7-30-05 - DREAM
Dee,
I had a terrible dream just before I woke
up this am. I dreamt I was somewhere in the mid-west.
It seemed as if it were either in Iowa or Idaho (those are the
names I kept getting) I was at some type of re-enactor's
event...(I couldn't tell if it was a medieval re-enactment or a
Civil War re-enactment).
I could hear the sound of a plane
going overhead...it was flying towards the north. I could see
that it had blue markings on the tail. I couldn't quite make
out the number it had on it, but it started with the number, 2
All of a sudden there was a giant explosion, I saw something
that looked just like a giant canister (part of the plane?) shoot
up into the air, followed by a fireball.... then the tail
sheared off and flames burst from the middle of the plane and
then engulfed it. The plane looked as if it suddenly cracked
almost in two, and then crumbled and began falling. There was
a giant trail of black smoke and pieces of debris as it plummeted to
the earth. Then there was another explosion on impact....and
then nothing but huge blackish gray plumes of smoke from where it
had impacted. Then a voice spoke and said, "They will
think it's a mechanical difficulty, but it will really be a
terrorist attack." Then I
looked at a clock in my dream and the time was approximately
12:50pm....
I then looked at a nearby TV and saw there a
newscaster on it. It was a blonde woman. She was
speaking about the plane crash. She said something to the
effect of....."This just in..... to (it sounded liked the
station's call letters were either 'KPXJ' or 'WKPX', but
I couldn't be sure..... then there was a blue screen and the call
letters were just there for a brief moment) some breaking
news....there has been reports of a plane crash....... (then I
couldn't make out what she said about the plane crash).
Then she said something about the plane being shared by another
airline....which doesn't make any sense to me....unless one airline
company had recently sold some of their planes to another company.
After that, I woke up. I've never
dreamt about a plane crash before and the dream was so terrifying
that I started hyperventilating in the dream....
Dee, I know that there was anywhere
from 174 to over 200 people on that plane when it went down...and
none of them survived.

I need to get my map out and see how close Des Moines is to the

Most of the reenactments already happened, but August and

Cedar Rapids is just about north of Iowa City. If a
plane was going north over that area to land in the state
above it - that would fit the dream.
It would be landing in Minnesota - maybe St. Paul or
somewhere north like that.
What do you think?
**That makes sense...I'm going to print out the little
map...and try scrying with it this afternoon to see if I
might be able to pick up some information.**

Hi: I meditated on this and got nothing worthwhile. I'm obviously
not a psychic.
First I got an electrical jolt in my head and a male voice said,
"Its closer to Laramie"
then later, the voice said, "Lets take a side trip to
Arizona" and I said back, "let's not".
However, here is my dream following that:
I was in an old delapitated building in which was found stacks of
Civil War soldiers that never got buried. They were lined up in rows
in piles of bodies, in old dark blue rotten uniforms, with their
rifles with swords attached to them. Even their old blue caps were
still covering their skulls.
The men I was with wanted to move these bodies that never got buried
and given a Christian burial because we were in an area that was
forested amongst large black rocks on a hill above the flood plain
lower down. The bodies were so rotten, they broke apart when
they were touched. I decided I would not help move them personally.
Over in a corner, we found a collection of old post cards showing
ladies in long dresses and parasols who were doing 'birding'.
In an old sofa in the corner which wasn't worth saving because it
was so old, I told the men to pull up the cushions to see if their
were any old coins in it. Sure enough, someone had hidden
their coin collection along with old pens and pencils - and all that
was worth way more than face value, so I told the men that had to go
to a collector to see what it was worth.
Hoping thats' a clue to the area we were searching for.
**Interesting dream...I have the impression someone in spirit is
trying to offer you some help with this, but possibly has
their time periods out of sequence.
I'll try to examine this further later.

This is an important clue. Then you can check airline
schedules and see what plane
is scheduled to come in right after that time.
As soon as we figure out what airport is involved.

Hi: As I sent you in previous e-mail. An reenactment is
being held in Louisana in October.
Shreveport most likely improved their airport since you were
there.
We can check that closer when you identify the airline. Blue

Just narrowing down the state would help.

In regards to the state, I have

'what if'...) there's a big reenactor's event taking
place in somewhere near Shreveport...and some of the civil
war reenactor's regiments that could be gathering there from
other states are carrying banners (like the one I saw in my
dream) that list the state they are from and the regiment
number Now, like I said that's just a thought because
I went through the Shreveport airport about 20-some years
ago, and it's an extremely small airport. From what I
remember... they were flying planes out there not much
bigger than tuna cans or the size of the Wright Brothers
plane Of course, that could have
changed**

Hi Dee,
Remember the part of the dream with the tv
station's call letters?
(see below):
"I then looked at a nearby TV and saw

Well, I found this:
I also found this, but it's a radio
station....looking to see if I can find a tv station with the
same call letters:

Okay.... now I also found this, but if you notice.. it says;
"call signs reserved for Pending sale Applicants"...so
I went to look up the TV stations for Greenburg, Pa. There is
no station in that vicinity with those call letters which means they
are still open for use, or else whoever planned on buying a TV
station with the intention of using those call letters wound up
not buying the TV station. And since the broadcast I saw was
on a television station and not on a radio, that would rule out
the WKPX radio station in Florida. That only leaves KPXJ TV which is
located in Shreveport, La.

AIRLINES servicing Boise
If you look up the airplanes and look at their tails, you will be able
to tell which airline it is. Some are obviously not - as they don't
have blue on their tails and are easy to identify -
so I think you saw something more obscure and not well known.
Let me know if you can identify the airline.
**Thanks for all the info. I took a look.....I think we might be
able to rule out Big Sky, and maybe Delta
There are several different ways to identify an
aircraft. The official government mandated way is with the N
registraion number. As with everything else, the FAA has laid down
specific instructions on how to apply for, choose, or change an N
number. The rules are laid down in FAR 47.15 which I could link for
you if you'd like. Essentially it says that the N number can be no
more thsan N + 5 characters. The first character cannot be the number
0. Only the last two characters can be letters, though they don't have
to be. The letters I and O are not permitted. Either the airline or
the plane manufacturer can apply for the specific N number. If I land
in another country and they want the offical plane registration so
they can charge landing fees, thie N number is what i give them.
The other way of identifying a plane is by the ship number. This is
assigned by the airline and it's completely up to them. As a pilot,
this is the number that I'm really concerned about. The ship number
must agree on all my various pieces of predeparture paperwork, and
it's the ship number that goes into my logbook. You can find the ship
number painted on the nose gear door and sometimes at the top of the
tail. Delta has a system whereby all of it's various planes of a
particular fleet will have ship numbers starting with a particular
number. **For instance, all 767s start
with 1. All 737s start with 2 or 3.**
All MD80/90s start with 9.
The ship numbers start as three numbers, but they can go up to 4. In
the case of the MD88, they start at ship 901, 902, etc. However, there
are more than 100 MD88s so after ship 999, they went to ship 9001. The
N number for ship 901 is N901DL. For ship number 9001, they had to ask
for N number N901DE. Delta has generally received the letters
DL,DE,DN,OR DA as the last two characters of the N number. A major
change from that is the recent 767-400s which have the MH at the end
of the N numbers. I don't have a solid explanation for that, though I
am told that those are the initials of the company that supplied the
financing for those planes which are owned by Delta. The 767-400s do
conform to the ship number tradition in that the ship numbers start
with a 1 like all other Delta 767s (in the case of the -400s, they are
180X)
**Keep in mind that Delta gets planes from other airlines from
time to time from mergers and fleet purchases. They generally
retain their old N numbers but the ship numbers are made to conform.
For instance, when Delta was flying 727s, they had planes flying with
N numbers ending in WA, EA, and PA from Western, Eastern, and Pan Am.
However, all 727 ship numbers began with either a 4 or 5. Therefore,
while there was a 727 with the registration N290WA, it had a ship
number of 582.
Lastly, every plane also has a serial number as well, but that's not
something you'd generally see printed. Here is a interesting link that
allows you to input any N number you see and get some valuable
information
http://www.forpilots.com/nquery.html
This
is really weighing on me. Nobody can really understand what it's like to have a dream that is nothing
like a dream at all..... but more like a 3- dimensional
reality on another plane of existence....but I knew if anyone would be
able to understand, it would be you. This was a dream that was
not a dream. I could see the plane, I could hear it, and I could
smell the fuel as it burned.
This is going to be a terrorist attack....and authorities should be
careful not to misconstrue it as some sort of mechanical
malfunction. I didn't feel that the terrorist(s) was/were
actually on the plane. I felt that it was some sort of bomb
encased in some type of undetectable plastic that would be missed when
they do a sweep of the plane. I don't know where it would be
located, it may be under a seat, or inside of a seat...or maybe even
in the cargo hold. I could not tell if the bomb itself was on
some type of timer or not, but felt that there was a possibility that
it could be remotely detonated....possibly just shortly before landing
as it begins it's descent. If it's a remote detonation, that
might mean that the individual doing the detonation could be very near
the airport....maybe not far from the runway. I hope I am
totally wrong, but I felt almost physically ill after waking up from
the dream, and that frightens me**

OK, this is important also. 12:50 p.m.

