [Lucia and Jacinta both saw and heard Our Lady but Francisco only saw the apparitions]. "When you say the Rosary, say after each mystery: O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of Hell and lead all souls to Heaven, especially those most in need. After a pause, Lucia asked, "Do you want anything more of me? Our Lady replied, "No, today I want nothing else of you. Lucia then stood and pointing to the sky said, "There she goes! There she goes!. Now you can't see her anymore. Monday, August 13, 1917: A crowd of around 15,000 had gathered in the field when they heard that the children were just kidnapped by the civil authorities. The crowd was getting angry about the news, and then suddenly there was a loud, frightful clap of thunder and a blinding flash of light and then a small, brilliant white cloud descend to where the children met Our Lady in the previous apparitions. The cloud remained for a few minutes and then rose to the heavens. A supernatural light remained. There was also a heavenly fragrance of flowers that people experienced. Our Lady had made her presence known even though the children could not be there. The children were released later that day after enduring hostile treatment and threats of death by the civil authorities. Sunday, August 19, 1917: Our Lady appeared to the children while they were pasturing their sheep. She urged the children to continue coming on the thirteenth of the month and to pray the Rosary every day. She repeated her promise of the miracle on October 13th but that it would be "less great because of the treatment of the children. Our Lady further said, "Pray, pray a great deal and make many sacrifices for many souls go to Hell because they have no one to make sacrifices and to pray for them. She also said that in October, "St. Joseph too will come with the Holy Child to bring peace to the world. Our Lord will also come to bless the people. Our Lady of the Rosary and Our Lady of Sorrows will come too. The vision then rose in a cloud of light and disappeared. Thursday, September 13, 1917: The crowd has now grown to more than 30,000. Many people see the small white cloud descend to the children. They also saw what looked like a rain of colorful rose petals which vanished when reaching the ground. Lucia cried out, "You must pray! and thousands of pilgrims fell to their knees praying. Lucia asked Our Lady, "What do you want of me? Our Lady replied, "Continue to pray the Rosary every day in order to obtain the end of the war. In October Our Lord will come, and Our Lady of Sorrows and of Mount Carmel and St. Joseph with the Child Jesus to bless the world. God is pleased with your sacrifices, but He does not want you to sleep with the rope on; wear it only during the day. Lucia said, "People have begged me to ask you many things. The cure of some sick persons, of a deaf mute ... Our Lady replied, "Some I will cure, others not. In October I shall perform a miracle so that everyone may believe. Lucia then rose and said, "If you wish to see her look in that direction." People could see the small white cloud ascending into the sky. Saturday, October 13, 1917: More than 70,000 people, both believers and critics, had gathered in the field in terrible rainy weather. Many newspaper reporters and photographers were there to record the miracle or prove the children were lying. The crowd was standing in the relentless, pouring rain with mud up to their ankles. Many were praying the Rosary. Suddenly Lucia cried out, "Put down your umbrellas everyone! To Jacinta and Francisco she said, "Kneel down. Our Lady is coming! I have seen the flash! Lucia then said to Our Lady, "What do you want of me? Our Lady replied, "I am the Lady of the Rosary, I have come to warn the faithful to amend their lives and ask for pardon for their sins. They must not offend Our Lord any more, for He is already too grievously offended by the sins of men. People must say the Rosary. Let them continue saying it everyday. She also said, "I would like a chapel built here in my honor. She added that "the war will end soon and that the soldiers would not be long in returning to their homes. As Our Lady was about to leave she pointed to the sun and Lucia cried out, "Look at the sun! The rain had stopped and the black clouds parted and the sun began to whirl in the sky, scattering rays of multicolored light and lighting up the entire countryside. The sun whirled for three minutes, stopped and, then, resumed again a second and third time lasting a total of twelve minutes. The sun spun faster each time and at the end seemed to tear itself from the sky and began plunging to earth. The crowd was on their knees, terrified, asking pardon for their sins fearing that the end of the world was at hand. At the last moment the sun halted its descent and returned to its normal position. The miracle ended with the rain soaked earth and people's clothes now being completely dry. There were many reported healings. The miracle was seen over a 600 square mile area. The Portugal newspaper reporters gave long and detailed accounts but newspapers in most other countries ignored the story. As the crowd was witnessing the miracle of the sun, the children saw visions of the Holy Family, Jesus, Joseph and Mary. They also saw Our Lord carrying His cross with His Mother, Our Lady of Sorrows. Lucia also saw Our Lady of Mount Carmel who signifies the triumph over suffering. After the Miracle of the Sun In December of 1918, Francisco became sick with Spanish influenza. Soon afterwards, Jacinta also became ill with influenza and later pleurisy. Francisco willingly accepted his suffering and offered it for the conversion of lost souls. He died on April 4, 1919. He had grown so much spiritually since the first apparition. Jacinta also willingly accepted her suffering. She still vividly remembered the suffering souls in Hell in the vision of July 13, 1917 and was willing