a look at their website...I was thinking about my dream....there was
a man in a uniform with a bead and moustache doing some type of
demonstration with either a sword or a sabre (I think it was a
sabre...I remember it seeming to be lightweight and somewhat
flexible).... Also, there was a large building nearby and I
know this is going to sound kind of strange, but it had this almost
open floor plan somewhat similar to an airplane hangar, but yet nowhere
near the size of an airplane hangar...and it was not a barn,
either. I remember the walls were panelled, and there was a
black and white clock on the wall to the left, hanging
directly above an old-fashiond style wooden desk (kind of like a
desk you might've seen in the 20's or 30's) and the clock said:
12:50pm.**

more than 20 miles away...of course, I don't know how many miles
away from an airport a plane has to be before it actually begins
it's 'final approach'.**
OK, this is important also.
12:50 p.m. was the time of arrival then, or perhaps 1 p.m.
Mary
You did say the airplane was flying north - correct? If
that's so, then we should eliminate Iowa, because the reenactments
are northeast and east of the airport that could handle a large
plane.
Dee
I went to all the sites I sent you. They don't have pictures of
the planes there.
Northwest airlines plane has a red tail, so we can be sure it
isn't that one.
Dee

Here are the airlines that service Lafayette.
It can't be Northwest - because the tail is red, so its either
Delta or Continental.
Only YOU know what the tail looked like for sure.
Find the airplane. :-)
Dee
**I see we are right in sync with one
another again...I believe it is either Delta airlines or else
Continental. One other clue I remember from the original
email I had sent you was that the airlines that owned the
plane that I saw crash seemed to have planes that they shared
with another airline. Now, I was thinking what if the
planes weren't actually 'shared' but instead had been purchased
by one airline from another...for example...what if Delta had
purchased planes from Continental or vice-versa.

need to check if a 737 can land in all those airports.
Shreveport would make the most sense according to the TV
station clue.
Looking there next.
**I was thinking.... if you look at my
last email ....the nearest airport to the
Chretian Plantation where they hold reenacting events is
18 miles away... towards the north...that might fit the
final approach scenario**

of those, but I think (not for sure) the plane I saw may have been
a Continental Airlines plane:

http://www.airport-technology.com/icao-codes/
It has the airport codes listed and says this:
Index of ICAO Codes
The ICAO (International Civil Aviation
Organization) 4-letter airport indentifier codes uniquely identify
individual airports worldwide. They are used in flight plans to
indicate departure, destination and alternate airfields, as well as in
other professional aviation publications.
Usually the first two letters of ICAO codes
identify the country. In the continental USA, however, codes normally
consist of a 'K' followed by the airport's 3-letter
IATA code.
There are 2815 ICAO codes listed on the
Airport Technology Web site.

Passenger jet in flames at Toronto airport
297 PASSENGERS + CREW
NO KNOWN FATALITIES
A REAL MIRACLE
Air
France - airbus 340 , flight 358
CTV.ca News Staff
8-2-05
A passenger jet burst into flames after skidding off the runway at
Toronto's Pearson International Airport.
There is no word on any casualties and the number of passengers
was not immediately available.
But Sgt. Glyn Griffiths confirmed reports that some of those on
board had escaped the wreckage, saying an unspecified number of people
have been taken to hospital and that some have been picked up after
being found walking along the nearby highway.
Griffiths indicated the aircraft was an Air France jet that was
trying to land when it ran into trouble.
"An Air France plane landing on runway 2-4 left went off the
end of the runway the area of Convert Drive and the 401 area in
Mississauga," said Griffiths.
Griffiths couldn't say whether there were any injuries or if any
passengers had been removed from the plane, but said there's been a full
response by all emergency vehicles.
Air France has not released a statement, but a ticket agent with
the airline told Reuters that the burning plane is an A340 airbus that
was travelling from Paris to Toronto.
Live television pictures showed flames and smoke billowing from
the aircraft in a wooded area just metres from Highway 401 -- Canada's
busiest highway -- near the airport. A section of the plane's wing could
be seen jutting from the trees.
CTV Toronto's Jim Junkin reports that 200 people are thought to
have been on board.
Severe storms were hitting the area at the time of the accident.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing lightning hit the plane before it burst
into flames.
The Greater Toronto Airport Authority is expected to hold a press
conference sometime after 5 p.m. ET.

An Air France jet with 200 people aboard has
skidded off a runway while landing at Toronto's Pearson
International Airport, bursting into flames and sending thick
black smoke pouring into the air.
There is no word on the condition of the passengers and crew
members on board the A340, with the plane still burning 90 minutes
after the 3:50 p.m. crash.
The jet crashed through barriers and ended up in a small
ravine at the far west end of the airport, the fuselage tipped
down and the aircraft's tail in the air.
The airplane was trying to land in bad weather when it
skidded off the runway into a forested area just metres from one
of Toronto's busiest roads, Highway 401.
Many passengers reportedly escaped the scene and were
rescued near the highway.
One news service reported the flight to be Air France flight
number 358, a Paris-based flight which had earlier stopped in
Montreal.
"An Air France plane landing on runway 24 went off the
end of the runway in the area of Convair Drive and the 401 area in
Mississauga," Peel police Sgt. Glyn Griffiths said at about
4:30 p.m.
The incident happened as most operations at the airport were
halted because of severe thunderstorms in the area.
"There was quite a downpour. The visibility was really
bad, with lots of lightning," said John Findlay, a CBC News
journalist who was at the airport at the time of the accident.
Pearson airport has been closed an all incoming flights have
been rerouted from Toronto to Ottawa. |

Plane
burns after skidding off runway in Toronto
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
August 2, 2005, 5:27 PM EDT
TORONTO -- A passenger jetliner carrying about 200 people
erupted in flames Tuesday after skidding off a runway while
landing in a fierce thunderstorm at Toronto's Pearson
International Airport. Black smoke billowed into the air as the
wreck burned.
A Toronto radio station said some passengers were seen
climbing from the plane, and that most of the others had been
safely evacuated.
Police said the plane was an Air France A340 from Paris that
was trying to land when it ran into trouble. There was a storm
-- with lightning and strong wind gusts -- in the area at the
time.
There was no immediate word from officials on casualties.
AM 680, an all-news station, reported live from the scene that
there were two explosions on the plane. The station quoted a
police official on the nearby freeway as saying two groups of
passengers had been evacuated from the jet.
AM 680 also said some passengers could be seen climbing from the
plane and that emergency workers said most of 252 people on
board were safe.
The report could not immediately be confirmed.
A row of emergency vehicles lined up behind the wreck, and a
fire truck sprayed the flames with water.
A portion of the plane's wing could be seen jutting from the
trees as smoke and flames poured from the middle of its broken
fuselage. At one point, another huge plume of smoke emerged from
the wreckage, but it wasn't clear whether it was from an
explosion.
The flaming ruin was next to the four-lane Highway 401, Canada's
busiest highway, and some cars and trucks stopped on the roadway
after the crash.
CNN reported the flight was Air France Flight 358, which was
scheduled to arrive in Toronto at about 4 p.m. from Charles de
Gaulle International Airport near Paris.
"They made an approach in weather that was worse than what
they anticipated," John Wiley, a retired Airbus pilot in
Toronto, told CNN.
Leah Walker, a radio reporter in Toronto, said she saw a third
of the plane fall and that the rest became a fireball.
"This plane attempted to land in some very fierce weather
we had today," she said.
Thunderstorms create the possibility of wind shear, the sudden,
dangerous air currents that can dash an airplane to the ground
as it takes off or lands.
The last major jumbo jet crash in North America was on Nov. 12,
2001, when American Airlines Flight 587 lost part of its tail
and plummeted into a New York City neighborhood, killing 265
people. Safety investigators concluded that the crash was caused
by the pilot moving the rudder too aggressively.

Nobody
died in plane crash, says Canadian government
03/08/2005
- 02:06:11
A
Canadian government official said it appeared that eveyone on the
Air France A340 flight from Paris that burst into flames in
Toronto yesterday has survived.
Around 14 people are thought to have suffered minor injuries.
A jetliner carrying more than 300 skidded off a runway while
landing in a thunderstorm at Toronto’s Pearson International
Airport.
Steve Shaw, a vice president of the Greater Toronto Airport
Authority, said there were 297 passengers and 12 crew aboard the
plane. He said the jet overshot the runway by 200 yards and that
he believed the fire broke out after the passengers were
evacuated.
Air France also announced in Paris that there were no deaths in
the crash.
Officials said the plane was an Air France A340 from Paris that
was trying to land at Canada’s busiest airport just after 4pm
(8pm GMT) when it ran into trouble. There was a storm – with
lightning and strong wind gusts – in the area at the time.
A man who identified himself as a survivor, Olivier Dubos, told
CTV the lights in the plane went out a minute before the landing.
“It was scary, really, really scary.”
He said some passengers scrambled onto nearby Highway 401, where
cars stopped, picked them up and took them to the airport. Two
busloads of passengers were taken to an airport medical centre.
Another passenger, Roel Bramar, told Canadian Broadcasting
Corporation: “I saw lightning, maybe the plane had already been
hit by lightning that’s because just as we landed the lights
went off.
“I got the idea the pilot wanted to lower the plane as soon as
possible because there was such a rough storm,” he said.
A row of emergency vehicles lined up behind the wreck, and a fire
truck sprayed the flames with water. A government transportation
highway camera recorded the burning plane, and the footage was
broadcast live on television in Canada and the US.
A portion of the plane’s wing could be seen jutting from the
trees as soke and flames poured from the middle of its broken
fuselage. At one point, another huge plume of smoke emerged from
the wreckage, but it wasn’t clear whether it was from an
explosion.
The flaming ruin was next to the four-lane Highway 401, and some
cars and trucks stopped on the roadway after the crash.
Corey Marks told CNN he was at the side of the highway when he
watched the Air France plane touch down and crash.
“It was around 4 o’clock, it was getting really dark, and
all of a sudden lightning was happening. A lot of rain was coming
down,” Marks said.
“This plane ... came in on the runway, hits the runway nice.
Everything looked good, sounds good and all of a sudden we heard
the engines backing up. He went straight into the valley and
cracked in half.”
Toronto’s Lester B. Pearson International Airport handles over
28m passengers a year.
Located 17 miles west of Toronto in the town of Mississauga, it
has three terminals. Air France operates out of Terminal 3.