to endure much suffering to save souls. Jacinta's health deteriorated throughout 1919. At the end of that year she was moved to a hospital in Lisbon. Jacinta died in Lisbon on February 20, 1920. In 1921 Lucia left Fatima to attend a convent school in Vilar were she could grow up as a normal child, insulated from all the attention created by the apparitions. In 1925 she entered the Order of St. Dorothy at Tuy, Spain. Sister Lucia remains in a convent to this day. Additional Visions of Jacinta Our Lady appeared to Jacinta several times between December 1919 and February 1920. Our Lady told her many things including: "The sins of the world are very great ... If men only knew what eternity is, they would do everything in their power to change their lives. "You must pray much for sinners and priests and religious. "Priests must be pure, very pure. They should not busy themselves with anything except what concerns the Church and souls. The disobedience of priests and religious to their superiors and to the Holy Father gravely displeases Our Lord. "Fly from riches and luxury; love poverty and silence; have charity, even for bad people. "More souls go to Hell because of sins of the flesh than for any other reason. "Certain fashions will be introduced that will offend Our Lord very much. "The Mother of God wants more virgin souls bound by the vow of chastity. "Woe to women wanting in modesty. "Confession is a sacrament of mercy and we must confess with joy and trust. "Many marriages are not of God and do not please Our Lord. "Let men avoid greed, lies, envy, blasphemy, impurity. "Never speak ill of anyone. Never complain or murmur. Be very patient, for patience leads us to Heaven. "Our Lady can no longer uphold the arm of her Divine Son which will strike the world. If people amend their lives, Our Lord will even now save the world, but if they do not, punishment will come. "If the government of a country leaves the Church in peace and gives liberty to our Holy Religion, it will be blessed by God. "Tell everybody that God gives graces through the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Tell them to ask graces from her, and that the Heart of Jesus wishes to be venerated together with the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Ask them to plead for peace from the Immaculate Heart of Mary, for the Lord has confided the peace of the world to her. Additional Visions of Lucia December 10, 1925: The Blessed Mother and the Christ Child appeared to Lucia in the convent chapel. The Christ Child spoke first, "Have compassion on the heart of your Most Holy Mother, covered with thorns, with which ungrateful men pierce it at every moment, and there is no one to make an act of reparation to remove them. Our Lady then said, "Look my daughter, at my Heart, surrounded with thorns with which ungrateful men pierce me at every moment by their blasphemies and ingratitude. You at least try to console me and say that I promise to assist at the hour of death, with the graces necessary for salvation, all those who, on the first Saturday of five consecutive months, shall confess, receive Holy Communion, recite five decades of the Rosary, and keep me company for fifteen minutes while meditating on the fifteen mysteries of the Rosary, with the intention of making reparation to me. February 15, 1926: While Lucia was attending to her daily chores, the Child Jesus appeared and said, "And have you spread through the world what our heavenly Mother requested of you? Lucia replied, "My Jesus, You know very well what my confessor said to me in the letter I read to You. He told me that it was necessary for this vision to be repeated, for further happenings to prove its credibility, and he added that Mother Superior, on her own, could do nothing to propagate this devotion. Jesus replied, "It is true that your Superior alone can do nothing, but with My grace she can do all. It is enough that your confessor gives you permission and that your Superior speak of it, for it to be believed, even without people knowing to whom it has been revealed. Lucia replied, "But my confessor said in the letter that this devotion is not lacking in the world, because there are many souls who receive You on the First Saturdays, in honor of Our Lady and of the fifteen Mysteries of the Rosary. Jesus replied, "It is true My daughter, that many souls begin the First Saturdays, but few finish them, and those who do complete them do so in order to receive the graces that are promised thereby. It would please Me more if they did Five with fervor and with the intention of making reparation to the Heart of your heavenly Mother, than if they did Fifteen, in a tepid and indifferent manner.... Lucia placed before Jesus the difficulty that some people had about confessing on Saturdays, and asked that if it might be valid to go to confession within eight days. Jesus replied, "Yes, and it could be longer still, provided that, when they receive Me, they are in the state of grace and have the intention of making reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Lucia asked, "My Jesus, what about those who forget to make this intention? Jesus replied, "They can do so at their next confession, taking advantage of the first opportunity to go to confession. December 17, 1927: In prayer at Pontevedra, Spain, Lucia asked Jesus for direction concerning revealing the secrets of Our Lady's apparitions, particularly the December 10, 1925 apparition concerning the devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. By means of an inner locution, Jesus told her, "My daughter, write what they... [her spiritual director] ... ask of you. Write also all that the most holy Virgin revealed to you in the Apparition in which she spoke of this devotion. As for the remainder of the Secret, continue to keep silence. June 13, 1929: While in prayer in the chapel, Lucia had a very powerful and enlightening