Runway
disaster averted
Plane
skids to halt after flaming engine blows during takeoff
By ROB
LUDLOW, Ottawa Sun
armac at Ottawa's airport lastht after a fiery blowout in the
Passengers are crediting the quick action of the flight
crew for averting possible disaster last night as an Air
Canada Airbus A320 aborted its takeoff after blowing an
engine.
Vancouver-bound Flight 139 was almost at takeoff speed
more than halfway down the runway at 6:55 p.m. when there
was a "pop" from the right engine, said
passenger Peter Simpson, who was seated on the left side
just behind the wing.
He said the aircraft, believed to be carrying about 120
passengers, seemed to lose speed and the pilot immediately
deployed the flaps and started braking, said Simpson.
"The flaps went straight up and we roared to a
stop," he said.
"The pilot immediately came on the intercom and
apologized and announced they had lost an engine on
takeoff," he said.
"There was a problem that caused them to basically
abort takeoff," airport spokeswoman Krista Kealey
confirmed last night, noting that nobody was injured.
"I really admire what the pilot did," said
Simpson. "He was wonderful. He stopped it almost on a
dime. It was expertly done. The guy (the pilot) deserves
all the credit.
"There was no B.S. He told us exactly what had
happened and what was going to happen."
SHREDDED TIRES
Simpson said the plane's tires were shredded in the
emergency stop and firefighters had fans under the
aircraft to cool the overheated wheels and brakes.
Air Canada spokeswoman Laura Cooke said the pilot
noticed an engine indication light come on during takeoff.
"As a precaution, he rejected takeoff and as a
result the aircraft came to an abrupt stop on the runway
which put, obviously, pressure on the brakes and
tires," she said.
Ottawa Fire platoon chief Dave Stevenson said they were
called to assist airport fire crews with overheated brakes
and tires but it turned out they weren't needed.
"It had the potential to be worse than it
was," he said.
Simpson said they were told there was no danger of fire
and everyone on board was "extremely calm." The
cabin crew told them there was no need to evacuate.
The flight originated in Halifax and stopped in Ottawa
to pick up passengers and change the crew before
continuing to Vancouver.
Buses took the passengers to the terminal at about 9
p.m.
Simpson said he saw skid marks about 100 metres long
with only about one-third of the runway remaining.
He said the captain told him later that the runway was
spewed with engine parts after something disintegrated in
the right engine.
Kealey said the incident occurred on the airport's main
10,000-ft. Runway 32. While it isn't clear how long it
would take to remove the disabled aircraft and engine
debris, it shouldn't affect traffic because the second
runway was still usable.
Erica Heaphy, 19, was flying for the first time with
her parents and several other family members to a wedding
anniversary in Vancouver and was sitting just behind the
wing when the engine blew.
'FREAKING OUT'
"I was freaking out before it happened but when I
saw the flames, I was really freaking out," she said.
"I just saw a bunch of orange."
Nine-year-old Sydney Rainboth said she was more bored
than scared.
"We waited on the plane for two hours. It was so
boring," she said. "I wasn't scared at
all."
Airline investigators probe runway mishap
By DEREK PUDDICOMBE, Ottawa Sun
7-25-05
Air Canada can't say yet what caused an
engine on an Airbus A320 to fail just before
takeoff from the Ottawa airport Monday night.
"At this point, I don't have any
confirmation concerning the cause of the
incident," said Air Canada spokeswoman
Laura Cooke. "It's too soon to say."
Yesterday, maintenance crews prepared the
aircraft for a replacement engine being brought
in from Montreal.
Cooke said the first priority is to repair
the aircraft and then investigate the failed
engine to isolate the cause.
"The first order of business is to
change the engine on the aircraft and then take
a closer look at the engine and potentially
involve the manufacturer to determine what, if
anything, needs to be addressed further,"
she said.
REGULAR MAINTENANCE
As part of the investigation, the pilot and
first officer will be interviewed. Cooke
couldn't say when the Airbus had last been
serviced.
"All of our aircraft are maintained and
serviced according to transport regulation and
beyond," said Cooke.
However, investigators will be looking at all
possibilities. Bird strikes and foreign objects
and debris on the runway sucked into the engine
can also cause failures, especially in the
critical takeoff phase.
Passengers credited the quick and decisive
action of the pilot in aborting the takeoff
after an engine failure light came on halfway
down the runway. The abrupt stop caused the
tires to shred and the brakes to overheat. There
were no injuries.

Blame
game begins in Toronto crash
Jon Henley
in Paris
Saturday August 6, 2005
The Guardian
The black box flight recorders from a French passenger jet
that crash landed in Canada earlier this week were on
their way to Paris for analysis yesterday as the two
countries began blaming each other for the near-disaster.
A team of 35 French and Canadian investigators have
been at a loss to explain what caused the accident, in
which all 309 passengers and crew escaped from the burning
wreckage of Air France flight 358 from Paris after it
slewed off the runway at Toronto's Pearson International
airport on Tuesday.
Experts have cited a strong tailwind and heavy rainfall
as likely factors in the crash, leading to an
aquaplaning effect in which the jet simply skidded off
the tarmac.
But France and Canada are already disagreeing over
who could be responsible.
The chairman of Air France, Jean-Cyril Spinetta, said
the Canadian airport authorities, who had just reopened
the airport after closing it for several minutes due to
the weather, "apparently considered that conditions
for landing were difficult, but possible".
However, the Canadian transport minister, Jean
Lapierre, told the Toronto Globe and Mail that "the
only person who takes the decision to land is the pilot,
and he therefore has full responsibility for that
decision".
The chief Canadian investigator, Real Levasseur, said
yesterday that the Airbus A340 had landed about halfway
down the runway.
"An aircraft like the 340 should land well
toward the back; how long exactly depends on weight,
heavy winds, there are a number of factors ... We will
try to determine whether this had a major or critical
effect," he added.
Eric Derivry of the French airline pilots' union,
SNPL, said pilots made their landing decisions
"based on the information transmitted to them by
the airport. The question is, was the information
correct in this instance - what we would need to know
would be when exactly the readings given to the pilot
were taken."
Bystander Aids Air France Jet Passengers
By REBECCA COOK, Associated Press Writer Thu
Aug 4, 2:16 PM ET
TORONTO - As terrified passengers fled the burning
Air France jet, Guy Ledez stood atop a muddy ravine,
pulling survivors from the wreckage.
He then ran on board the burning wreckage of Flight
358 to make sure no one was left behind. The 37-year-old
airport rental car manager says he didn't have time to
stop and think of danger when he witnessed the crash
during a routine Tuesday afternoon.
By Wednesday, his story had been widely circulated
across Canada, and he was hailed as a hero who risked
his life to save stunned passengers, all of whom
survived the doomed flight from Paris.
It began around 4 p.m. when he was driving along the
airport road, parallel to the descending aircraft in a
heavy storm that had prompted a "red alert" at
Pearson International Airport on the outskirts of
Toronto.
He believes lightning might have struck the aircraft.
The flight data and voice recorders — the so-called
"black boxes" — that investigators recovered
Wednesday could offer clues into the cause of the
accident.
"There was all this lightning right on it, and
then there was smoke, and then the plane just
disappeared" down a ravine, said Ledez.
Though other cars on the airport road quickly
U-turned to get away from the crash, he drove his toward
the top of the gully that was slick with rain.
"I looked down and there's just a sea of people
trying to get up," he said. "I had two babies
passed to me."
He and another bystander — whose name he never
learned — pulled survivors to safety and then went
down to help some elderly passengers up the ravine.
Not knowing whether injured survivors remained on
board, he said, the two men scrambled up the emergency
slide at the tail of the plane. Each took an aisle and
did a sweep to make sure nobody had been left behind.
All 309 passengers and crew had remarkably escaped
serious harm.
The other unknown good Samaritan jumped out. Just as
Ledez headed toward an exit, he heard an explosion from
the back of the plane, one that ultimately ripped the
aircraft into pieces.
He jumped and ran for his life. Only then did he
realize how much danger he had escaped.
"That sort of woke me up," he said.
"That's when the reality set in."
Ledez and the other man met up with the pilot and
other passengers and ran to safety by Highway 401,
Canada's busiest freeway, where they were met by
emergency officials.
Staff Sgt. Lee Weare of the nearby Peel police
department said Ledez was interviewed by investigators
immediately after the crash, and they verified his story
with the other man who searched the plane and through
photographs Ledez took with his cell phone.
The second man does not want his name made public.
"He provided that information to us and he was
one of the first civilians on the scene," Weare
said. "He did assist some passengers out of the
ravine and he did indeed board the aircraft."
Ledez's hands bore the scars from where he climbed
over a barbed-wire fence to get to the plane.
As the adrenaline wore off, his back began to ache as
he and others waited along the highway. He was taken on
the emergency buses along with the passengers to the
terminal to talk to investigators.
Later that night, Ledez lay awake in bed replaying
the crash, the explosion, and thinking about what could
have happened. He doesn't know what to think about being
called a hero.
"There was no thinking involved, just, `I gotta
go help,' so boom, I did it," he said Tuesday,
sitting at a picnic table at the airport.
He always wanted to be a police officer and even
studied law enforcement in college for a while. But the
Budget job offered a steady paycheck and he worked his
way up the company ranks over the past 10 years.
Ledez, who is single, hopes his life gets back to
normal, after all the media attention dies down.
"I'll have the same job. I'll have the same
friends," he said.

Threatening
note on US passenger plane causes scare
|
WASHINGTON, Aug. 5,
2005 (Xinhuanet) -- A threatening
note found on a US passenger plane caused a
scare Friday, prompting authorities to keep it
away from the terminal after it landed in the
southern American city of Houston, Texas.
US Homeland Security
Department officials were quoted by Local TV
channels as saying that a passenger alerted
flight attendants after finding a note which
said there was a bomb on board.
After landing, the
Boeing 737, with 136 passengers and five crew on
board, was immediately diverted to an isolated
section of Houston Hobby Airport.
All passengers were
safely evacuated at the airport and were later
questioned by security officers while a search
was being conducted on the plane with
bomb-sniffing dogs.
So far no arrest has
been made with connections to the incident.
The flight had
departed from Dallas and was destined to Corpus
Christi after making a stopover in Houston. All
the three cities are in Texas.
The incident happened
at a time when security of the public transport
system caused more concern in the United States
after the July bomb attacks on London
subways.
Southwest Airlines 737 evacuated in bomb
scare

A bomb scare prompted the evacuation
Friday of a Southwest Airlines flight in
Houston, Texas.
(CNN) -- A threat
against a Southwest Airlines flight prompted the
evacuation of the 141 people onboard at Hobby
Airport in Houston, Texas, an airline
spokeswoman said.
But it turned out to be a
"non-event," she said, and authorities
later allowed the flight to continue on to its
final destination, Corpus Christi, Texas.
The Boeing 737 was carrying 136 passengers
and five crew members from Dallas to Houston,
when the threat was received, said Southwest
Airlines spokeswoman Edna Ruano. She would not
elaborate on its nature.
An FBI official and a Transportation Safety
Administration spokeswoman said a passenger
found a note on the plane suggesting a bomb
threat.
Flight 21 landed at 12:30 p.m. (1:30 p.m. ET)
and was immediately evacuated while still on the
tarmac. Bags were re-screened and a bomb squad
with dogs was sent to sweep the plane before
authorities determined there was no danger.

Father, son escape injury in
plane crash
BY CASEY
MOFFITT
STAFF WRITER
8-5-05
A
father and his son escaped serious injury in a
plane crash after taking off from Palwaukee
Municipal Airport Friday afternoon.
The Wheeling Fire Department responded to a
distress call from the pilot of a twin-engine
Cessna 421 around 12:20 p.m. Friday, said Keith
MacIsaac, Wheeling fire chief. The pilot reported
trouble in the left engine of the aircraft less
than 10 minutes after taking off from the
airport’s main runway. The pilot reported oil
leaking from the engine and was granted clearance
to make an emergency landing.
MacIsaac said the pilot was unable to land the
plane on his return to the airport, overshooting
the runway. As the pilot attempted to circle the
airport to make another pass, the plane descended
quickly into an industrial area on Chaddick Road
in Wheeling, where it crashed. Officials said they
did not know who was piloting the aircraft at
takeoff or at the time of the crash.
“They were very lucky,” MacIsaac said of
the father and his son. “They were conscious and
alert when we arrived, and there was no
extrication from the airplane.”
MacIsaac said the two were in shock, and
speaking incoherently about the accident. Both
were taken to Lutheran General Hospital in Park
Ridge, although the father was not admitted, said
Katie Boysen, hospital spokeswoman. Boysen said
the son, a teenager, was in good condition Friday
afternoon.
“They’re doing fine,” Boysen said.
“These things are so scary, but they’re both
doing well.”
Boysen said the father did not want his or his
son’s name released. MacIsaac declined to
identify the pair by name, age or hometown. He
also said he did not know the flight’s
destination.
As it crashed, the plane hit the roof and wall
of Nedco Electronics, at 505 Chaddick Drive.
MacIsaac said no one in the building was injured,
but the building was evacuated and all working
inside were given the afternoon off by management.
“A gas line in the building was damaged,”
MacIsaac said. “We turned off the gas as a
precaution.”
MacIsaac said he believed the building can be
repaired, but the aircraft was totaled in the
crash.
Dennis Rouleau, Palwaukee Airport manager, said
he believed the plane was based at Palwaukee; the
Federal Aviation Administration had been called to
investigate the accident.
There was no fire caused by the crash, and a
small fuel leak was cleaned up by fire officials,
MacIsaac said. John Popadowski, Wheeling police
chief, said he could not recall a previous
airplane crash in the industrial park, located
about a half-mile from the end of the airport’s
main runway.Operations continued at Palwaukee
after the crash.

Passenger plane goes down off Sicilian coast
Tunisair flight was carrying 39 passengers and
crew; at least 19 killed
ROME - A Tunisian
passenger plane crash-landed into the
Mediterranean Sea Saturday off the Sicilian coast
on a flight from Bari, Italy, to Djerba, killing
19 people, a Palermo prosecutor said. Twenty
people survived, he said.
"Unfortunately the
toll has gone up," Palermo Prosecutor Piero
Grasso told The Associated Press by telephone.
"There are 19 dead, and 20 survivors,"
with apparently all 39 aboard accounted for, he
said after heading to Palermo's port, where the
survivors were being taken off rescue boats.
SKY TG24 TV said some
were seen clinging to the plane's wings. The
rescued people were in shock, fire official
Giovanni Sacconi said.
SKY TG24 TV also said
divers spotted six people in the wreckage of the
ATR-72 jet, but it was unknown whether they were
alive.
The plane left Bari,
Italy, on its way to Djerba, Tunisia. It was
operated by Tuninter, an affiliate of Tunisair,
the national airline of Tunisia. Tuninter said it
had no immediate word on victims.
"The plane had engine problems and was
trying to (emergency) land in Palermo and had to
land in the sea," Nicoletta Tommessile, a
spokeswoman for Italy's air safety agency, ENAV,
told the AP.
The plane contacted the
Rome airport tower officials at 3:24 p.m. to
report engine trouble and say it would have to
land at Palermo's airport. Sixteen minutes later,
the plane's crew told tower officials: "We're
ditching in the sea," Tommessile said.
The ATR-72 is a
twin-propeller plane built in France. It has a
two-person crew and seats up to 74 passengers. Its
maiden flight was in 1988.

ATHENS (Aug. 14, 2005) - A
Cypriot airliner carrying 121 people crashed north
of Athens on Sunday, killing everyone on board,
Greece's fire chief said. Reports said the pilots
were unconscious when the plane went down,
possibly because of a lack of oxygen in the cabin
due to decompression.
"The fire is still

p.m. near the coastal town of Grammatiko, about 25
miles north of the Greek capital, leaving flaming
debris and luggage strewn across a ravine and
surrounding hills.
The Boeing 737 was due to
fly onto Prague, Czech Republic after stopping in
Athens.
The cause of the crash, and
any possibility of terrorism, was not immediately
clear.
After losing contact with
Athens' control tower, the Greek air force
scrambled two F-16 fighter jets. The airliner
reportedly did not respond to radio calls.
"There is wreckage
everywhere. I am here, things here are very
difficult, they are indescribable,"
Grammatikos Mayor George Papageorgiou said.
"I am looking at back
tail. The fuselage has been destroyed. It fell
into a chasm and there are pieces. All the
residents are here trying to help."
The head of state committee
for investigating airline safety, Akrivos Tsolakis,
speculated that there may have been a problem with
the cabin pressure.
"He told me the pilots were
unconscious ... he said: 'My cousin I
bid you farewell, we are all
frozen'."

Witnesses said they saw the
plane being followed by the Greek air force jets
when in went down in a gorge.
Greek radio and television
stations reported that the air force pilots saw no
movement in the cockpit of the plane before the
crash and it was unclear if the two pilots were in
their seats.
"The plane crashed
around 400 meters (437 yards) from homes in the
area," said Miltiadis Merkouris, a spokesman
for the Grammatikos municipality.
The plane did not respond
to radio calls, the reports said.
Helios Airways, a privately
owned airline founded in 1999, is Cyprus' first
independent airline. It operates a fleet of Boeing
737 jets between Cyprus and London; Athens; Sofia,
Bulgaria; Dublin, Ireland; and Strasbourg, France.

Dee and all, the plane could have
depressurized because of some saboutage in the air
before it of course blew up when it hit the
ground. From the stories I've been reading,
depressurizing in the air is pretty rare. It
happened to a golf pro in 1999 and the plane
flew on auto-pilot for four hours before crashing.
And one other time that I can't recall the details
right now. Greece has a group
of radicals that have the same name as the Basque
ones in Spain -- N- 17 or something like that --
the number on both is "17". Several of
either the Greek ones or the Basque ones were
caught about three years ago and had been active
since the 1970s. The Basque ones have set
bombs a couple of times this year so they're still
very active -- they were suspected of the train
bombing in Spain on 3-11 for awhile.
The F16 pilots that scrambled to look in the
windows of the Greek plane before it crashed said
that there were two people in the
cockpit trying to fly the plane themselves
apparently (or terrorists taking over the plane)
and that the captain's seat was empty. The
copilot was slumped over his controls unconscious.
The short guy that knocked on our door in my dream
-- was dressed in black leather or rubber suit and
had a black rubber mask over his face and a
breathing device over his mouth - so I couldn't
see his face -- plus he was shy acting and looking
down at the ground. I had to crouch way down
to get my ear down by his mouth. Like I
said, I was in my nightgown and bare feet just
like real life in the dream like I was out of
body, not dreaming. So I don't know if that
kid that came to my door was one of the kids that
died on the plane and was telling me about it OR
if he was the terrorist and was proudly telling me
what he did. He seemed macho even though he
was shy acting looking down at his feet like that.