vision of the Most Holy Trinity. Our Lady of Fatima was part of that vision. Lucia wrote of this vision, "Suddenly the whole chapel was illuminated by a supernatural light, and above the alter appeared a cross of light, reaching to the ceiling. In a brighter light on the upper part of the cross, could be seen the face of a man and his body as far as the waist; upon his breast was a dove of light; nailed to the cross was the body of another man. A little below the waist, I could see a chalice and a large host suspended in the air, on to which drops of blood were failing from the face of Jesus Crucified and from the wound in His side. These drops ran down on to the host and fell into the chalice. Beneath the right arm of the cross was Our Lady and in her hand was her Immaculate Heart. (It was Our Lady of Fatima, with her Immaculate Heart in her left hand, without sword or roses, but with a crown of thorns and flames). Under the left arm of the cross, large letters, as if of crystal clear water which ran down upon the alter, formed the words; Grace and Mercy. Lucia further wrote, "I understood that it was the Mystery of the Most Holy Trinity which was shown to me, and I received insights about this mystery which I am not permitted to reveal. Our Lady then said, "The moment has come in which God asks the Holy Father, in union with all the bishops of the world, to make the consecration of Russia to my Immaculate Heart, promising to save it by this means. There are so many souls whom the Justice of God condemns for sins committed against me, that I have come to ask reparation: sacrifice yourself for this intention and pray. Our Lord later said, "They did not wish to heed My request. Like the King of France, they will regret it and then do it, but it will be late. Russia will already have spread her errors throughout the world, provoking wars and persecutions against the Church. The Holy Father will have much to suffer. Undated, 1933: Our Lord communicated to Lucia that He was displeased that His requests had not been attended to. Undated but prior to May 18, 1936: In response to Lucia's question as to why He would not convert Russia without the Holy Father making the consecration, Our Lord replied, "Because I want My whole Church to acknowledge that consecration as a triumph of the Immaculate Heart of Mary so that it may extend its cult later on and put the devotion of the Immaculate Heart besides the devotion to My Sacred Heart. Lucia answered, "But my God, the Holy Father probably will not believe me unless You Yourself move him with a special inspiration. Our Lord answered, "The Holy
Father, pray much for the Holy Father. He will do it, but it will be late.
Nevertheless, the Immaculate Heart of Mary will save Russia. It has been

THE THIRD SECRET
But Mary foresaw that a "night illuminated by an unknown light" would precede a "worse war" in which "The good will be martyred" and "The Holy Father will have much to suffer." On January 25, 1938, a remarkable display of aurora borealis was visible across Europe, the year before World War II began. The second secret involved the future of Russia. Lucia says Mary revealed that Russia would "spread her errors throughout the world, promoting wars," and that "Various nations will be annihilated." Many believe this is a direct prophecy of the spread of communism. "I shall come to ask for the consecration of Russia to My Immaculate Heart," continues the account of Mary's revelation. "If people attend to My requests, Russia will be converted and the world will have peace." Some interpret Pope John Paul II's 1984 consecration of Russia as fulfilling the prophecy, and paving the way for the subsequent collapse of the Soviet Union as the "conversion" of Russia. Lucia wrote down the third secret, sealed it, and entrusted it to Portugal's Bishop of Leiria, with instructions that it was not to be read until 1960. The Bishop turned the envelope over to the Vatican. Pope John XXIII reportedly opened the envelope when 1960 arrived, but refused to divulge its contents, saying, "This prophecy does not relate to my time." Pope John Paul II is said to have also read it, and refuses to reveal it on the grounds that its true spiritual message has been obscured by sensationalism. May 14, 2000 - NY Times - Portugal Pope John Paul II spoke yesterday with Lucia de Santos, 93, a Carmelite nun, who believers say was the main recipient of prophecies from the Virgin Mary that included the spread, and then the collapse, of Communism. The Vatican today disclosed the so-called third secret of Fαtima, which for decades has kept this shrine of the Virgin Mary at the center of conspiracy theories and doomsday cults. The Vatican described the secret as a vision of the 1981 assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II. Cardinal Angelo Sodano, the Vatican secretary of state, explained that the one concealed part of the prophecies said to have been revealed to three Portuguese shepherd children by an apparition of the Virgin in 1917 was a vision of an attempt to kill a pope. The "bishop clothed in white," who is the pope, "makes his way with great effort toward the cross amid the corpses of those who were martyred," Cardinal Sodano said as he described what he called an interpretation of the vision to 600,000 pilgrims gathered at the sanctuary where John Paul II had just beatified two of the shepherd children, Francisco and Jacinta Marto, and thanked the Virgin for saving his life on May 13, 1981. "He too falls to the ground, apparently dead, under a burst of gunfire," the cardinal said. Mehmet Ali Agca, a Turkish gunman, shot the pope as John Paul drove through a crowd in St. Peter's Square in 1981 on the anniversary of the 1917 apparition. Among the explanations the gunman gave prosecutors at a trial in 1985 was that his attempt was "connected to the third secret of the Madonna of Fatima." The cardinal's announcement was an effort by the Vatican to put an end to the kind of fevered speculation that has at times overshadowed the shrine's spiritual importance to hundreds of millions of Catholics. Versions of the secret, broadcast on hundreds of Web sites (usually under headlines like, "Third Secret Revealed!") range from worldwide nuclear annihilation to deep rifts in the Roman Catholic Church that lead to rival papacies. The following are excerpts of the statement by Secretary of State Cardinal Angelo Sodano revealing the so-called third secret of Fatima: "On the solemn occasion of his visit to Fatima, His Holiness has directed me to make an announcement to you. As you know, the purpose of his visit to Fatima has been to beatify the two "little shepherds." Nevertheless, he also wishes his pilgrimage to be a renewed gesture of gratitude to Our Lady for her protection during these years of his papacy. This protection seems also to be linked to the so-called "third part" of the secret of Fatima. "That text contains a prophetic vision similar to those found in the sacred scripture, which do not describe with photographic clarity the details of future events, but rather synthesize and condense against a unified background events spread out over time in a succession and a duration which are not specified. As a result, the text must be interpreted in a symbolic key. "The vision of Fatima concerns above all the war waged by atheist systems against the Church and Christians, and it describes the immense suffering endured by the witnesses to the faith in the last century of the second millennium. It is an interminable Way of the Cross led by the Popes of the 20th century. "According to the interpretation of the "little shepherds," which was also recently confirmed by Sister Lucia, the "Bishop clothed in white" who prays for all the faithful is the Pope. As he makes his way with great effort towards the cross amid the corpses of those who were martyred (bishops, priests, religious men and women and many lay persons), he too falls to the ground, apparently dead, under a burst of gunfire. "After the assassination attempt of 13 May, 1981, it appeared evident to His Holiness that it was a "motherly hand which guided the bullet's path," enabling the "dying Pope" to halt "at the threshold of death." On the occasion of a visit to Rome by the then Bishop of Leiria-Fatima, the Pope decided to give him the bullet which had remained in the jeep after the assassination attempt, so that it might be kept in the shrine. At the behest of the bishop, the bullet was later set in the crown of the statue of Our Lady of Fatima. "The successive events of 1989 led, both in the Soviet Union and in a number of countries of Eastern Europe, to the fall of the Communist regime which promoted atheism. For this too His Holiness offers heartfelt thanks to the Most Holy Virgin. In other parts of the world, however, attacks against the Church and against Christians, together with the burden of suffering which they involve, tragically continue. Even if the events to which the third part of the Secret of Fatima refers now seem part of the past, Our Lady's call to conversion and penance, issued at the beginning of the 20th century, remains timely and urgent today. "In order that the faithful may better receive the message of Our Lady of Fatima, the Pope has charged the Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith with the making public the third part of the secret, after the preparation of an appropriate commentary." Fatima fanatics have held hunger strikes - one even hijacked a plane - to try to force the Vatican to disclose the secret. During John Paul's first visit to the shrine in 1982, on the first anniversary of the assassination attempt, a knife-wielding Spanish priest tried to kill the pope, but was wrestled to the ground by security officers. John Paul has always credited the Virgin of Fatima with saving his life. After he visited the shrine in 1982 to give thanks for his survival, a bullet extracted from his body was placed alongside diamonds in a gold crown worn by a statue of the Virgin. In 1991, on the 10th anniversary of the attack, he returned again to give thanks for his life as well as for the collapse of Communism, which believers say the Virgin of Fatima also predicted in 1917. The cardinal said the secret in its entirety would soon be published by the Vatican "after the preparation of an appropriate commentary." The pope did refer to the prophecies today, speaking of "Fαtima, where these times of tribulation were foretold," but he made no mention of the "third secret." Instead, he once again gave thanks "for the goodness of God toward me, when severely struck on that May 13, 1981, I was rescued from death." The pope first learned of the secret a few days after he was elected in 1978, the Vatican said. He did not announce it himself today, said his spokesman, Dr. Joaquνn Navarro-Valls, because he was "personally involved." Vatican officials did not say why the secret was not revealed sooner after the assassination attempt in 1981. In a new tribute at a prayer service at the shrine on Friday night, the pope donated to the shrine the ring given to him by Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski, the late primate of Poland. Cardinal Wyszynski, whose long fight against Communism in Poland inspired the present pope and millions of their countrymen, told John Paul after his election in 1978 that he would lead the church into the new millennium. Dr. Navarro-Valls dismissed speculation that the gift was a signal that the pope was set to resign as "150 percent wrong." He described the ring as "one of the pope's most precious possessions," given as an offer of thanks. The fact that the pope put the two dead witnesses to the Virgin's apparitions on the path of sainthood today was another sign of his devotion to Fαtima. The two, Francisco and