"There apparently was
a lack of oxygen which is usually the case when
the cabin is depressurized," he said.
Unconfirmed media reports
also said one of the pilots may have fallen ill or
unconscious.
Sotiris Voutas, the first
cousin of a passenger on the plane, said he
received a text message from his relative on his
mobile phone minutes before the crash.
"He told me the pilots
were unconscious ... he said: 'My cousin I bid you
farewell, we are all frozen'."
Greece crash
plane may already have been flying tomb
By Brian Williams Sun
Aug 14, 6:38 PM ET
ATHENS (Reuters) - A Cypriot airliner that
crashed in Greece may already have been a flying
tomb when it plunged to earth with some of the 121
people aboard already either dead or unconscious,
early indications suggest.
Sunday's crash, the worst air disaster in
Greece and the worst involving a Cypriot airline,
perplexed aviation experts astounded by what
appeared to have been a catastrophic failure of
cabin pressure and or oxygen supply at 35,000 feet
-- nearly 10 kilometers (six miles) up, higher
than
There was also mystery over the last minutes of
the Helios Airlines Boeing 737 flight which was
declared "renegade" when it entered
Greek air space and failed to make radio contact,
causing two F-16 air force jets to scramble to
investigate.
All 115 passengers and six crew died, most
burned beyond visual recognition, when the plane,
with neither pilot in control, spiraled down in a
death dive into a mountainous area about 40 km
north of Athens.
The plane was on a flight from Larnaca in
Cyprus to Prague with a stop in Athens. An airline
spokeswoman and Greek authorities denied some
media reports that many of those on board were
children.
Airport officials in Cyprus said flight HCY522
left Larnaca at 9 a.m. (0700 GMT) on Sunday and
lost contact at 10:30 a.m.
Greek Defense Ministry officials said 90
minutes elapsed between the alert first being
raised at 10:30 a.m. and the plane crashing at
12:03 p.m.
Greek government spokesman Theodore
Roussopoulos said the F-16 pilots sent to
investigate reported that with the pilots out of
action there may have been a last-gasp effort by
others on the plane to bring it back under
control.
"The situation was characterized renegade,
meaning the aircraft was not under the control of
the pilots," Roussopoulos told reporters,
explaining how the crisis unfolded after the plane
failed to make radio contact.
"At a later stage, the F-16s saw two
individuals in the cockpit seemingly trying to
regain control of the airplane,"
Roussoupoulos said.
"The F-16s also saw oxygen masks down when
they got close to the aircraft. The aircraft was
making continuous right-hand turns to show it had
lost radio contact."
A passenger on the doomed plane said in an SMS
text to his cousin in Athens: "The pilot has
turned blue. Cousin farewell, we're
freezing."
CHARRED BODIES
Reuters photographer Yannis Behrakis reported
from the crash site that dozens of bodies were
still strapped into their seats, some with the
remnants of oxygen masks over their faces.
"Two charred bodies were still hugging
each other," he said.
The plane broke into many pieces on impact,
with the two engines 500 meters away from each
other, the cockpit a further 200 metros away and
the tail broken off a further distance away.
Greece's defense ministry said it suspected the
plane's oxygen supply or pressurization system may
have malfunctioned.
Loss of cabin pressure was identified as the
probable cause of two similar but smaller-scale
air crashes in recent years.
Pro-golfer Payne Stewart and five others were
killed when their Learjet aircraft crashed in the
United States in 1999 after flying for more than
four hours without radio contact.
In 2000 a plane crashed in Australia after
flying for more than an hour from 25,000 feet up
with no sign of life on board.
Experts told Reuters it was extremely rare for
a plane to lose oxygen, and that emergency systems
should have kicked in.
"The pilots should have had their masks
on," a retired British pilot who did not wish
to be named told Reuters. "Why they didn't
put them on is the big mystery."
"A loss of pressurization in the cabin is
in itself a rare event but to go as far as it
incapacitates the pilot is hugely rare," the
retired pilot said.
Greek media speculated a toxic gas from
possible faulty air-conditioning could have
incapacitated the two pilots before they knew they
were in danger.
One of the F-16 pilots said he could not see
the captain in the cockpit and his co-pilot
appeared to be slumped in his seat.
A spokesman for the European Aviation Safety
Agency, Daniel Holtgen, based in Cologne, Germany,
said the cause of the crash was likely to be a
combination of factors:
"It is highly unlikely that the loss of
cabin pressure alone would cause such an incident.
There would have to be other contributing
factors." |

Plane crashes in Venezuela, 160 dead
CTV.ca News Staff
8-16-05
A West Caribbean Airways jet crashed Tuesday in
a remote area of western Venezuela, killing all
160 people aboard.
France's civil aviation authority said all the
passengers were French citizens of the French
Caribbean island of Martinique.
The plane, a McDonnell Douglas MD-82, was
headed from Panama to Martinique when it went down
in a mountainous area near Venezuela's border with
Colombia.
The pilot requested permission to make an
emergency landing just after 3 a.m., saying there
was trouble with both engines, said Col. Francisco
Paz, president of the National Civil Aviation
Institute.
About 10 minutes later, airport authorities
lost radio contact with the plane in the area of
Machiques, more than 640 kilometres from Caracas,
in the western border state of Zulia.
"The plane went out of control and
crashed," said Paz. "There are no
survivors."
Shortly after losing radio contact, residents
in the area reported hearing an explosion, Paz
said.
Officials in Martinique said the vacationers
who chartered the flight to Panama included civil
servants and their families. There were also
several couples.
French President Jacques Chirac offered
condolences to families of victims after learning
of the "appalling catastrophe."
Chirac sent France's minister for overseas
territories to Martinique, and opened a crisis
center at the Foreign Ministry to maintain
contacts with Venezuelan authorities and victims'
families.
In a statement from Colombia, West Caribbean
Airways said 152 passengers, including an infant,
and eight Colombian crew members were aboard the
plane.
Venezuelan officials confirmed there were 160
aboard, including eight crew members.
The plane crash comes just two days after a
Cypriot airliner hit a hill north of Athens,
Greece, killing all 121 aboard.
West Caribbean Airways is based in the
Colombian city of Medellin. It has been in service
since 1998.
Since spring, it had operated a charter between
Panama and the French Caribbean territories of
Martinique and Guadeloupe, said French Transport
Minister Dominique Perben.
In March, eight people died when a twin-engine
plane operated by the airline crashed during
takeoff from the Colombian island of Old
Providence.
Three
bodies remain missing, including the plane's
German pilot, fire officials said. Cypriot
authorities identified him as Marten Hans Jurgen,
50, from Berlin.
Carbon Monoxide Ruled Out in Greek Crash
By ELENA BECATOROS, Associated