Jacinta Marto, are the first children ever beatified by the Roman Catholic Church who were not martyrs. Beatification, which is bestowed only on the dead, is the penultimate step before sainthood. Before the ceremony, the pope, who turns 80 on Thursday, met privately inside the basilica near the children's tombs with the third surviving witness to the apparition, Lucia de Jesus dos Santos, 93, a Carmelite nun, who believers say was the main recipient of prophecies from the Virgin about 20th century debacles. The Vatican said that it had consulted with Sister Lucia before making its announcement today. The Virgin of Fαtima was said to have appeared before three shepherd children on May 13, 1917, and on five later occasions. Lucia was 10. Her cousins, Francisco and Jacinta, who were 8 and 7, died in the influenza pandemic a few years later. Believers say two of the Fαtima secrets were revealed in writing by Lucia in the 1940's. The third secret was put in a sealed envelope and sent to Rome more than 40 years ago. Interpretations of the secrets vary, but generally believers think that the first foretold the end of World War I and the start of World War II, and that the other predicted the spread, then the collapse of Communism and the conversion of Russia. The latter prophecy, which came with a request that the church consecrate Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, made Fatima an ideological shrine for anti-Communists during the cold war. John Paul II finally consecrated the whole world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary in 1984. Fatima, like the rest of Portugal, also had fascist links during World War II, when Portugal was neutral under the right-wing dictatorship of Antσnio Salazar but traded with the Nazi regime. This month, the rector of the sancutary, Luciano Guerra, confirmed news reports that in 1976 Fαtima received Nazi gold bars bearing the Third Reich insignia looted from Jews during the war, and sold them in 1982 and 1986 to finance construction at the sanctuary. Today, many pilgrims, some wearing baseball hats emblazoned with the names of Jacinta and Francisco, cheered after Cardinal Sodano delivered his message. "It's wonderful that the pope knew the prophecy and survived it," said Lucia Dias, 31, a lawyer from Sintra, who added that she had once believed that the third secret was a prophecy of World War III. She made her own prediction about the pope: "I think now he will die soon." Until today, besides John Paul and Sister Lucia, the only other living person believed to be privy to the secret was Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, the head of the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. In 1996, he told Portugal's main Catholic radio station that there was nothing worrisome in the message, and that it remained secret because the Vatican wanted to avoid "confusing religious prophecy with sensationalism." Whether today's announcement will appease some of the more fanatical devotees of the "third secret" mystery is unclear. Some of those believers, who choose to view the reforms of the Second Vatican Council as heresies predicted by the Virgin of Fatima, may dismiss the Vatican's announcement as a cover-up. Even some who attended Mass today seemed let down. "What they said all happened in the past," Julio Estela, 33, a car salesman from northern Portugal, said after the cardinal spoke. "This isn't a prediction. It's disappointing. I think there's more."

Apparitions of Our Lady at MontichiariIn the little town of Montichiari, not far from the picturesque Lake Garda, which sit surrounded by mountains live 14,000 people. The town is situated at the edge of these clear mountains from which it drives its name, and close to the City of Brescia in the province of Lombardy, Northern Italy. It is from this podium that our Heavenly Mother requested on December 8, 1947, that H.H. Pius XII be notified of Her request that an Hour of Grace be observed every December 8th henceforth.In the Spring of 1947, whilst praying in the chapel of the local hospital in Montichiari, nurse Pierina Gilli had an unforgettable experience. Mary, the Mother of God, appeared to her in a wonderful vision and magnificent light, as the exalted Lady, dressed in mauve, very sad and with tears in Her eyes. Pierina noticed that Her heart was pierced by three swords; The first sword means: the unworthy celebration of Holy Mass and Communion unworthly received; the meaning of the second sword is: being unfaithful to, and giving up, the vocation as a priest or a religious; and the third sword means: betrayal of the Faith. Our Lady asked for Prayer, Sacrifice, and Penance. These were Her only words. Second Apparition on 13th July, 1947Our Lady appeared to Pieina in a white dress. She was adorned with three beautiful roses:white, red and yellow, which Pierina was allowed to see in place of the three swords. The white rose represented the spirit of prayer, the red one represented the spirit of sacrifice, and the yellow rose the spirit of penance and conversion. Pierina had not yet recognized the Mother of God, and she asked the apparition therefore: Please tell me, who are you?. In reply to this question She smiled and said: I am the Mother of Jesus and the Mother of all of you. Our Lord sends me to bring a new Marian Devotion to all religious orders and institutes, male and female, and to the priests of this world. I promise to protect those religious orders and institutes who will venerate me in this special way, increase their vocations, and achieve a greater striving for saintliness among the servants of God.I wish that the 13th of each month be celebrated as a Marian Day. Special prayers are to be said during the proceeding twelve days. With an expression of great joy, She continued: On this day I shall pour out vocational holiness and abundant graces on those religious orders and spiritual institutes who have honoured me especially. I wish that the 13th July be celebrated each year in honour of the Rosa Mystica (the Mystical Rose) Pierina asked whether a miracle would follow. Our Lady replied: The most evident miracle will be this: Those who have given their souls to God - the religious who, for a long time now, have become indifferent thus betraying their vocation and as a result of their offenses have brought about the punishments and persecutions which are raging against the Church at the present time - will stop to offend Our Lord. They will again lead a life according to the original spirit of their saintly founders. The seer, Pierina, interpreted the words Mystical Rose as follows: "Mary is the master teacher of the innermost, mystical life and the Mother of the mystical body of Christ; in other words: She is the Mother of the Church." This interpretation by Pierina was magnificently confirmed by Pope Paul VI in his final speech during the third meeting of the council, on 21st November, l964. Irrespective of the presence of observers from the separated Churches, he declared Mary as the Mother of the Church; finally, he let his heart speak out and said: We want that, in the future, the Most Blessed Virgin is still more honoured under this title, and called by this lovely title by the christian people. This short, yet spiritually deep declaration, by the supreme office of our Church guarantees that we cannot go wrong, but can only feel once more re-assured when we venerate Mary calling Her by the title ROSA MYSTICA. Third Apparition on 22nd October, 1947Pierina saw Our Lady again in the chapel of the hospital, in the presence of many staff members, doctors, and people from the town. This time, Our Lady requested that the desired devotion be realized, and said: I have placed myself as the mediatrix between my Divine son and mankind, especially for the soul consecrated to God. Tired of the continuous offenses, He already wanted to dispense His justice.Pierina thanked Our Lady in the name of all present. Our Lady finished Her dialogue with the words; Live out of love! Fourth Apparition on 16th November, 1947Our Lady appeared in the Basilica of Montichiari in the presence of some people. Among them were several priests. Pierina heard the words: Our Lord can no longer watch the many grievous sins against purity. He wants to send a flood of punishments. I have interceded that He may be merciful once more! Therefore, I ask for prayer and penance to atone for these sins. Pierina replied to Our Ladys request with a willing "Yes". The Blessed Virgin added: I lovingly ask the priest to express their great love and stop the people from committing those sins. Whoever will atone for those sins, will receive my blessing and graces. In reply the seers question whether we may hope for forgiveness, Our Lady said: Yes, as long as these sins are no longer committed. With these words She went away.Fifth Apparition on 22nd November, 1947Our Lady appeared once more to Pierina in the Basilica of Montichiari in the presence of several people, and demanded that the seer make four times the Sign of the Cross with her tongue on the tiles in the center of the church. Our Lady then descended onto the spot and said: I descend on this place, for many great conversions will happen here. And in a sad voice She continued: The Christians of your Italian nation belong to those who offend most my Divine Son Jesus through their sins of unchastity. Our Lord demands, therefore, PRAYER, GENEROUS SACRIFICES, AND PENANCE.Pierina asked: "What do we have to do to fulfill your demands for prayer and penance?" Our Lady replied full of tenderness: Prayer. After a short, silent pause, She explained: Penance means to accept every day all the little crosses and the duties too, in the spirit of penance. Thereupon She promised solemnly: On the 8th December, at noon, I shall appear again here in the Basilica. IT WILL BE THE HOUR OF GRACE. Pierina asked: "Please explain to me the meaning of Hour of Grace". This Hour of Grace will produce great and numerous conversions. Hardened and cold hearts resembling this marble will be touched by divine Grace, and they will become faithful to Our Lord in loyal love. This was the only time that Our Lady announced Her next appearance. All other apparitions came unannounced. Sixth Apparition on 7th December, 1947Our Blessed Virgin appeared once more at the Basilica of Montichiari Three people were present including the father confessor of the seer. Our Lady, the Mystical Rose, wore a white cloak which was held by a boy at the right-hand side, and by a girl on the left-hand side.Our Lady said: I shall show my heart tomorrow of which the people know so little. In Fatima I asked that the devotion to my heart be spread. And with an ever sweeter voice She went on: I wanted to bring my heart into Christian families in Bonate: (near Bergamo, Italy) and after a brief pause She added: Here, in Montichiari, I wish to be venerated as the ROSA MYSTICA as already indicated so often, together with the devotion to my heart which must be specially practiced in religious institutes so that they may obtain more graces through my motherly heart. Our Lady then confided a secret to Pierina with the promise that She would tell her the time for the secret to be made public. Pierina also wanted to know who the children were. Our Lady replied: Jacinta and Francisco; they will help you in your trials and suffering. They too, suffered. I wish from you the simplicity and goodness of these two children. Our Lady then spread out Her arms as a sign of Her protection, lifted Her eyes to Heaven and disappeared with the words: Praised be the Lord! Seventh Apparition on 8th December, 1947.On this great feast countless priest were present. It was only with a great deal of effort that Pierina was able to get into the Basilica. She knelt in the center of the church, just