ATHENS, Greece (AP) - Carbon monoxide did not
knock out some of the passengers and crew of a
Cypriot airliner before it crashed in the Greek
mountains, coroners said Friday, deepening the
mystery as to what caused the disaster that
killed all 121 people on board.
Fillipos Koutsaftis, chief coroner of Athens,
said tests were carried out on the remains of
the co-pilot, three female flight attendants, an
infant and an adult who were on the flight that
went down Sunday about 25 miles north of the
Greek capital.
More tests were being conducted to determine
what could have rendered crew and passengers
aboard the Helios Airways Flight ZU522 from
Larnaca, Cyprus, unconscious during the flight.
The plane flew on autopilot before crashing.
Koutsaftis said a few more days were needed
to run the toxicological tests.
"This was the fastest test and the most
secure,'' he said after meeting Justice Minister
Anastasios Papaligouras. "We are still
doing tests for other gases, poisons, drugs and
alcohol.''
Earlier tests showed that at least 26 people
on the flight were still alive when it crashed.
There has been speculation that an electrical
fire or some other cause could have flooded the
cabin with carbon monoxide or another gas.
"I don't know and can't rule out'' that
something else could have been responsible,
Koutsaftis said.
Investigators also have been examining
whether a sudden decompression sucked oxygen out
of the cabin and cockpit and rendered those on
board unconscious.
Greece's deputy fire chief, Andreas Kois,
said that missing parts of a voice recorder were
found near the burned wreckage. Investigators
already have sent one of the "black boxes''
- the flight data recorder - to France for
analysis.
A team of six coroners was conducting
toxicology tests on some of the 118 bodies
recovered from the crash site. Three bodies are
missing.
The coroners said they expected test results
to indicate whether those on board the plane had
inhaled carbon monoxide.
Autopsy results on 26 bodies identified so
far have shown that some passengers and at least
four crew members - including the co-pilot -
were alive, but not necessarily conscious, when
the plane went down.
The chief investigator, Akrivos Tsolakis,
told The Associated Press on Thursday that an
air traffic control diagram showed the plane
flew on automatic pilot to Athens' international
airport. But it was flying at 34,000 feet and
turned south into a holding pattern over the
island of Kea after passing over the airport.
More than an hour later, it changed course again
and later crashed north of Athens.
"What troubles us is that the automatic
pilot was functioning up to a certain point, and
then it was disengaged, possibly by human
action,'' Tsolakis said.
The automatic pilot had been programmed to
fly the plane to Athens airport, and it was
unclear how or why it was disengaged, Tsolakis
said.
"Possibly, there was human intervention.
I'm not speaking with certainty, because I don't
have all the evidence yet,'' Tsolakis stressed.
The strange circumstances of the flight - and
disturbing scenes witnessed by Greek air force
F-16 fighter pilots scrambled to intercept the
plane - have baffled authorities.
On Wednesday, state-run and private media,
quoting anonymous defense ministry officials,
said the two fighter pilots saw someone in the
cockpit take control of the plane, which was
flying in a gradually descending holding pattern
apparently on autopilot.
That person, probably a man who experts say
must have had flight training, then banked the
plane away from Athens, lowering it to 2,000
feet and then climbing back up to 7,000 feet
before the plane apparently ran out of fuel and
crashed.
Separately, a Helios Airways flight with 177
passengers aboard made an unplanned landing at
London's Stansted Airport on Friday after the
pilot reported a mechanical problem, said Jane
Johnston, a spokeswoman for Britain's National
Air Traffic Service. The Boeing 737 landed
without incident.
The airline announced in Nicosia, Cyprus,
Friday that it would have its two Boeing 737s
undergo a full technical inspection.
Colombian Jet Crashes
in Venezuela, Killing 160
Aug. 16, 2005 (Bloomberg) -- A
Colombian airliner carrying French tourists
crashed early this morning in a mountainous
region in western Venezuela, killing all 160
people on board.
The Medellin, Colombia-based West
Caribbean Airways SA jet was en route to the
French Caribbean island of Martinique from
Panama when it came down in the Sierra de
Perija on the Venezuelan-Colombian border,
according to Venezuela's civil aviation
agency. The plane, a charter flight, was
carrying 152 passengers, all French
nationals, and eight crew members, a French
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said.
``There is a large number of bodies at
the crash site,'' National Guard Major
Javier Perez, who is overseeing the rescue
operations, said in an interview with
Globovision from the area near Machiques,
Venezuela where the plane went down. ``We
are trying to recover all the bodies.''
The crash is the second this year for
West Caribbean, according to Colombia's
civil aviation authority. On March 26, a
West Caribbean airplane crashed en route to
San Andres island from Providencia island,
killing seven passengers and two crew
members.
Airline Debt
Col. Carlos Eduardo Montealegre, a
spokesman for the Colombian civil aviation
agency, said the airline has ``financial
troubles'' and was under observation by the
government. John Ospina, spokesman for West
Caribbean, denied the government's claims in
a telephone interview from Medellin.
``We don't have financial difficulties,''
he said. ``What we have are outstanding
credits.'' Among money owed to the airline
is 2.88 billion pesos ($1.25 million) owed
by the national army, Ospina said.
The airline will continue to operate,
company President Jorge Perez said in an
interview with W Radio.
The doomed jetliner was also inspected
last night outside Medellin, Montealegre
said.
Venezuela's Interior and Justice Minister
Jesse Chacon said at a televised press
conference that one of the jet's black
boxes, or flight recorders, had been
recovered, and would be analyzed. All the
crew members were Colombians.
Investigators recovered at least 56
bodies, who were airlifted to a makeshift
morgue in the western oil city of Maracaibo.
Chirac
French President Jacques Chirac called
today's crash a ``shocking catastrophe'' and
said in a statement he sent Overseas
Territories Minister Francois Baroin to
Venezuela.
The aircraft radioed ground authorities
at 3:07 a.m. local time (3:07 a.m. in New
York), saying it had problems with one of
its engines, Francisco Paz, who heads
Venezuela's civil aviation agency, told
Union Radio. Ten minutes later the plane
reported problems with a second engine,
Chacon said. The plane probably crashed
between 3:30 a.m. and 3:45 a.m., he said.
The aircraft went down near Machiques, a
town about 150 kilometers (90 miles)
southwest of Maracaibo, Chacon said on
national television. The company identified
the aircraft as a Boeing Co. MD-82.
Explosion
Residents in the area said they heard a
large explosion at 5 a.m., Chacon said. One
witness told local radio the plane fell in a
ball of fire, according to Agence France
Presse.
West Caribbean was founded in December
1998, according to the airline's Web site.
The carrier flies two MD-81s, and one MD-82,
as well as smaller craft.
Boeing discontinued the MD-80 series in
December 1999. Boeing acquired the model,
which entered service in 1980, with its
purchase of McDonnell Douglas Corp. in 1997.
AMR Corp.'s American Airlines operates
the largest fleet of MD-80s consisting of
275 of the planes. The West Caribbean plane
wasn't purchased directly from Boeing,
according to Boeing's Web site.
The West Caribbean accident comes two
days after a Boeing 737 flown by a Cypriot
airliner crashed, killing all 121 passengers
and crew aboard in Greece's worst air
disaster.
Venezuela's last commercial airline crash
occurred in January 2001, when a DC-3
belonging to Rutaca Airlines went down,
killing 24 people.

Craft lost altitude as
pilot was flying toward Vail Pass
By Julie Poppen,
Rocky Mountain News
August 20, 2005
A pilot and his
passenger were injured Friday morning after crash
landing on Interstate 70 on Vail Pass, narrowly
missing two tanker trucks and causing a
motorcyclist to duck for cover.
Pilot Brooks Johnson, 42, was attempting to fly
over the pass in his Piper Cherokee when he lost
altitude, passenger John Clark, 52, said from Vail
Valley Medical Center Friday afternoon.
We had plenty of altitude going into the canyon
headed towards that pass, but it took us by
surprise," Clark said. "We lost altitude
pretty quick. The canyon was too narrow to turn
around."
The single-engine plane, which left Rock
Springs, Wyo., earlier Friday, touched down twice
on the highway before the left wing struck a
median, hurtling the plane about 50 feet up an
embankment beside the highway.
Johnson was listed in serious condition with a
fractured back, a cut forehead and collapsed lung,
according to family and friends. He underwent
surgery Friday, Clark said.
"He's a little rougher than I am,"
Clark said. "But he's doing OK."
Clark was put in a brace for an injury to his
back. He also wrenched his knee and said something
smacked him in his jaw, but he was expected to be
released later Friday.
It was Clark's first trip to Vail. The two men
live in Green River, Wyo.
"I'm gonna buy a lottery ticket,"
Clark said. "Let me tell you about lucky. I
could be a Vail citizen by (tonight)."
"Everything's fixable," said Clark's
wife, Christine. "Comparatively speaking,
they're real fortunate. We're so blessed and
thankful."
Clark, a yard master for Union Pacific
Railroad, said Johnson was not attempting an
emergency landing - at first.
"He wasn't setting the plane down,"
Clark said. "The highway was coming up to
meet us."
Johnson did his best to navigate the aircraft
with its stripped landing gear into one of the few
areas without trees, Clark said.
"We went right in on the belly,"
Clark said.
Johnson, an experienced pilot, was unconscious
after the crash. But Clark had the wherewithal to
ask witnesses to shut down the plane's master
switch and turn the key so that sparks wouldn't
start a fire.
Nobody on the ground was injured, but a
motorcyclist's heart likely skipped a beat when he
was forced to duck as the airplane approached him
dead-on.
He was driving westbound when the airplane came
at him from over a hill, Vail spokeswoman Suzanne
Silverthorn said.
Clark said investigators told him that a couple
tanker trucks had preceded the motorcycle.
Numerous motorists and a bicyclist reported the
crash, about 3.5 miles west of the top of the pass
in Eagle County, on their cell phones just before
10 a.m.
The two men were en route to Leadville to
refuel, authorities said. They planned to visit
Johnson's brother at the Suzuki Cyclefest at
Copper Mountain to test drive motorcycles.
Prior to heading to Leadville, Johnson was
planning to fly over the event to photograph his
brother, Silverthorn said.
The experience won't deter Clark from flying
with Johnson again as soon as they both recover.
Clark said Johnson was instrument-rated and had
flown for years in all types of conditions.
"I have so much faith in Brooks as a
pilot," he said. "I was never extremely
scared."
The Federal Aviation Administration and the
National Transportation Safety Board are
investigating the crash.
I-70 traffic backed up in the area of the crash
for hours Friday as one westbound lane remained
closed.
The slowdown followed last Saturday and
Sunday's rockslides on the busy interstate near
Idaho Springs, which created monumental traffic
headaches.

Peru jet crashes in jungle, at least 40 dead
By Robin Emmott Tue Aug 23,
7:16 PM ET
LIMA, Peru (Reuters) - A Peruvian passenger plane crashed in
heavy storms in Peru's northeastern jungle on Tuesday, killing at
least 40 people, police said.
A spokesman for the state-run airline TANS said the Boeing
737-200 plane, which had a capacity of 120 passengers, made an
emergency landing without its landing gear in the jungle town of
Pucallpa, 490 miles northeast of Lima.
It was not immediately clear if the plane was taking off or
landing. It was due to fly to the northern jungle city of Iquitos.
"There are 40 cadavers that rescue teams are pulling from
the wreckage. There could be more deaths, we assume some 60 people
in total since we've rescued 20 injured persons," a police
officer in Pucallpa told RPP radio.
Peru's Transport Minister, Jose Ortiz, said 93 passengers were on
board the plane. TANS declined to comment.
"It's really a Dantesque scene," said police officer
Arioso Obregon, referring to the apparent destruction the aircraft.
One witness, Tomas Ruiz, told RPP radio the plane was
"totally destroyed."
"The plane made an emergency landing but without its landing
gear," said firefighter Ilda Pineda. "The weather was
really terrible, there was a fierce storm at the time," said a
police officer in Pucallpa.
TANS, founded in the 1960s by the Peruvian air force to help
serve remote jungle communities, started up as a commercial airline
in 1998. It has around 30 percent of the local market.

Plane crash kills at least 40
A government-run Peruvian airline
plane crashed in the jungle, killing at least 40 people.
Rescue operations were to continue today.
From Herald
Wire Services
LIMA - A Peruvian plane carrying 100 people crashed
during a heavy rainstorm Tuesday while attempting to make an
emergency landing on a highway in the middle of the jungle.
More than half of those aboard survived, according to local
media reports.
An air force official at the scene of the crash told
local Radioprogramas that 40 bodies had been pulled from the
wreckage of TANS Perú Flight 204 and that the number of
dead could rise.
But at least 57 people survived and were being treated in
three local hospitals for broken bones and minor burns,
Peruvian media reported.
TANS spokesman Jorge Beleván said that the company would
send two planes today with family members of the victims,
medical supplies and doctors to assist the survivors.
'The pilots' skills allowed them to make an emergency
landing, during which the plane crashed. But thanks to this,
at least some people survived,'' he said.
The Boeing 737-200, which was carrying 93 passengers and
seven crew members, crashed while trying to make an
emergency landing on a jungle highway as it approached the
Pucallpa airport at 2:30 p.m. local time, TANS stated in a
fax.
RADIOED THE TOWER
The pilot contacted the airport tower saying he could not
land because of strong winds and a heavy downpour, an
airport receptionist told The Associated Press by phone. She
added that the plane circled until it tried to make the
emergency landing. Beleván later said that crosswinds had
caused the plane to go down.
Radio reports said the crash happened about six miles
from the airport, 305 miles northeast of the capital, Lima.
Edwin Vásquez, president of the Ucayali region, where
Pucallpa is located, told Radioprogramas that the pilot was
trying to land in a marsh to soften the impact when the
plane crashed. The craft split in two, he said.
César Arroyo, a provincial prosecutor, told
Radioprogramas that 37 to 40 bodies had been pulled from the
wreckage before the authorities called off the rescue
operation until this morning.
''There are still many more bodies to recover, but now
they have stopped operations because of darkness and the
muddy terrain,'' he said. ``Tomorrow at 7 a.m., we will
finish the recovery work.''
A passenger identifying himself as William Zea told CPN
radio by telephone that the plane was traveling from Lima to
Pucallpa -- and from there on to the northern jungle city of
Iquitos -- when it ``suffered some malfunction and we went
down.''
''We are standing next to the cabin and we can see the
body and it appears that it is a flight attendant in her
uniform. We can also see a person who appears to be a
female,'' a correspondent for Radioprogramas said. ``There
are bodies of children. Many bodies.''
Tomas Ruíz, another passenger, told Radioprogramas: ``It
seems it was a matter of the weather. Ten minutes before we
were to land in Pucallpa, the plane began to shake a lot.''
FOUNDED BY AIR FORCE
TANS is a military-operated company, founded in the 1960s
by the Peruvian air force to help serve remote jungle
communities.
It started up as a commercial airline in 1998.
According to the Aviation Safety Network, the crash is
the sixth for TANS since 1992. The most recent was on Jan.
9, 2003, when a TANS Fokker 29-1000 crashed in northern
Peru, killing all 46 aboard.

Plane Crash Victims Found In Lake
Erie
Oct 5, 2005 11:15 pm
US/Eastern
Butler County (KDKA)
The wreckage and remains of Lindsey
Myers, Kevin Jesteadt, and Jimmy Regal have been located
and their families drove to Buffalo. KDKA's Mary Robb
Jackson reports that those who directed the search effort
spoke with the press today.
Those same families had done everything possible to find
their loved ones including walking the shores of Lake
Erie, looking for any sign. They even hired private divers
to help, but the final result fulfilled their worst fears.
“We'll work with family members and the medical
examiners office to help with identification,” said New
York State Police commander Michael Mann.
The plan was meant to be a dream of a marriage proposal.
Kevin Jesteadt, 24, of Butler County was supposed to ask
Lindsey Myers, 23, of Venango County to marry him as they
flew over Niagara Falls in a small plane.
The plane took off from an airport in Dunkirk, New York
the evening of Aug. 26.
At the controls Kevin's best friend Jimmy Regal, a
commercial pilot.
But as the trio returned, their plane disappeared over
Lake Erie. There was no distress signal.
“They need to have a proper burial - they need to be
home,” said Helen Regal, the pilot’s aunt.
Divers had been out there for almost a month.
Yesterday, because of the divers’ efforts, the plane
wreckage was finally located near the center of the lake
in pieces.
One victim was still inside and the two others were
outside nearby. It took both art and science with divers
feeling their way along the bottom.
“They went out and searched an area and found it based
on the best information,” said U.S. Coast Guard
Lieutenant Chris Sweeny.
The investigation into what cause the plane to crash is in
the hands of the National Transportation Safety Board.

Plane Carrying Viruses Crashes in
Canada

|
WINNIPEG, Manitoba
A cargo plane carrying small amounts of flu
virus crashed on railway tracks near Winnipeg's city center
Thursday, killing the pilot but missing buildings and vehicles,
authorities said.
The research samples of frozen influenza and herpes viruses were
destroyed in the crash and ensuing fire along with other freight,
Federal Express spokeswoman Karen Cooper said.
She said the Cessna 208 was owned by Morningstar Air Express of
Edmonton and was under contract to FedEx.
Morningstar spokesman Don Boettcher didn't immediately identify
the woman piloting the aircraft. "She'd been with us for about
five years," he said, without providing further details.
The plane took off from the Winnipeg airport en route to Thunder
Bay, Ontario, at about 5:45 a.m. and traveled about four miles
southeast of the airport before it requested a return,
Transportation Safety Board investigator David Ross said.
"The aircraft then descended below radar coverage and
contact was lost with the aircraft," Ross said.
"It has crashed on railway tracks and does not appear to
have collided with any other objects, houses or cars," police
Sgt. Shelly Glover said.
Winnipeg police spokeswoman Carolyn Kwiatek said there was no
damage to the surrounding area from the fire. The crash did tie up
traffic on nearby streets during the morning rush, but no accidents
or injuries resulted.
In its cargo were six vials of virus samples being sent to
Thunder Bay for research, Cooper said.
Although the samples were labeled dangerous goods, they weren't
considered hazardous at the crash site since all the cargo was
destroyed in the blaze, Cooper said.
Police Sgt. Kelly Dennison said weather may have been a factor.
Reports suggested light snow and mist in the area, temperatures near
the freezing mark, moderate winds and about four miles of
visibility.
Ross said the plane probably wasn't carrying a flight data
recorder.

EST (16:55 GMT) Iran
TEHRAN, Iran (CNN)
-- An Iranian military transport plane has crashed
near Tehran after hitting a 10-story apartment
building, killing at least 110 people -- most of
them aboard the plane -- Iranian officials and
state-run media reported.
The air force C-130 -- carrying more than 90
people -- crashed at about 2 p.m. (1030 GMT) on
Tuesday, sparking fires in the apartment building
that houses military personnel and their families.
Everyone on board the plane was killed,
including 47 journalists who planned to witness
the Iranian navy's maneuvers in the Persian Gulf,
officials said.
A health ministry spokesman said 110 bodies had
been taken to hospitals near the crash site in the
town of Towid, south of the capital.
"Both the main and reserve fuel tanks were
full which is why the plane went up in flames as
soon as it hit the building," Ahmad Ziaie,
the head of Iran's fire brigade told state
television, Reuters reported.
The building that was hit and others around it
were immediately evacuated after the crash.
An Interior Ministry spokesman told Reuters
that several people had been killed on the ground.
The spokesman added that many of them had been in
their cars at the time of the crash.
The plane was heading for the port city of
Bandar Abbas in southern Iran when the pilot
reported technical difficulties and was returning
to base, according to Abdul Rahimi with Iran's
civil aviation authority.
It crashed near Tehran's Mehrabad International
Airport, which handles domestic, international and
military flights.
The plane struck the building as it went down,
Iran's Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA)
reported. A short time later, an explosion went
off on the fourth floor of the building, which had
filled with gas.
Video from the scene showed emergency personnel
rushing towards the building which had smoke and
flames pouring from its windows.
"I can see flames licking out of the
windows of the fourth floor of the building,"
said a Reuters journalist at the scene.
Shahram Alamdari, a Red Crescent official, told
Reuters by telephone from the scene: "It is
awful down here. I am suffocating."
In Iran's last major military air disaster, an
Iranian Ilyushin-76 troop carrier crashed in the
southeast of the country on February 19, 2003,
killing all 276 Revolutionary Guard soldiers and
crew aboard.

Jetliner slides off runway at Midway Airport
By Jason George
Tribune staff reporter
Published December 8, 2005, 9:11
PM CST
A Southwest Airlines Boeing 737
attempting to land at Midway Airport in heavy
snow Thursday evening slid off a runway, broke
through a barrier fence and stopped in the
middle of the street at 55th Street and Central
Avenue.
At least two vehicles were damaged, and one was
pinned under part of the plane, Chicago Fire
Department spokesman Larry Langford said.
Five people were taken to Advocate Christ
Medical Center in Oak Lawn in an unknown
condition, said Deborah Song, a spokeswoman.
The plane, Southwest Flight 1248 from Baltimore,
was landing about 7 p.m, according to fire and
police reports. There were 98 passengers aboard
and a crew of five, said Wendy Abrams, a
spokeswoman with the Chicago Department of
Aviation, which controls the airport.
They were evacuated, loaded onto buses and taken
to an airport terminal, she added.
Fernando Ruiz, 44, who lives in the 5400 block
of South Central Avenue, was in front of his
house shoveling snow with his wife when the
plane pushed through the fence separating the
airport from the street.
Ruiz only saw the plane after it came to rest in
the middle of Central Avenue. Ruiz said he was
surprised that he didn't hear the plane crashing
through.
"The first thing I heard was the
sirens," Ruiz said. "Usually for
something like this, you would hear a big
sound."
From his house less than half a block from the
plane, he initially saw fire trucks descend on
the scene, spraying the aircraft down with
water, but it didn't appear to him that the
plane was on fire.
Initially, there was a traffic jam on Central,
but as of 8:30 p.m. there were only police and
fire personnel milling around.
"There's a metal fence right around the
corner and plane went right through the
fence," Ruiz said. "It's not
chain-link; more like a sheet metal fence."
"It stopped right on Central," Ruiz
said. "You would figure if the plane had
brake problems it would have been long gone.
With all this snow, it was probably slippery
enough that he was already braking but he
skidded."
The airport was closed at 8:16 p.m. because of
the weather and the accident.