where the other apparitions had taken place. During the recitation of the Holy Rosary, Pierina called out: "O, Our Lady!"Great silence ensued! Our Lady appeared on a large white staircase, decorated with a white, red and yellow rose. She said with a smile: I am the Immaculate Conception. And descending several steps with great majesty She continued: I am Mary, full of grace, Mother of My Divine Son Jesus Christ. Descending even more, She said: Through my coming to Montichiari, I which to be known as the ROSA MYSTICA It is my wish that every year, on 8th December, at noon, the HOUR OF GRACE FOR THE WORLD be celebrated . Many divine and bodily graces will be received through this devotion. Our Lord, my Divine Son Jesus, will send His overflowing mercy if good people will pray continuously for their sinful brother. One should very soon notify the Holy Father of the Church, Pope Pius XII, that it is my wish that the HOUR OF GRACE FOR THE WORLD be made known and spread throughout the world. If anyone is unable to visit his church, yet will pray at noon at home, he will also receive graces through me. Whoever prays on these tiles and weeps tears of penance, will find a secure heavenly ladder and receive protection and grace through my motherly heart. Then Our Lady showed Pierina her heart and said: Look at this heart which loves mankind so very much, but most people only shower offenses upon it. If the good and the bad unite in prayer they will obtain mercy and peace through this heart. The Lord is still protection the good and is holding back a great punishment because of my intercession. Our Lady smiled again and went on: Soon one will recognize the greatness of this Hour of Grace. When Pierina saw that Our Lady was going to depart, she said: "Dear Lady, I thank you! Bless my homeland Italy and the whole world, but especially the Holy Father, the priest, the religious, and the sinners." Our Lady replied: I have already prepared a flood of graces for all the children who listen to my words and keep them in their hearts. She assured Pierina that she would return at a suitable time when the Secret entrusted to her, would be made public through the Ecclesiastical authority. Our Lady then said good-bye. Pierina withdrew to a convent where, hidden from the world, she served in the kitchen and where she waited in silence for the hour which, as promised, came after 19 years, on White Sunday (Sunday after Easter), 17th April, 1966, in Fontanelle, a settlement of only a few houses spread around and situated about 2-3 km outside Montichiari. Our Blessed Lady kept her promise. APPARITION AT FONTANELLEFirst Apparition: White Sunday, 17th April, 1966.The Most Blessed Virgin said:My Divine Son is total love, and he is sending me to give miraculous powers to this spring. As a sign of penance and purification kiss the top step. Steps made of stone led down from the path to the spring. Then descend a few steps and kiss the stone again. Our Lady followed the seer. Now, for a third time, kiss the bottom step and have a crucifix placed there. With Her left hand Our Lady indicated the spot. The sick and all my children must kiss the crucifix and ask my Divine Son for forgiveness before they take the water, or drink from it. Our Lady approached the spring and said: Take mud into your hands. Wash yourself with water! This is to teach the sinners that sin makes the soul dirty, yet the soul will be cleansed again through the water of grace. Thus, the sinner will once more be pleasing to God. What a clear symbol of the sacramental grace of God! Our Lady bowed down and touched the water of the spring in two places. She added the following words: The wishes expressed by my Son Jesus in 1947, are to made known to all my children. Then I gave you His messages and mine in the Basilica (Montichiari). It is my wish, and I repeat: the sick should come to this miraculous spring and many of my children should come with them. Second Apparition: 13th May, 1966.On 13th May, Our Ladys anniversary of Her apparition at Fatima, Our Lady brought great joy to Pierina when She appeared once again at the spring, in the presence of about 20 people. It was 11:40 a.m. Our Lady said amongst other things:One should make known my appearance at this spring. My Divine Son is all love. The world is walking the road to perdition. Once again I have been able to obtain mercy, and Jesus has sent me, therefore, again to Montichiari to bring you the grace of His love... It requires PRAYER, SACRIFICE AND PENANCE in order to save mankind. Our Lady, pointing to the water at Her right-hand side which She had touched on 17th April, 1966, said: It is my wish that a comfortable basin is built here, in order to immerse the sick in the water... The other part of the spring (She pointed to Her left-hand side) is to be used for drinking. Pierina wanted to know from the Blessed Virgin what to call the spring. Thereupon Our Lady replied: THE SPRING OF GRACEAnd in reply to a further question: "What is your name?", Peirina was told:ROSA MYSTICAAt these words, the Mother of God spread out Her arms, spread open Her wide cloak, and said with a smile: I have come to bring love, unity and peace to the souls of my children. I ask you, do not throw any mud on the love for your fellow-man.The seer questioned the meaning of the wide cloak. Our lady answered: This is the meaning of my love which embraces the whole of mankind. Pierina asked: "What would you like us to do here at Fontanelle? Our Lady replied: Do acts of charity for the sick who will come here. Third Apparition: The Feast of Corpus Christi, 9th June, 1966About 100 people were present at the spring on this Day of Obligation. Pierina came to the Shrine after 3 p.m. and asked all those present to recite the Holy Rosary. Suddenly, in the middle of the recitation, Pierina called out: "Look up to the sky!" This time, Our Lady appeared five to six metres above