Nigeria plane crash kills 107, mostly
children

The
Associated Press
SUNDAY, DECEMBER 11,
2005
|
PORT
HARCOURT, Nigeria Accident
investigators sifted through the wreckage
of a Nigerian airliner on Sunday,
searching for the cause of a crash that
killed 107, including dozens of
schoolchildren heading home for the
holidays.
The crash on Saturday of the Sosoliso
Airlines McDonnell Douglas DC-9, carrying
110 passengers and crew from the capital,
Abuja, to the southern oil-industry center
of Port Harcourt, was the second major air
accident in seven weeks in Africa's
most-populous nation.
Rescue workers pulled seven survivors from
the aircraft on Saturday, but state
television reported Sunday that four later
died.
The twisted, charred wreckage lay Sunday
in two principal parts several hundred
meters apart, with investigators picking
through the pieces.
A top Catholic cleric in Abuja, John
Onaiyekan, said 71 schoolchildren from
that city's Ignatius Loyola Jesuit College
died in the crash. Four others got off the
plane when it made a scheduled stopover in
another city, he said.
The Paris-based aid agency Médecins Sans
Frontières said two of its employees were
among the dead: a French national and an
American citizen.
A top aviation ministry official, Tommy
Oyelade, said investigators had recovered
the plane's flight-data recorders - the
so-called black boxes - but that the cause
of the accident had not yet been
determined.
Sam Adurogboye, spokesman for the National
Civil Aviation Authority, said the weather
had been stormy around the airport at the
time of the crash, and witnesses said they
saw lightning as the plane approached the
runway. He said seven crew members were on
board.
President Olusegun Obasanjo canceled a
visit to Portugal scheduled to have begun
on Sunday and said he would meet urgently
with the country's airline operators over
"much-needed reforms in Nigeria's
aviation industry," a presidential
spokeswoman, Remi Oyo, said in a
statement.
"The president is particularly
saddened by the untimely and abrupt
termination of the lives of many young
schoolchildren," Oyo said.
On Oct. 22, an Abuja-bound Bellview
Airlines Boeing 737-200 crashed after
taking off from Lagos, Nigeria's biggest
city, killing 117 people on board the
plane. The cause remains unknown.
Families search for Nigeria plane
crash victims
12-11-05
Grieving
relatives clutching photographs have
crowded Port Harcourt hospital
mortuaries, searching for loved ones
among the 104 people killed in a plane
crash, nearly half of them children.
The Sosoliso
Airlines flight on its way from the
Nigerian capital in Abuja, to the
southern oil city crashed on Saturday
during a storm and burst into flames at
the airport.
Two of seven
survivors died on Sunday, raising the
death toll to 104.
Aviation
officials originally said the plane was
carrying 110 people but on Sunday
revised the figure to 102 passengers and
seven crew.
More than 50 of
the people on board were schoolchildren
from a Catholic college in Abuja on
their way home for the Christmas break,
the Abuja archbishop's secretary says.
Also among the
victims were two expatriates working for
the relief organisation Medecins Sans
Frontieres (MSF), the head of mission
for MSF France in Nigeria says.
At the University
of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital,
about 20 badly burnt bodies were laid
out on the dirt floor of the mortuary, a
room with no refrigeration or
air-conditioning.
"All we can
do now is bury our dead and mourn. There
is so much suffering here," one man
said among hundreds of relatives who
were weeping and wailing at the
mortuary.
Many were holding
photographs of their dead relatives.
Some say the names of their relatives
were on the manifest released by the
airline, but they could not find their
bodies in any of the three hospitals
where corpses had been deposited.
At first hospital
authorities said they could not release
any bodies until full identification had
been carried out, but the governor of
Rivers state, where Port Harcourt is
located, ordered they should be
released.
Flight recorders found
Aviation
officials say the flight data and voice
recorders have been recovered.
A team of
investigators from the United States has
begun work to determine the cause of the
crash.
"During our
investigations, we saw the black box and
flight recorder. We have handed over the
crash site to investigators," Tomi
Oyelade, permanent secretary in the
Aviation Ministry, told reporters in
Port Harcourt.
Officials say
rescue work has been concluded and the
Aviation Minister will comment on the
crash during the week.
Port Harcourt
airport remains closed to all flights.

12-19-05 - MIAMI -, FLORIDA
All 20 Aboard Killed as Plane Crashes Off
Miami Beach
By JESSICA GRESKO, AP
MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (Dec. 20.2005
- Investigators hoped to haul up the fuselage of a
sunken seaplane to find why it broke apart and
plunged into the ocean just off Miami Beach,
killing all 20 people on board, including three
infants.
Within minutes of the crash
Monday, rescue workers, boaters and surfers
converged on the oil-slicked crash scene. Nineteen
bodies were recovered and divers suspended efforts
to find the final body late Monday.
Two crew and 18 passengers
were on the flight to Bimini in the Bahamas. Many
of the victims were returning home to the 7-mile
long island after Christmas shopping jaunts.
Maurice D'Giovianni, 42,
one of the throngs of surfers at the beach, said
he heard a distinct "Boom!" before a
wing fell off and the plane, black plumes of flame
tailing it, tumbled into the water.
"It exploded in the
air, and one of the wings flew out of there,"
D'Giovianni said. "The other part of the
plane was on fire and it just went straight down,
like a mosquito."
The Chalk's Ocean Airways
plane - a twin-engine Grumman G-73T Turbine
Mallard built in 1947 - was operating under visual
flight rules, FAA spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen
said.
Coast Guard spokesman Dana
Warr also saw the crash from an island in a
channel known as Government Cut that cruise ships
and freighters take past South Beach into the Port
of Miami.
"Everything looked
normal, I saw the aircraft take off like it does
every other time. I didn't think anything of it
when I saw the black smoke from the pier, until I
then heard the Coast Guard alarms go off," he
said.
Relatives of some of the
victims went to Miami Beach, weeping about their
losses. Garred Gadaon, 34 said his sister-in-law
Jackey Lavarity, 38, and her 13-year-old daughter,
were on the plane.
"The Christmas holiday
is a joyful holiday. We had a tragic death today
with many of our family members and our friends.
It doesn't seem real," said Gadaon.
The Federal Aviation
Administration and the National Transportation
Safety Board sent teams to investigate.
"We'll be looking at everything in this
investigation. Nothing is off the table,"
said Mark Rosenker, acting NTSB chairman.
The initial investigation
will focus on locating the plane's cockpit voice
recorder and on examining maintenance logs and
operations records, Rosenker said.
Much of the wreckage,
including the main fuselage, will likely be raised
from the Atlantic Ocean on Tuesday. Rosenker urged
witnesses who made amateur video or still
photographs of the crash to come forward.
The skies were cloudy at
the time of the crash, but there was no rain or
lightning in the area. FBI officials said there
was no immediate indication of terrorism or
criminal intent.
Chalk's is too small to
fall under the federal guidelines that require
passengers and their luggage be inspected by
Transportation Security Administration screeners,
said Dale Karlen, federal security director at
Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.
Coast Guard Capt. James
Maes said the main part of the plane's fuselage
was submerged in about 35 feet of water that is
subject to strong tidal currents because of the
narrow ship channel.
Ship traffic in and out of
the port will be suspended indefinitely, Maes
added. That includes three large cruise ships that
had been scheduled to depart Monday afternoon.
The plane involved in
Monday's crash - registered to Seaplane Adventures
LLC in Greenwich, Conn. - previously had few major
reported incidents and no passengers or crew were
injured in any of them, according to the FAA.
On Sept. 21, 2002, the
plane skidded on a runway in Fort Lauderdale after
its landing gear failed as the plane touched down.
In Fort Lauderdale on April 17, 1984, the landing
gear failed because of a stress failure. On Feb.
10, 1984, in West Palm Beach, the elevator trim
tab that controls pitch failed, causing
"extreme shaking and vibration."
The company's aircraft had
engines that were converted from older
piston-driven models to Pratt & Whitney
turboprops, upgrades in avionics and improvements
to the plane's interior, the company said.
Chalk's general manager
Roger Nair said it was the airline's first
accident with a passenger fatality. The NTSB
database indicates no fatal accidents involving
passengers for Chalk's since 1982, when the
database began, although two pilots died after
their seaplane crashed near Key West on March 18,
1994.
Chalk's Ocean Airways was
founded in 1919 and its aircraft have been
featured in TV shows like "Miami Vice."
Its floating planes take off in view of the port
and waterfront multimillion-dollar homes.
Founded by Arthur
"Pappy" Chalk, the small airline thrived
during Prohibition, taking bootleggers, their
customers and Customs agents to Bimini.
Chalk's was bought by
Florida businessman Jim Confalone in mid-July
1999, was rechristened as Chalk's Ocean Airways
and was in the midst of an "extensive
refurbishment" of its airline fleet,
according to the company's web site.