the spring over a wheat field. Those present noticed that, in the direction of the seers eyes, Our Lady seemed to touch the ears of the wheat with Her feet. Our Lady said: My Divine Son Jesus Christ has sent me here today, on the Feast of the Body of Our Lord, on the Feast of Unity and Love. Spreading out Her hand She continued: I should like very much that this wheat be transformed into the Eucharistic bread, into countless penitential communions.. Majestically, lifting Her eyes to Heaven, Our Lady went on: It is my wish that the Hosts made of this wheat, be taken to Rome, and to Fatima for the 13th October.Pierina asked: "Should all this wheat be used for it?" Our Lady replied: May noble hearts fulfill my wish. I wish that a chapel be built here with a statue facing the spring. Pierina said: "Dear Blessed Virgin, I do not understand." Our Lady showed her an image and said: The statue is to be carried here in a procession on 13th October, but prior to it, it is my wish that the people of Montichiari consecrate themselves to my heart. Montichiari is the place which my Divine Son has chosen for me to distribute His graces. Pierina saw that Our Lady was going to leave, so she asked Her to stay a little longer. Our Lady lingered, and Pierina was allowed to commend several petitions and to request Our Ladys blessing for the priests, the faithful, and the sick. Fourth Apparition: The Feast of the Transfiguration of Our Lord, 6th August, 1966Pierina came to the spring at about 2:30 p.m. About 200 people had gathered there. At 3p.m. the seer asked all to recite the Holy Rosary. During the fourth mystery she stopped, and called out: "Our Lady is here." Everyone was silent, and they all listened with emotion to the dialogue with Heaven.The Mother of God said: My Divine Son Jesus has sent me again, in order to request the WORLD LEAGUE OF PENITENTIAL COMMUNION and this is to be done on 13th October. This Day of Penitential Communion should be spread throughout the world. It is to be held first in 1966, and them to be repeated every year. Those priests and faithful who will spread this devotion, will be given the wealth of my graces. Pierina inquired again about the wheat. Our Lady instructed her: One should take this wheat to my beloved Son Pope Paul VI with the instruction that it has been blessed by Our Presence. It is the wheat of his homeland, of Brescia, of Montichiari. Tell him the wishes of my Divine Son... also those concerning Fatima. Pierina wanted to know what to do with the remaining wheat. Our Lady answered: Have small bread rolls baked of the remaining wheat. These rolls are to be distributed here at Fontanelle on certain days in memory of my coming. This is to be the sign of gratitude of my sons, who till the soil. After my ascension into Heaven I have always acted as Mediatrix between my Son Jesus and the whole of mankind. How many graces I have been able to obtain in all these centuries! How may graces were shown. How much punishment was prevented. How many dialogues did I hold with souls. How often have I visited earth to bring my messages to the people, but people continue to offend Our Lord. I have chosen this place of Montichiari because there is still the humility of poor Bethlehem among my sons who till the soil. Furthermore, this place, where so many prayers are said continuously, will be transformed into a source of rich blessings. After these revelations of Our Lady, Pierina withdrew once more into a life of peaceful retirement. In addition, the bishop ordered her to remain absolutely silent. Pierina obeyed the bishops order. The things that are forbidden are very
tempting, and very soon the message of the apparition of Our Lady spread
around the world drawing floods of pilgrims to Montichiari.

THE DREAM OF THE CHURCHES AND ROSES 2-17-05 - DREAM - I was in Milwaukee, WI. I went into a church to attend a service with some other women. In the church, they were using a very old hymnal which looked like it had the Catholic Mass in the front of the book. Inside the back cover of the book was listed 5 other churches with their phone numbers, but not their addresses. I then attended a funeral and after the funeral they gave out 3 large armfuls of red roses to 3 women including myself. I watched as two black cars went by with their rose bouquets being gracefully held outside the front passenger window. As for my own car, I wanted to take a photograph of my roses before they were taken away, so I lay them in the back bed of a pick-up truck. I took the photo and then the roses were driven away. I was going to go to the next church on the list and I found that it was on Lisbon Ave. I could have driven there in my own car, but for this journey I had to take the bus and transfer at some point to get to Lisbon Ave. I got on the bus and asked the driver if I could get a transfer to the Lisbon Ave. bus and he said, "No!". I said, "I will have to buy a ticket then." I got out my wallet out of my purse and dug out two quarters as the fee was 50 cents. I gave the two quarters to the bus driver and he handed me what felt like a thermometer wrapped in tissue paper for the ticket. I had to get off the bus then in order to take the bus that went to Lisbon Ave. Before I did that though, I had to get my coat because I was wearing a bright red Satin choir robe. (I saw myself in a mirror) As I went upstairs, I heard someone yell my name, "Hey Dee!" I knew it was someone I didn't want to see right then, so I raced up the stairs two at a time, grabbed my brown tweed coat of the closet and threw it over my arm and started racing back down the stairs in fear. I spotted the man - a tall, thin, dark-haired man with a moustache. I saw him pistol-whip my husband as I raced down the stairs and I was praying I could get to the door in time. I was picturing myself getting to the door and opening it as I woke up with my heart pounding in fear. by Dee |
